Iowa: Better Than Montana

Iowa is a great battleship, and because of the matchmaker t9 ships get it is a far more powerful ship than Montana. I recently have been on a binge of t9 ships, and found myself playing Iowa and actually enjoying myself. It was a ship I largely skipped due to liking NC more and wanting to get Montana.

Honestly most of the Tier 9 BBs should have been Tier 10 contenders, thats how it was originally until they added overmatch mechanic and gave yamato everything else. Then they needed Montana at tier 10

I absolutely love the Iowa, it's pretty much the perfect allround battleship to me. The guns feel decent, the survivability is not great, but all in all sufficient, the anti air works quite good enough, and what I love most about the Iowa: The combination of concealment and speed makes it so extremely versatile when it comes to positioning, adapting and controlling the engagement. So all in all I can absolutely confirm: Even in 2021 the Iowa is an awesome ship at Tier IX.

AFAIK Iowa sigma has always been 1.9, same as Montana and slightly worse than NC's 2.0 (but you get that dispersion upgrade). But I agree, Iowa feels much better today than when I first grinded through it over a year ago. It's either the matchmaker putting T9 as top tier more often, or I'm simply a better player now than I used to be, or both. Either way, it's a pretty solid ship and I tend to have good games in it even with just a 10 point captain.

It still trolls you nowadays too... I've had fights with cruisers or BBs even at 6-8 kms, you aim at a flat side and you get 2 pens with the rest of the shells going drunkenly in the water or sailing past the enemy. Meanwhile you get penned trying to just reposition or outright citadeled, depending on who's shooting at you.

One thing that really leveled up my game was to not rush in every fight. During my first year of this game I played mostly co-op to get familiar with the controls and gameplay. But that game mode heavily favored rushing into battle or you only get 1-2 hits no kills due to the AI being more forgivable. Now in random battles I only go max 3/4 speed at the start. Which had upped my survivability a lot!

This map is one of those maps where sometimes the enemy just folds on one side. The bbs turn out and around and the cruisers follow and at that point its fookin harvest time. Creeping into the center, especially if you can remain unspotted or atleast move in the areas where death does not walk, you can reap a fearsome tally before the enemy can adjust. Just yesterday i slapped 4 ships that way.

Good video. I recently reset the American BB line and found when I got back to Iowa that I liked it a LOT more than I had the first time. Like you, I now like it much more than the very power-crept Montana which feels anemic at tier 10. Unlike my last grind, the Iowa feels a lot more like a tier 9 North Carolina.

I recently just finished grinding through the Iowa, and it's probably the only high tier battleship that I: a) completed the grind through, and b) ended that grind with a positive winrate. It's so damn consistent and I'm a lot more confident in playing it at any range because of how good the guns are, and of course the matchmaker. Whether it's brawling, sniping, or playing second line, Iowa does it all with a consistency that I've yet to see on any other BB I've played so far.

Anyone playing Colobado in order to grind to the Vermont ought to get used to the experience, LOL. The tiers 8-9 tech ships on that line appear to be really garbage, and frankly a good player will have more influence on a battle in pretty much any other tier 10 BB than Vermont (well I suppose FDG is questionable, especially with the awful implications of the captain skill rework).

I bought the Georgia and I had problems with the speed of the shells, I only do 50k of damage at most I have 30 games and I still do not get used to it, is there any method of aiming for the American battleships?

Tbh everyone loves NC dispersion, but I honestly don’t feel the difference a lot of the time. It feels like most of my shots at 12-15 km don’t group up and I regularly have massive vertical spread that makes citadeling CAs a pain. At long range, the dispersion feels like i could fit a CL between each shell.

Iowa is phenomenal. It only has one major drawback. Its a long, long, and did i mention, long ship. Rudder Shift is almost mandatory.

Would love to see the Iowa get a bit better rudder shift and a big AA buff against Tier X CVs and I'd be happy. I find it can tank pretty well nose-in when it's speed has gotten you a bit too far forward while the rest of the team is still in the J/I-Line 5 minutes into the match. Just finished grinding exp for Montana but I'll still be playing Iowa until I can afford the Monty. edit: I must have missed the unsporting behavior of that Kitakazi. Maybe you should stick to ranked if you don't understand that random in random matches also applies to skill level.

I "fixed" the AA problem by going secondaries on it. All the secondaries :| It buffed the AA a bit too, at least now it swats some of a Shokaku's squadron away before he drops me instead of just watching them approach and waiting to get slam-dunked.

