iOS. Used to use Android on the Pixel, but prefer how it syncs with my MacBook and Apple TV. I have heard of Android users installing GrapheneOS to “degoogle” and I respect that. At the end of the day, use what works best with your workflow and priorities. I see people on degoogling/privacy subreddits and here on KZbin that say “you’re not doing it right if you aren’t using Arch Linux, Arkenfox and a pixel running GrapheneOS!” This strict attitude and dismissal of those who are stepping into the world of privacy/degoogling is hurtful and anti-productive towards the actual goal of privacy.

What I can't give up on Android: • Browser engines (Firefox + uBlock origin) • File managers that really deserve their name. You can't even show hidden files or name an SMB share under iOS. • Syncthing • Keyboard (soo bad on iOS) • 3rd party app stores • possibility to install self developed apps easily • KDE Connect (limited on iOS) • Auto clickers • GPS spoofing through developer options • Functional but less beauty Widgets • Gesture control (back gesture) • Fingerprint readers (although it's not a software feature it is only available on android phones) • Launcher and OS freedom + customizable • I control my device and not the other way round.

I prefer Android, but it's good to remember that not every model allows you to flash new operating systems (some have locked bootliaders). Not every model is going to be supported for long (but some like Fairphone already have a longer support time than iphone). Android is more of a mixed bag, the best setups are better than iOs, but many are worse.

The best way to socially alienate yourself is to be on android. No imessage 😂 oh what. You want everyone to use WhatsApp and messenger and pass all of your now compressed photo and video through Facebook. Yeah nah. Some of the largest software development companies, and organizations in the world all utilize iOS to manage secure deployment and management of devices. For the user, what software is going to be better. One that’s designed to run on 20-30 devices with similar hardware layouts…. or software that has to run on a million different screen sizes, resolutions, ram, button layouts, speaker configurations, cameras etc. Android will NEVER have the edge. @@ibsn87 Oh I'm not touching normal Android even with a thousand foot stick. I'm using LineageOS, basically Android without any Google services or any tracking inside it, it's very nice. Can't do that on an iPhone, heh ? Also while iOS is definitely better for privacy than normal Android, you shouldn't blindly trust Apple when it comes to privacy. They're very good at marketing, but definitely had some big controversies in the past. Also, even without using LineageOS, you can completely remove Google services from your phone if you so desire. Not sure you can do that on Apple devices ? Genuinely curious here. We can also do stuff like completely block internet access to an application, or completely block it from running in the background, which is pretty dope when it comes down to it.

@@ibsn87 Also not everyone lives in the US. Using SMS and Whatsapp - or, better, Signal - is completely normal here. Tbh I feel like we shouldn't be fighting over operations systems like this, you should just use what you prefer when it comes down to it. Also you shouldn't let yourself be alienated to think Android is inherently bad and stuff, after all it's Apple who's voluntarily not releasing iMessage for Android. If they really cared about your privacy, wouldn't that be the smart thing to do ?

@@Blueeeeeee I’ve never met a single person who runs an edge case operating system on their android device… so really. We need to compare traditional android vs iOS. As that’s what the overwhelming majority of people use. I’ve been on both. The consumer benefits of the Apple ecosystem are nothing short of phenomenal. The user experience is far far better - especially between devices. The warranty process by Apple Store is 10000x ahead of the other options. Of course they will be collecting their own data, but we have moved on from 15 years ago. There’s very little you can’t do on an iPhone these days. Unless you’re talking very edge case specific tasks. Apple have been known to push many significant security protocols and updates that have subsequently broken compatibility with old protocols- yet forced change for good…. I’m not sure people “blindly trust Apple”, but Apple was always critiqued by android users for having a “locked down system”. Which has ironically played in their favor leading them to the overwhelming domination of commercial hardware and software deployment throughout businesses, airlines, schools etc as their software has always been regarded as the most mainstream - secure and accessible and supported … I could grind away and isolate myself to the 0.1% and operate obscure operating systems, encounter app compatibility issues. I could alienate myself from the tremendous benefits of family and friends being on the same ecosystem. I and the majority of big corporations probably trust Apple with data more than I trust the other brands if I’m to be honest. Again. Sure you can avoid mainstream OS’s but I’m not up to anything shady I’m willing to accept that there is a data transfer. You can lock down most things pretty dramatically - as I’ve already done. If you’re a purest and want absolutely zero data transfer, then sure, do what you have done. But…. Data is a 2 way street. There is a lot of benefit associated with using a mainstream device. The question is - which is the lesser of 2 evils. And alienating yourself to a less compatible, less updated, less supported operating system is like running Linux on a pc because you refuse to use Microsoft Windows isn’t my jam.

Apple's Advanced Data Protection is the only thing keeping me on iOS. I want my photos to be private without giving up the convenience of having face recognition, search etc. I know Ente Photos is a thing but it doesn't have streaming for videos yet so if you want to watch a big video it has to fully sync to the device first which can take a long time and file size is limited too. I know there is Immich which can be self hosted and stored on an encrypted drive on a server but then you have to maintain it etc. and it is not yet stable even though it works well.

