Are you writing native apps? I had a short career as a professional mobile app dev, about a year and a half. I was writing apps in react native for both android and ios. I didnt really see a big difference between the two using this method. As long as I was using popular dependencies that was working for both, it was really simple to add them to the plist on ios, almost easier than messing with the manifest and gradle and whatnot on android. I was working on a mac so I had access to the surprisingly fast and responsive iphone simulation built into the mac. Simulating android phones were not as good so I relied more on physical devices for testing
@ToonSheik Жыл бұрын
As both a native iOS and Android developer (not reactive native), both platforms are equally easy to develop for. Besides there as been a lot of convergence between two. Kotlin and Swift are now very similar, Compose and Swift UI are very close, the ecosystem and general mobile dev philosophies have become so close that I can switch between them pretty seamlessly. You can almost architecture both platforms the same way for the same app. Besides, if you are actually a developer, you can install any app on you iPhone since you have a developer certificate.

Agree on the points why Android is losing out. The pricing is one part, of course. Performance really is not that distinguishable anymore, aside from the most serious users. My biggest complaint is with customization: they played Apple's game by following them in taking out expandable storage, removable batteries, charging bricks, etc. Instead of being the one putting pressure on Apple, they followed Apple and tried to be like them. Samsung even had the gall to throw shade at Apple about not removing the charger on their boxes, but they quickly followed suit. The things that made Android the anti-Apple has been slowly stripped off. If they have basically the same stuff as Apple, then people would then considering going the other way instead of Android having them on their hands.

Sometimes removing feature is just the right thing to do, not just following Apple. Want good waterproofing? You need to ditch the removable back plate. You want cheaper shipping and marketing “for the environment”? Remove the charging brick (and nowadays everyone has one so there’s just no need to include one). It’s just that Apple is brave enough (and wealthy enough) to take on that big initial risk.

My biggest gripe that I have been having with Android phones lately is that they have been basically copying Apple in all of the wrong ways. I've noticed this as early as the Galaxy S6. In that phone they took out the removable battery and the SD card slot. I remember being very upset about that, and that was all the way back in 2015. The next model, the S7, brought back the SD card slot, but it still didn't have the removable battery. Eventually they removed the SD card slot again in the S21 and haven't brought it back since. That to me is one of the biggest features of Android, and I don't think any of the major flagships this year have it. My current phone is an S20, which is the last Samsung Galaxy to have an SD card slot. It's been 3 years since I got it and I'm hesitant to upgrade to anything because of this. And then of course there's stuff like removing the headphone jack, not including a charger in the box, etc. that Apple started and for some reason Android developers followed. Seems to me like it would be such an easy thing to just not do that stuff and they could easily regain market share.

The difference between flagship phones nowadays is so minute on the specification list. It really does just come down to usability. iPhone is dramatically easier to use than any other phone I’ve tried. Everything takes less clicks, is more automated, more simple, easier to understand, etc. also because so many people have iPhones, not being able to use iMessage or FaceTime or Airdrop with your friend or family becomes a huge inconvenience to the user. Instead of blaming the iPhone user for not having a Android or specific messaging apps, it is usually shifted the blame on Android, where it feels like they’re asking you to go out of your way to use email, messenger, Skype, Discord, or other platforms to do what an iPhone can do with another iPhone out the gate.