Too bad this was pre-rework. Does dead-eye and increased accuracy in last upgrade slot provide diminishing returns on the lowered dispersion?

I used to think Montana was powercrept, and didn't touch her for years. Just 2 months ago when I started to grind Montana for the Unique Upgrade mission that was about to end, I realised that wasn't true. She is still very strong, with a proper build and positioning. I spec for max DCP time (special upgrade slot 1, and consumable upgrade in slot 5). This makes my Montana almost invulnerable to HE spammers (38mm deck, 31s DCP time, and a very strong heal with upgrade 5). Even though conceal is a bit bad, it reminds me to stay ~15km away from enemy cruisers, reducing the risk of being over aggressive. At the end of the mission chain, I got 62% WR over 100 battles on Montana, that is surprisingly good Don't get me wrong here, Iowa is a really strong ship, and I really love her with 300+ battles. However, I don't think Iowa is anywhere near the power of Montana in terms of tankiness and alpha dmg. The more preferable MM on tier 9 is true tho

I highly encourage grinding this ship for fun. Despite having a bad hull and speed when you get her, her fully upgraded form is really scary, especially when top tier

This ship is an absolute monster. Especially with a high point captain or with Halsey or Doe as your commander. I still play her for giggles. She isn't the best tank but I've bow tanked and traded against Russian ships until they lost patience and made a mistake. Enjoy her when you get her

Disregarding Georgia and Alsace's speed boost, Iowa is the fastest BB of her tier. It can even chase down Destroyers provided it doesn't have to make too many turns.

I mostly play tier 10 cruisers i have zao petro and yoshino and 1 bb kremlin. Iowa was always a great ship. Whenever i see an enemy iowa i always try to kill it or run away.

The Iowa is amazing. I tried the German and Sovjet battleships; but the guns on the Iowa are so much better. First time I played the Iowa I made more than 150 k damage for the first time ever. North Carolina and Iowa are the easiest BB´s to play in the game. Great!

Roses are red, Violets are blue. The Iowa may be fast But the Georgia is faster The iowa is my favorite ship to play, after the atago. It beats my Jean bart. I played the Iowa stock to save credits, and even stock it feels better than the Monty. Monty straight up needs a buff, sure it has potential as people say, but so does every ship. The stats don't lie, it's a great deal below average.

I enjoy Iowa more, I find Montana more reliable... I find NC REALLY strong, but I found Iowa's guns better, doesn't get as randomly wide horizontal shells at times and they have better ballistics... The thing is T9, T8 is a lot more fun right now... I've been OVER T10 for such a long time, gameplay is stale AF

Miss the old days when ALL BBs other than the Germans were like NorCal still is in that if you misplay and get caught you take citadels/monster damage. These days WG of course dumbed it down, chasing the lowest common denominator, hence you see plays like that Jean Bart sailing absolutely broadside on without getting slaughtered. I suppose one might have pretended WG did it to encourage movement since the penalty of advancing and being flanked isn't as great, but we all know that's not the real reason. The captain skill rework is going further to entrench static, long range, bow in, HE spamming dull garbage. I suspect that's because, in WG;s thinking, that's how people play and it's far easier for WG to move the meta to suit how people play than have players need to understand good v bad play. In other words, I suspect long range bow tanking sniping and HE spam simply reduces the influence of skill, and we know WG doesn't like skill to be TOO important because they believe mass casual "don't understand much nor do we care" player doesn't like it if they have to learn too much. Maybe they're correct. On the plus side, I suppose all those Mongqueror players you see at the back of the map on full health at the end of the battle they lose will have plenty of company, LOL.

I think the Problem ist the historical 16Inch-Guns. The Colorado has them, die North Carolina, the Iowa and the Montana. T7-T10 all have the same caliber and the same penetration of armor. The Montana is a fictive ship. It was planed but never build or planed to the end. Maybe they should give the Montana 18Inch-guns instead of the 16inches. This makes sense, because in this game the germans build bigger battleships than the Bismarck/Tirpitz and the japanese more Yamatos and bigger guns. The normal progress ist, to optimize the own new ships this this threat. And this was normaly done with more armor (panamacanal, not possible) and more caliber-guns, which should be possible. Or besser Ammunation for more penetration or damage.

How to try out Slava for yourself, and see if it's worth the grind (spoilers: it isn't): Step 1: get an Iowa. Step 2: Put Artillery Plotting Mod 2 on instead of MBM3. Step 4: hang around middle distance. Step 5: Don't grind for Slava anyways and have fun with Iowa
