@@hellbunniez3 This isn't an English comprehension test. It is an IQ test. That is why the English headmaster couldn't answer the questions. They were beyond his IQ. Students would need an IQ of about 110 to 120 to get all the questions right on this test. This test really has nothing to do with English reading. They should have taken the test in Korean if they want to test for IQ. Or if it was really about English then the questions should be in a logical format that someone with a 90 IQ could complete them all.

I used to work at a 5-star resort reception, and we had Korean and Japanese staffs too because we have plenty of Korean and Japanese tourists coming in. Every end of the month, our Front Office Manager made us do a write-up about something we experienced that month; it could be about anything in regards to work. It could be a long or short write-up (depends on us) and it was an outlet for us to rant about work so we loved doing it. However, our only Korean staff, Ms. Ji Hye (but she prefers being called Kelly), absolutely hated it because in her own words she "don't know how to write essay". She can speak English fairly fluently, but in terms of writing something on her own accord from zero (without a prompt like how conversations do), she blanks out completely. She told us that at school, they weren't taught creative and critical thinking when it comes to the English Language. And by watching this video, I kinda get what she meant by that. It all feels very technical and robotic to me.

Yup, as a native English speaker and intelligent person (academically at least), the way most of these questions were worded did not seem natural at all. At times it seemed like some overly verbose scientific research paper written in the 1950s. I hope it doesn't sound harsh but whoever writes these exams for Koreans students does not seem that in touch with either modern English language, or how to test for intelligence.

Unless you’re really want to pursuit that “formal” english career, then I can’t think of anything that these might help you in everyday life or interact with English speaking folks. I’ve read through the first couple of questions and man, it’s indeed long and sooooo wordy. All these questions could be rephrased at a shorter and easier to understand passage.

its probably the trained lawyer bit. Natives are terrible at reading due to the brain shortcutting information based on expectations and automatically filters irrelevant or "filler" words. Man, I'm an Indian Law Aspirant and English remains my third language. We have this national entrance exam for law colleges after 12th Grade, and trust me when I say, all of this seems like child's play when they throw terms like 'loquacious', 'convivial' or "erinaceous' into the mix. Most native speakers don't use excessively articulate and niche language, but here it seems we as non-native speakers must understand the nuance of every word Shakespeare invents to be considered bloody "literate". For that, I have Lord Macaulay to thank, perhaps Korea would have another historical person in a similar role for the intense suffering their students have to persevere through.

@@goulash75 You are correct that learning English is not the goal of the Korean English education. The English test is not really about testing students' fluency in English; it's designed to assess their ability to understand complex ideas, abstract concepts, and similar skills. Although it appears to be an English test, it actually evaluates students' logical thinking. The answers to the questions become clear through logical reasoning, and all answers can be derived from the given texts without adding subjective opinions. Most of the time, even people fluent in English get the answers wrong because they add their personal opinions.

This hits home to me as someone who grew up in East Asia. I remember how studying was all I ever did/cared about, so I paid zero attention to developing my self-esteem, hobbies and other skills. Everything was about getting into a top university. And when I finally did it, the next milestone was to graduate with decent grades. When I graduated and finally got to decide what I wanted to do, I felt like a 3-year-old child thrown in at the deep end. Although I excelled at school, many of my less academic peers who spent time developing their hobbies, confidence and interpersonal skills are seeing much better success in the conventional sense of the term. I have to spend a lot more time making up for what I neglected in childhood.

I beg to differ. I found out midway through schooling time, studying is more fun and faster to understand in a group setting. Not only sitting in a group, but to converse and explain the questions and answers together and find better ways to answer (usually for physics and math) among each other. It quickly boosted my confidence and my social skills as we chatter this "global crisis" of ours. Hobbies on the other hand, only occurred after studying, unfortunately with much stress my group of friends usually find ourselves doing not so healthy hobbies I'm afraid, but yeah if you're stuck with the books and books only most of your days, socializing will be hard to establish in later life

Your story resonates deeply. Growing up in a high-pressure academic culture can be so consuming, leaving little room for personal growth outside of grades and achievement. It’s as if life becomes a series of boxes to check: top university, good grades, stable career-and only once we reach those, do we start to realize how much we missed along the way. I can imagine how disorienting it must feel to suddenly be thrust into a world that values skills and qualities we didn’t get a chance to nurture. Confidence, hobbies, self-esteem, resilience-these were set aside in the pursuit of academic excellence, and yet they’re the things that often lead to sustainable success and happiness. It’s like building a beautiful house without a foundation, and once the structure is up, realizing there’s so much more to construct underneath. But here’s something I truly admire about your story: despite all of that, you’re still here, actively working to rebuild those parts of yourself. It’s incredibly courageous, and it shows a level of self-awareness and determination that not everyone has. Yes, some people may seem to have a head start in certain areas, but your story isn’t over. You’re learning and growing on your terms now, and that’s incredibly powerful. I believe the qualities you’re cultivating now will make your path unique and meaningful. In the long run, success isn’t defined by how quickly we reach each milestone but by how authentically we pursue our journey. You’re doing exactly that. Keep going-you’re building a life with true depth and resilience.

As a guy who did really bad in SAT way back when and got rejected in most universities I applied to, I understand how big this is for Korean students. But I would echo what Mr. Smith said at the end - failure in the exam does not define who you are. I hope more students will take on this mindset and when they get to the marketplace and take on decision making positions, they will bring about the change in Korea's view of CSAT as well as how the test is put together - for the betterment of the next generation of exam takers and Korea's education system in general. Seriously, those CSAT problems are outrageous - it feels more like an entrance test for those seeking management consulting jobs in McKinsey or Deloitte. It is just not fair for most of those kids.