They basically found a way to recreate the green vs blue bubble effect with FaceTime. Another recent thing worth noting nowadays is the “sign in with Apple” feature. They’ve made it so easy to sign in and manage so many logins on 3rd party sites and apps from an Apple device, but then they made it so that “sign in with Apple” is a total pain in the neck to do from non Apple devices. i prefer the simplicity, effectiveness, security and interface of the iPhone and i’m saying this as a person who has come from 4 generations of androids (growing up with them). my first was the blackberry, then a sony Xperia and Samsung S4 and then Samsung J4+. after the J4+, which was a couple of years ago, i realised the gap between apple and android was rapidly shrinking and iPhones were becoming more popular and i dismissed this mostly, however the risk of Huawei that was presented in 2019 and the discontinuation along with the rising price of new samsungs further cemented Android’s inevitable decline to me and the iPhone x would have come out around that time, which saw massive expansion in their brand and status (even tho people shat on the whole notch design). at this point of time, technology has come a long way and me (a 17 year old), the new trend is efficiency not bragging about specs that don’t translate into consumer experience. seeing as how my experience with iphones are much smoother (i tried out my dad and brother’s new samsungs and found the switch staggering for me) it just seems like android users are clinging onto the old tales of the past of which iPhones are just more expensive and just for the brand, where as that’s LITERALLY what androids are marketing themselves to be now - the premium brand. androids became popular from accessibility and performance, and now that almost everyone owns phones and phones have become a much more significant part of our society, i think it’s safe to say iPhone can only go up from here. also, the optimisation and updates for android are more jarring because they can’t really tailor app performance to all different brands of smartphones that go under the android banner meaning their scope is which wider and can’t focus on one device only and i’ve found this to be the case with iPhone’s apps being more optimised for an iPhone. it’s like a car, you can have the power train but if you don’t have the perfect aerodynamics that work for that car, it’s not gonna live up to its full potential. i can go on for longer, but i think these key take aways are enough

I once was a diehard Android user, but the straw finally broke when the Camera of my one of my phones had a software based focusing issue. I waited months for a fix to finally be released by Samsung, but nothing came. It was just one of many things that piled up over the years, things like small and major bugs to Android loosing its ability to access the deeper folder structure without the need of a 3rd party app and root access. Also, it's really convenient to just plop in an Apple Store and having your phone repaired in hours or days instead of having to send your phone halfway around the globe, waiting for weeks just to be told your phone is beyond repairable when a previously separate charging port board borked your whole phone.

I will also say the lack of speedy updates. If there is a bug on the iPhone, Apple is likely to send an update in less than a month. In theAndroid world, users are expected to put up with this nonsense.

@armamentarmedarm1699, Micro sd cards, 1440p displays, removable batteries, ir blasters to use as a remote for controlling a TV and any device that uses an ir receiver. I used to put a 10,000 mah battery to replace the stock battery on the samsung galaxy note 4 when I used to have the samsung galaxy note 4. The removable batteries are tool less and cost less than going to a 3rd party repair shop to replace the battery. The samsung galaxy s5 and the galaxy active phones have removable batteries that are water resistant. Headphone jacks are what is needed to use the fm radio. Whenever I use the fm radio, the fm radio says to plug in wired headphones from the headphone jack to use the headphone jack as an antenna. The headphone can be used to plug in a wired external cable microphones. Using the usb c port for smartphone accessories will wear out the port faster than using the standard headphone jack. Using a battery case makes the usb c port with usb c dongles no longer usable. I tried using a headphone jack adapter being plugged into a battery case and the audio still comes out of of the phone speakers. Having a headphone jack does not require any work arounds and you can't use the same bluetooth headphones for long term use due to the disposal batteries that are not user replaceable. Wired just work and are just plug and play. Wired headphones are 100% reliable. There are wired headphones that have user removable removable cables and user upgradeable cables that use the headphone jack. The wired headphones can be converted to bluetooth with a bluetooth adapter. Wired headphones have unlimited use without battery degradation and have superior sound quality than bluetooth headphones that sounds mediocre and are more affordable than bluetooth headphones that have to be constantly be replaced. The wired headphones also has better microphone quality when talking on the phone and there is 0 latency with wired headphones.

I think one of the biggest factors in apple's favor is consistency. When you buy an iPhone you know exactly what to expect. A more or less stable experience that's simple and familiar. With android, companies are constantly changing and you never know what you're going to get next time. But above all in this category, it's old hardware. I've been consistently using an iPhone 8 as my former primary phone and now my secondary phone for years, but it hasn't stopped getting feature updates until just this year. If I got any old android phone, I'd probably have gotten rid of it years ago.

