The main character is just a mother cis woman. But this character was made by an actor. In real life he is homossexual. I think people saying "drag queen" just get confused by the terms... This character he made is in honour of his mom.

fun fact: after Paulo Gustavo's death, a statue was made of this character Dona Hermínia which is based on his real mom, of course. It's located at the park of the interview scene in the movie, Campo de São Bento, in his hometown Niterói, where also a street was named after him. There is also a cultural incentive law named in his honor, such was the impact of this movie series on brazillian box offices.

First of all, I'd like to thank you very much for doing these reacts, they're already part of my week, thank you very much for valuing the films that Brazilians themselves often don't value. This movie is very important to us Brazilians, we have a huge affection for what it represents and especially for the lead actor. Paulo Gustavo was part of my life and that of all of Brazil. His death is still a sensitive topic, and he is highly respected and referenced in current comedy. Unfortunately he left behind two young children, a husband, and the whole of Brazil devastated. But we always try to remember him in the best way. And there's a phrase of his, which I can say is the essence of the Brazilian and is worth a lifetime: "Laughter is an act of resistance."

This film is about Paulo Gustavo's mother, the theater play that gave rise to the film made Paulo Gustavo famous. The play was released on May 4, 2006, and Paulo Gustavo died from Covid on May 4, 2021. Paulo completed a cycle making history in theater, TV and cinema, created three films about his mother and was an LGBTQIAP+ icon. Today his mother continues to be a TV star who participates in one of the biggest TV shows on Sundays. Paulo's death is felt to this day and leaves the whole of Brazil with tears in its eyes.

In fact, many Latina mothers are like this, but it's because they care about us a lot and love us SO MUCH! Dona Hermínia is inspired by the mother of actor Paulo Gustavo, who is JUST like the character. My mother is also similar to Hermínia. The fact is that without her father present, she became intense and independent. I love that she's kind in her own way, and no one needs to understand other than her kids! I was waiting for this! This is one my favorite movies of all time! I know this film is not a masterpiece of drama, but it has immense sentimental value for Brazilians. Dona Herminia's behavior may seem exaggerated, but she has a little bit of every Brazilian mother and I miss going to the cinema with my mother to watch Paulo Gustavo. With each film he managed to not only entertain but bring up important topics to the masses. I highly recommend watching the other films, which are as good as the first one. He really revolutionized the way of consuming Brazilian films and encouraged people to go to the cinema to watch national films, which unfortunately is not common. And yes, Latina moms, and especially Brazilian moms are intense hahahaha

The actor who records Mrs. Herminia is called Paulo Gustavo, he was a great comedian and actor for Brazil. He died of covid in 2020 and it was a great loss for Brazil, he was married and had 2 children with his husband, so much so that in a part of minha mãe é uma peça 3º movie is a play his husband appears and his two children too. And I recommend you to watch the 2 sequels of the movie because they are very good too!

A palavra " Peça " ( my mother is Peça ) tem um significado de que é uma mãe complicada ou diferente das outras .
@Tanglw7 ай бұрын
I think some context could brighten up the movie here: As the post-credit scenes show, the story is based on Paulo Gustavo's (the main actor/writer) real life mother. Telling his mom's stories is what kickstarted his comedian career, and playing her on stages is what elevated him to national fame (it's titled "The Movie" because it used to be a stage play before). So, the character of Juliano is kind of a self-insert for himself in the story. The sad thing is: Paulo Gustavo tragically died in 2020 of Covid, in possibly the height of his success, leaving a husband and two children behind. His mom, Dea Lucia, made famous by these movies, is now a celebrity on television, being a fixed cast member on the #1 sunday television variety show, kind of making his prophecy come true.