In 2009, I achieved a perfect score on the English section of Korea’s national college entrance exam, the Suneung. However, when I began studying in the United States, it quickly became clear that this achievement did little to prepare me for real-life communication or academic discourse. Despite my high score, I had to essentially relearn English for meaningful use, underscoring how Suneung preparation fosters exam-specific skills but lacks practical application. Many defend the Suneung as a measure of students’ ability to engage with academic texts, yet my experience suggests otherwise. The exam’s emphasis on rote memorization leaves students ill-equipped for dynamic intellectual challenges, offering no foundation for critical thinking or authentic comprehension. As the headmaster insightfully remarked, the Suneung largely functions as a filter for medical aspirants, with limited relevance for other academic fields. Its rigid focus fails to capture or nurture talents in areas requiring creativity and analytical depth, such as the natural sciences, engineering, and the humanities. This narrow approach risks stifling intellectual diversity, sidelining gifted individuals whose strengths lie beyond the exam’s narrow scope. A more holistic, adaptable educational model-one that prioritizes critical thinking and real-world skills-would better cultivate Korea’s brightest minds, empowering them to thrive across a full spectrum of fields.

Fun how the difficulty level is quite similar to (at least the harder parts of) the advanced English final exams in Finnish upper secondary school. A big difference being that we have different question types including a short essay, but the scale is pretty different when its more like thousands of exams per test, not hundreds of thousands. Any native speaker is shocked when they see those tests, just like here. One of my prouder moments was scoring I think 294/300 or something to that scale, without taking any English courses other than those that I needed to be eligible to take it. Wasn't rusty, I got all of the questions shown correct :-) except the one where the correct answer was hidden under the subtitle.

I mean that’s the point right? Highly advanced tests to sort students into top universities? As far as I remember (as a fresh high school graduate, mind you), most other exams aren’t that difficult for the average student. If you’re talking about education as a whole, then yes there’s a million different ways it can be improved. The higher education culture there is also relevant, but I’d argue the SAT (maybe not KSAT, but they are really similar from what I can see) fulfill its job well.

yup, it’s crazy and has only been getting worse due to the growing popularity of ielts. people use advanced expressions yet aren’t even remotely fluent. listening to it feels bizzare. because wdym you are out here randomly throwing in ielts 8.5 vocab while simultaneously not being able to produce a single coherent sentence without stuttering or participate in an actual fast-paced conversation? i’d rather people use simpler words and mess up the grammar, at least their language will sound lively and REAL compared to that rehearsed type of speech pattern which they clearly acquired after attending a 3 month 2mil vnd course. because most of the ‘graduates’ have no idea what they are talking about and cannot apply those skills beyond a standardized test structure. not a native english speaker or a teacher, just someone who spent 2 years in vietnam and frequented the local english clubs. although i tried to avoid speaking english in other settings and would otherwise nói tiếng việt anywhere i could

@@peculliar ideally that's what should happen in language learning. it's just that their goal of teaching eng in school is different. they don't teach english so the students are fluent in it, they're only teaching english so the students can extract information from eng papers during uni. it doesn't matter if they can't barely form a sentence during convo with eng speakers, which is a pretty common occurrence in schools throughout asia tbh. After all what's the chance of them actually having to speak with native english speakers in the first place lol

We actually have a similarly difficult test in Czechia, but you only take it when applying to university, and it consists of fewer questions. I think there are 20, and it’s part of a bigger test, so you have 20 questions about math, 20 about general knowledge, and 20 in English. The English ones are more specialized, though - the text is from scientific papers to test if you understand advanced English. You often take another test specialized in the field you want to study.

Untangling the convoluted questions tests cognitive acumen rather than rote learning. It was interesting to see how the wording of the questions reinforced messages about being a successful Korean citizen. It is the same patriotic-propaganda approach used in the American public education system. Having recently watched the English "schoolboys" train with the Korean military made this stand out to me. As a card-carrying bookworm, I have to say that some of these questions were appalling. Structurally, they aren't that different to questions I've seen on exams in the US, but they're obviously written and vetted by people who lack full mastery over the English language. The small grammatical mistakes all over the test give this away, with the exam using phrases like "early career teachers," rather than "teachers early in their careers," "running race," rather than just "race," and "better significant predictions" rather than "significantly better predictions." The result is that many of the sample passages and the questions themselves are fundamentally unclear. The question that asks, "which sentence is unrelated the overall flow," is a good example. They want the student to identify which sentence is extraneous to the argument that the passage is presenting. Unfortunately, the exam writers weren't sure how to ask that, and the language they settled on is so imprecise that even native English speakers will struggle to understand what's being asked. It's bad enough that I'd say that getting those questions right is essentially a matter of luck. If the results of this one exam are really so consequential that they affect the course of a person's life forever afterward, that is disgraceful.

You guys should do the American SAT and ACT. We take the SAT at the end of Sophomore year and the ACT around senior year. The scores on them don’t really count towards anything but colleges like when you take them as it’s a good indicator of your level. Most universities actually have a minimum SAT score that you should keep an eye on. Earning 2600 is the perfect score and schools will be clamoring for you to go them. Unfortunately very few students ever get it as maybe one every year gets it. The students that score high are usually science and English program students. Getting AP or gifted is no guarantee of doing well on those tests. The SAT requires a lot of vocabulary skills as every year a new guide is published with new words you need to memorize and understand.

@ThatCasualGuy23 it's actually 2400 if you take the entire exam (800 per each subject - Reading, Math, and Writing), but by technicality most colleges and universities typically only look at the combined score between Reading and Math. So you do have a valid argument there too.