I love my s21 ultra. Though compared to an iPhone, it does feel like we're paying for an inferior product. For example, Genshin Impact at medium settings can barely run at 30fps, with the resolution clearly being lower than native. Whereas on the equivalent iPhone at the time, it was capable of running at native res, 120hz max settings. While I understand optimization per platform plays a big role, it doesn't change the fact that it's still an inferior experience. Imagine how it feels paying $1k for an inferior experience at anything. I used to be all about the talking points with the smoother 120hz display on my androids years before apple finally adopted it, and now I realize consistent 60fps in every application is FAR better than 120fps in the menu, then dying at 15fps in anything that remotely requires graphical computation. With that being said, I don't feel like I would "own" an iPhone. It doesn't give the same freedom of being able to do whatever you want with it like most devices running android and that's unfortunately the reason I won't be switching. Though that apple xr headset is looking real good. Some competition from android is starting to show up for it- but guess what? It will have zero optimization, Genshin will run at 30fps on it in 480p, and it will melt your brain off with whatever the new qualcomm crapdragon is. And because I care about my privacy and the feeling of owning the things I buy, I'll have to go with it over the Apple Vision. It's also clearly just going to be another repeat of the Android and Apple race. The apple Vision product line will have the superior computational power, visuals (4k per eye), higher refresh rate, better battery life, every major existing application being able to run natively on it, etc. Natively like Genshin Impact, photo and video editing software, Camera looking good in third party apps. The android competitor hasn't even released yet but here's the repeat rundown of how it's gonna end up: There will be 2 apps that run above 60fps, that being the menu and your gallery. It will have a 20 minute battery life. Watching a youtube video in 240p will increase the temperature of the cpu to the surface of the sun. It will have 720p per eye, 15 degrees field of view, and the pixels will be the size of your break pedal. This is coming from someone that has always dissed Apple. I'm just frustrated. It's like no company that makes Android devices has ANY desire to improve the industry. Everyone is out doing their own thing. Google deliberately destroying the android open source project. Samsung pretending like they are an Apple competitor in the US market, trying their best to make the worst possible cooling system for their devices. I don't even blame them for giving up. Look at qualcomm, putting in zero effort to optimize the chips for their biggest clients. What type of developers would bother with making a good running app for a Phone running on an OS that hates the hardware, being powered by a chip that's unoptimized for the hardware or OS, running in a form factor that would turn it into a stove? To this point I don't even blame the developers of Snapchat for keeping the camera crap and Genshin Impact for not bothering with performance optimizations. If the makers of the devices don't care then no developer should either. This rant went on for a little longer than I suspected

Yeah the smartphone game really has changed a lot since I got my first smartphone (the galaxy s4). Back then the standard price for a flagship was $649, removable batteries and expandable storage were king (on android at least), and each phone was significantly better than the last. You could easily upgrade every year or even half year between brands and see noticeable improvements. Now, you could honestly go a couple years between phones and barely tell them apart. And I also agree that apple has gotten significantly better with the iPhone. It used to be in my mind that android was way better than iPhone, but I don't really feel that way anymore. The new iPhone is just as, if not more capable, than my Samsung phone. Now I don't really like apple as a company and I can't really ever see myself switching from android, but I certainly can understand why a lot of people do.

So something I do want to make a comment on is premium vs budget. As you mentioned Samsung flagship is as expensive as apples flagship, but Samsung has an equivalent to apples budget device as well. As do some of the other smartphone brands. As for the decline, I think there is a bit more complexity then what is presented. As you hinted at the end is the tech echo system. As someone who is not part of the apple ecosystem at all. It becomes a nightmare to get certain apple devices to play nice with external devices. Which in turn can make a consumer feel compelled to buy into.

2017, people got enraged that the flagship iphone now started at $1000, coming with 64gb of storage and 2 camera lens. 2023, the flagship iphone is still $1000 with 128gb of storage, 3 camera lens, improvement on all areas. how much inflation has gone up in the last 6 years? About 29%. So everything has gone up nearly 30%, and the flagship iphone is not only much better, but the same price. Apple's biggest gain on the market is that it's no longer "way more expensive" but in fact, it's much more reasonable, and 2nd hand phones are actually quite cheap. They no longer use high prices and margins as their source of income. Instead they are to entice more people into the system, under their umbrella. No matter how new or old the phone is, once you start using one, you are part of the ecosystem of app store and apple services. Apple stopped making products for apple fans. They started making a product for everyone.

