Ion 1950's Futuristic Flying Wing - Pt13: Tissue over Laminating Film - By O.F.W. (Peter) Fisher

The Ion Mk 20 is a great looking flying wing from 1957, designed by O.F.W. Fisher and English designer and owner of Performance Kits. He was often known as Peter Fisher. The Ion has a 33" wingspan and was originally a free flight model powered by a Frog 80 diesel engine, however in this build it will be converted to 2 channel RC. The original design had elevons, used to give some reflex to the wing and they could be used to adjust the trim. In this build series these elevons will be servor controlled.

Looking fantastic, and the models not bad either. 😁 All credit to you I have tried and tried to work with Doculam but I just can't get it to shrink. Even on a flat open surface. Any how, Ion is looking great.

Hahahahaha, thanks Terry, appreciated as always, pleased you like it. With regards shrinking Doculam, what temperature are you using, I normally shrink it using a high heat, 150degC and above up to 200

Nice. I don't remember if you mentioned how is PU varnish holding on against regular glow fuel...

I wouldn't trust it with Glow fuel, but certainly good for diesel and petrol 😀

Hi Mark, fantastic scheme, love it👍. Nicely done. In your previous vid (the windscreen) you weren’t keen on the score line. I’m just wondering if you used a red sharpie on the windscreen seam if it would blend in with the covering 🧐

Great videos, thanks. I have struggled with getting laminating film (doculam) looking great on open structure frames. And then I flipped this scenario around and covered FIRST with tissue and ezedope, then laminated over top of that with really satisfying results. The dope finish was easier to achieve, and the laminate grabs on to the tissue as smooth as can be. Thoughts?

Thanks for the comment, pleased you enjoyed the video, sorry to hear you are having problems with laminating film. I have heard of others putting the film on top of the tissue, but never tried myself. I only use the film for strength, and prefer the vintage look of the tissue on top. But if it works for you and you are happy with the finish thats all that counts, sounds like a good job 👍

Excellent Video…. Did you put laminate on the fuse before you put the tissue on or can you just put the tissue straight on solid fuselages?

Thanks very much for the comment, it's appreciated. I put the tissue straight onto the balsa fuselage, but I water proofed it first with the polyurethane so that when I wet the tissue it would not soak the balsa.

If polyurethane varnish is not glow fuel resistant, what would you use for a glow engine?

I don't put glow engines in my vintage models, only diesel and petrol, which is where I use this technique, but there are products on the market you could use as a final covering, you will just need to do a bit of research.