Even though I love Distro-Hopping with linux - once Apple Silicon performance is comparable to a 7600M or higher - I'll likely switch over to a Macbook full-time in the future, just for that seamless compatibility. My MacBook is like new and runs like it and it’s 7 years old and my iPad is even older and still works like new. They all still talk to each other. The Apple ecosystem is undeniably interconnected and user friendly. like no-one debates the fact. At What point does choosing to continue with an ecosystem, “lock you in”. I can walk away, but wtf would I? Everything just works. Google was a search engine, they lost you past the search, so they created chrome. Now they can track you past the initial search. Walk away from the Pc and now they lost you again. So they created/ purchased android in 2005. Now they can track you every minute of every day that you use the phone. Go google. As if they don’t have enough information on us as it is. You likely bypassed actually reading my completely valid points. FWIW, on the flight deck right through to business applications, there’s good reasons why Apple absolutely dominate the commercial market. “Lmao”. What's important IMO is that Android did a massive step forward with security and privacy in the recent years and keeps pushing that back to older phones. The system is almost annoying at limiting permissions and battery time to any apps, including ability to let apps access e.g. only user-selected files instead of whole gallery, etc.. The level of configuration you get, same as for notifications, is mind blowing. Not to mention you have choice to use e.g. finger print reader unlike ios, where it's only face-reader cause apple says so.

I live in a country where Google has not started selling Pixels. There are _rumors_ about a possible 2025 launch, but I do not know whether Google will consider my warranty void if I install graphene on my phone (I know that this is not an issue in most of the world, but there has not been any practical/legal precedent set in my country as of yet). I also don't know if my banking/financial apps will work, and if I can get *any* developers to care about my plight if they do not (I also work in tech, and the approach to integrity checks is abysmal here). Which leaves me with apple devices as the most reliable devices with decentish security/privacy that I can actually acquire.

Android profiles are quite a bit more robust. Android profiles allows you to install two versions of the same app, have two different VPN slots, etc. It's almost like a second phone alongside your main one (similar to multiple user accounts on desktop operating systems.) But yes iOS profiles are really nice for notification separation and homescreen customization. It just doesn't have many implications for safety :)

For people who know then yes, but for consumers who are unaware, privacy could be everything they own but they don't know about. Many ppl have fallen for fake ads, scams & phishing because they don't know anything. Cyber hygiene is the most important thing in this day & age and it's a duty for the experts & experienced, if you will to open ppl's eyes abt how important it is because it does happen in real life. I've never got any phishing attempt while some of my friends who don't do anything abt their digital privacy fell into those traps. You might thing digital privacy isn't important because you're already an expert on keeping your digital space clean but for those who don't know, they need to be aware of it all because again, it could be their everything and they just don't know it

I have picked Android for the amount of control you get with it I do wish there were other options though as even android can be somewhat limiting. For example a lot of apps lose functionality the second you rood the device like having root control all the sudden makes it less secure. What it really means is that you as the user have the control and can grant control to other applications as desired where as on an unrooted device google is the one with the control and apps like banking trust google a lot more than they trust the user. Unfortunately they can be right but personally I would still prefer to have that control myself. I will say that if you are not willing to take the time to harden android you are probably better off with ios as google tries to spy on you as much as possible by default.

btw you didnt mention that android is open source unlike ios and most of the ios options your mentioned are just what Apple claims to do, you cant really check if its bullet proof or not

That iPhone ecosystem is a cybersecurity savings grace. No malware. No bugs or worms. SIEM accounts…mfa…encryption…just good on security hardening.

I have an iPhone 15 pro max and an S24 ultra and love both. I agree with most of what you said, but i think apps on iOS run and look better than android.

More Apps Better Apps I had to switch back to IOS just because i couldn't see the ugly app interfaces and app optimization on android.

Yeah, as much as I want to like android… they have cool phones like the nothing phone - but a lot of the apps are just ugly and not optimized, and therefore laggy und buggy. It’s awful.

Apple’s chips in the newer iPhones pass data thru the phone before going thru the software called E2E encryption. Not secure. Google’s tensor chips do the same. Privacy is gone unless you move off the grid. Keep digging.

Thanks to the DMA, could KZbin channels now be segmented between European Union Tech Channels vs um, everywhere else? Hmmm...

When apple stuff is end-to-end encryption, one end is the phone, what is the other end. What I am asking, is if Apple has zero knowledge.

ADP by itself makes iOS objectively superior than any Android device. Apple also collects dramatically less data than google, although it isn’t zero. FaceID is both easier to use and more secure than Touch ID by far. Excluding flashing grapheneOS, there’s no reason to use Android for people who care about privacy & security. Apple is superior in that regard. Everything else is debatable and/or personal preference.