My first Android was the Note 3, I've switched back and forth but currently, I'm on a Samsung, however a lot of the time I prefer to stay with Android there are two major things that are preventing me from switching back. Which is the clear all notifications and the separate wipe-up screen for all apps. I much prefer this way so it's nice and clean on the home screen. Until Apple brings these two features to iPhone idk when I'll switch back. Also, I'm a dev and it's a lot easier to get applications that can utilize the functionality of the phone ex heat mapping for wireless or checking the channels. Well, for the clear all notifications, you have to press and hold (force touch) the X button on the top right of the notification stack and a "clear all notifications" option will appear. In fact with iOS 16, there's more options by force touching the icons like the flashlight brightness, widget option, etc but they are kinda hidden as many people are unaware that you can press and hold for this option. As for the wipe up all apps, yeah that sucks but I just swipe half up and clear the app when closing instead of the normal close each time.. so it's everytime force close the app. Definitely would be better for a clear ram option tho. Side note, one thing I found better on ios (as I use my phone as a main device even for work emails and docs) is that the files app is amazing. Zip and unzip files, create a zip file from a bunch of files, drag and drop pdf etc to whatsapp and outlook, native file like system with online storage iCloud and OneDrive as a folder location instead of a separate app to drag snd drop between locations...just like on pc...and the seamless icloud photo backup Google files is literally not on par and I prefer Samsung's my files app which still is behind apple files app

I've ended up buying the watch, because it syncs to the phone, and the air pods because they sync automatically. Now I want to get a tablet and it "makes sense" to get an iPad (which are really expensive for the good ones) because it will work with the other stuff, even though an Android tablet could probably do 90% of what I want it for. I play games on PC, so I will never need a Mac (thank the maker), but the more I get sucked into Apple's walled garden, the more expensive everything ends up being. I like small phones, my current one is an iPhone 12 Mini, but now that Apple has stopped making small phones I can see a future where my next phone is Android. But then I lose the compatibility with all the other Apple crap I've bought. Apple's a trap.

Although apple is getting better and better you don't have any privacy in apple phones. Apple looks at your messages, phone calls, pictures and even when you unlock with face id they take a picture of yourself sends it to the apple database and checks if you are actually the person of the iPhone and quickly deletes the picture.

The real problem is device in general, when was the last time you actually had ‘fun’ using a phone, any phone. Not the apps and software, I mean, just having a phone in general, phones are consistently copying each other, they are constantly just the same thing. We need, a new device, a new thing. Getting a phone for the first time was fun, same with the laptop.

The trend is really more of a correction than an alarm. The global breakdown between the two should be closer to 50% since there are literally only 2 major mobile operating system. Apple is obviously gaining from network effects from their ecosystem but the simple fact is that there will always be a large group of people who aren't comfortable being highly leveraged in just one company for all the consumer electronics. There are people who are totally comfortable having their phone, computer, laptop, tablet, TV, home speaker, headphones, music, content, cloud storage, and credit card all handled by the same company. And there are a lot of people who'll never allow themselves to be that silly. There are a large group of people who couldn't care less if Apple just works because it puts you completely at their mercy the moment you buy 2 or more of their products. Anyone who thinks that one day Apple is going to have 70% market share and no one will be making apps for android, has to also believe that Apple won't some day have some massive security breach that compromises over a billion people at the same time and has people's identity stolen and bank accounts drained because they had everything connected through one company. Apple is a very attractive target to bad actors and will only become more attractive the closer its market share approaches 50.

I can't really explain it all in a comment so tl;dr Google gives users and devs the choice to depend on Google or not while Apple you're stuck with them. Key examples are Huawei which (granted due to legal reasons) doesn't have any Google apps preinstalled, Samsung who completely flips the "intended experience" and LineageOS which is a popular community created system that goes farther than even Huawei in completely removing Google from their OS (and supports a variety of phones including Google's own devices)

@@yellowwinner1and as a result you get a lot of performance inconsistency across the Android space. Apple’s control allows them to always be the architects of how apps feel to the end user, and for a lot of people, it’s just nice to have consistency across different apps and use cases. On the other hand this is an iPhone limitation as well, the experience is far more vanilla but for some that’s boring.