My mother didn't usually watch movies or TV shows. She worked a lot. But whenever Paulo Gustavo showed on tv she was there to watch him. This film was once shown on TV and we managed to watch it together. She saw in that movie the portrait of a Brazilian mother and I saw in him the gay son who had the chance to have a wonderful mother. We laugh a lot. My mother passed away from Covid in the same year as Paulo Gustavo. I miss everything he did and I'm grateful that he gave me an extra moment with my mother. Every time I see him I remember her.
@nadacomnadadentro56427 ай бұрын
In the movie he is interpreting his own mother's mannerisms to portray a very realistic brazilian mom. He was a gay man, did not do drag I believe, just made female roles in the movies. He sadly passed away leaving two children and a husband. He was so significant that even the most homophobic people felt his loss and a law was passed to dedicate funds to culture under his name. His death was a significant part of the turn in the 2022 elections when the left was on presidency again after 4 years of heavily fascist and anti-LGBT, anti-mask, anti-vaccines (a new to the country in contemporary history) far right government, the ex-president who lost said election was the one at the time he died and denied buying supplies to counter Covid and when bought was severely overpriced + he discouraged the use of face masks. Everyone felt the weight of his death, T.V exhibited all his movies and raised concerns about the Covid situation in the country.

Where they live (in front of the ocean) is one of the most expensive places here, there are a few older apartments, but they are also really expensive...
@Vinigalves077 ай бұрын
I'm sure it has been said already, but: The actor portraying the mother is Paulo Gustavo, and the movie is based on a semi biographical play he wrote about his very loud mouth mother and their family dynamic, Juliano been based on himself. He was one of biggest names in comedy here in Brazil, but sadly passed away due to Covid right at the beginning of the pandemic. Although he's gone, he's work was vast and it's still incredibly relevant even today. The movie has two sequels who dive further into the family as it grows, and its a love letter to all mothers and their complicated relationships with their children.
@NatyCassal7 ай бұрын
You should see the sequels, Minha Mãe É Uma Peça 2 and 3, the both are as good as the first one. The third one was one of the last movies many people saw on theaters before the pandemic started back in 2020, and sadly in may 2021 Paulo Gustavo died of Covid.

Very mainstream (but a quite well-done one, unlike most comedies here) movie that pushed Paulo Gustavo to stardom here. It was this movie box office success that made him really well-known nationally in Brazil. He made part 2 in 2016 and a part 3 in 2019, before dying from COVID in 2021, leaving his husband and two baby children he just had in 2019. Very sad because he left us in his greatest moment. This movie was very successful because of how relatable it feels in its portrayal of the Brazilian Mom. Character is naturally exaggerated for comedy but the essence of the situations is very similar. Not great cinema like the other movies you were considering but it’s very good entertainment for the average mainstream Brazilian comedy. The sequels have the same vibe of this movie. Part 2 is her dealing with her kids not needing her anymore and leaving home as they grow up. Part 3 is her dealing with her kids starting their own families as the daughter gets pregnant and the son marries another man.

Paulo Gustavo was a miracle, an once in a lifetime, to be openly gay in mid 1990 on Brazil, as himself said was a challenge and yet, he was able to make the whole country smile with the triology of Minha Mãe é uma Peça and others works he participated into, like his appearence on the series "Vai que Cola" or his own series "220 Volts". Ever acting role he received, he turned into gold, no matter how big or minor his role was. On Mother's day, this movie always plays on the tv channels, cuz there's no better representation of a Brazillian mother and he did it so well and he kept doing it, his biggest dream was to be a father and he was able to put his twins on the last movie as well. When he died of covid on 2021 it was the same night of the finale of Brazillan Big Brother which was on his popularity peak on the 20th and 21st edition, they had to tell the final 3 players of what happened before the results cuz the whole country was devastated, Paulo had made multiple appearences inside the house as well. Almost 3 years had passed and we all miss him, his laugh, his jokes, everything and he had so much more to show us. Paulo Gustavo é eterno and he teached us that laugh is resistence against all odds. Viva Paulo Gustavo!!

It's acttualy kind of a love letter to Paulo gustavo's mom (she was the inspiration for the movie and it's acttualy that level of crazy, paulo is the actor portraying the mom but in real life he is the gay son -the hole movie is inspired by his real family and things that heppend to them) There are 2 more movies and in the credits of some there are real videos of Paulo and his family. Unfortunally he died because of covid and left a husband and children behind, it was one of the greatest losses of the pandemic and now his mom is doing some aperances in TV, making comedy like her son. It is a bit exagerated for most, but defenetly there are some people like her in Brazil, including the real mothere that inspired the movie.