The answer is actually quite simple 1. The iphone 6 was revolutionary 2. Airpods and apple watch were a fashion statement. 3. IOS updates for years means your iphone doesnt go obsolete. 4. No average person wants to customize their phone. 5. The iphones are just too smooth and feels more premium. For example in 2024, an iphone 6 feels more premium than a new budget android. These are the reasons why everyone is running to the iphone. Most Androids starts to misbehave after a year but iphone remains smooth and cool

@Incidental10411 ай бұрын
Absolutely, I belong to the 8%. Let me explain. Unresponsive interfaces, sporadic updates, a staggering two years of updates (unbelievable), lack of improvement, sluggish performance, lower quality apps, and more. Sure, the 240MP hexacore Android may sound superior on paper, but in reality, the iPhone delivers a smoother, more polished experience that lasts for years. After experiencing these frustrations, I made the switch to iOS, and I don't see myself returning anytime soon. Let me put it this way. Take a look at an iPhone XS compared to a Galaxy S9 in 2024, and you'll find there's no comparison. The iPhone XS remains a highly usable phone, smoothly running the latest OS and apps, while the Galaxy S9 is practically on the verge of becoming e-waste. The longevity and performance of the iPhone truly stand out over time. Lastly many of Android's selling points have been integrated into iOS over the years leaving no logical argument for going with an Android in 2024.

My pixel has 7 years of monthly software updates. Not a huge Samsung fan but Pixels feel like a way more polished experience. They're better price wise especially second-hand. I don't hate Apple either, I use Macs I just don't like how they purposely hold back their hardware for sales, and they're trademark, "it's more expensive to fix this device so just buy a new one." And the fact that they need a government to force them to be consumer friendly.
@thomasa.24311 ай бұрын
@@meroinheroin Even new Samsungs have the 7 years support and honestly, Samsung and Google get closer and closer (which they must in order to compete with Apple). And speaking of prices, I am talking about European prices, the iPhone is still much more expensive than most Android devices. The iPhone 15 is 10% more than the Galaxy S24 for example. And last year's S23 is holding value as good as the iPhone 14. Kind of interesting how things are different here compared to the US 🤣. Although, I must admit, it is nowadays less "Android vs iPhone" but practically "Samsung vs Apple"...
@Incidental10411 ай бұрын
@@meroinheroin I must disagree I think eh European parliament and regulators unfairly target Apple. They want Apple to open up iOS and MacOS (it is only a suggestion now) but I don't see them going after Microsoft for deliberately locking windows from running natively on the M series Macs, or Samsung for locking OneUI only to its devices, at a certain point these regulations become ridiculous. And to your pixel comment where is Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 interns of software support? Only time will tell if Google and Samsung will deliver on their promises but as it stands plenty of Samsung devices that could run OneUI 6 and cost over 800usd simply don't run it and never will.
@meroinheroin11 ай бұрын
@@Incidental104 pixel 2 is as old as the iPhone 8 which also doesn't give you software updates anymore. The EU targeted them because they're hostile in terms of repairability/ proprietary software interoperability specifically to increase their revenue. If *you* are able to get windows running natively on your M1 MacBook you can still buy the licence. It would make sense that a Microsoft hasn't committed a dev team to get the OS to run Natively on Apple's proprietary hardware and preferring you to license through parallel. Similar issue with OneUI. (Which is a rough example btw because you could install AOSP on basically any smartphone and still use the same features.) It's unfeasible to expect Samsung to build and optimize their OS skin for other hardware since they don't really license it to begin with. No one is asking Apple to port IOS to Android they just need to be operable with things as elementary as text messages.

Both Android AND Iphone sales have been dropping because people are buying smartphones less and less. If you compare the Iphone 15 to the 14, 13 or even 12 the designs are very similar, it seems to be the same thing for android, we can not know for certain until the s23 comes out but it looks like companies are not expecting people to upgrade every year. Android sales are going down because smartphone sales are going down

Personally, if Apple doesn’t bring back the mini (with usb c) and allow some type of 3rd party app store then I am switching to android next time I upgrade. If I can’t have a feature-rich phone in a reasonable size then I am going to get something that has more niche and open apps and more fun form factors. Foldables have really made strides in recent years so Id probably get one of those. The only apps I care about on ios are also available on iPadOS so I wont be missing much if I switch.
