Hey everyone and welcome back to Iowa Classic Cars! In Today's video, we pull my favorite car of all time out of the woods and a ravine, the 1959 Chevrolet impala hardtop! This 59 impala has been sitting in this ditch for at least 40 years, so we did our best to dig it out and keep it one piece as we pulled it from its long slumber. The story is not clear as to why this impala was dumped in the ravine so many years ago, but its my job to unearth it and bring it back into the light of day. Will this 1959 Chevy be able to be rebuilt, or is it parts? Check out the full video to find out!

@@IowaClassicCars As someone who was dragging these cars out 15 years ago I'm just saying what I'd do. We flopped over a '40 Chevy convertible left upside down in an old yard and dragged it up and it came out in three pieces, should have cut it apart. A '59 convertible we sold out of the same yard didn't split in half, but also didn't quite fit on the hauler's trailer with the Caddy hearse so we just cut it off behind the rear wheels, the frame and floor was gone anyways. When they're that bad the only way around it is for you to choose where to cut them apart rather than let the car choose and bend stuff up on you. That Impala is so rotted and stripped that past the stainless there's just no real value in it. That's why we passed on that one 58 convert, it would have had to have been cut all apart, the top was left sticking up in the air, and who knows what if any of the frame was left. I don't think it would have brought $1500 at the time and that up and rolling as a donor.

Man, a waste and no surprise...welding some braces in there would have saved that car...(taking a generator and a welding machine on site and installing some x-braces would have done it. I've been there, I pulled a 67 RS/SS Camaro convertible in two dragging it out of a leaky shed, but over a couple of years built a jig and built the car back, she's a runner today and sitting in my garage. I love saving rough cars too, but now I brace everything.
@IowaClassicCars

I know what you mean, but if you were in front of this car....youd see there is no way to get a welder down there. Hell, carrying a 25 lb floorjack down there nearly killed us. The slope was so steep, youd need a hell of a long extension cord and a lot of cable for that welder because you wouldnt carry it down in there lol

@@IowaClassicCars Well I'm glad you liked the strap idea, but I was thinking there was a frame there too. Like someone else said, at least you tried. This is said in hindsight here, but probably would've been better to stop once it crested ravine, n strip all salvageable again. Then try n deal with body on a pair of 12' 4x6. But honestly, that was realistically to far to bring back IMO. Once they pull apart so much is only matter of time n distance. Yet the cowl n A pillars/ front of roof lived, so not total loss being as a title IS present. Good effort, learned more for the next one.

You know when you 1st started the video, I was not aware that the car had no frame. I thought that it was just missing the wheels. That thing never had much of a chance without a frame. Unless you built a pretty elaborate wooden cradle around it. I remember seeing this in 1 of your earlier videos. But I forget. How did it get down there and why? Did the person who sold it to you, steal the frame out of it? Hopefully you didn't pay too much for it. And atleast some parts will live on in other cars. Such a shame, the whole car couldn't be saved. 59 is such a cool year for the Impala. Actually it is my favorite year. Thanks for entertaining us. Looking forward to the next one.

The first car I drove as a kid was a 59 Chevy Parkwood wagon, 6 cyl powerglide. It was an absolute tank. Red and white, it was a pretty car. I turned 16 in 67, so she was pretty rusty when I started driving her. I shed a tear when your hardtop fell apart during the extraction. It would be neat to run the VIN and get a history on the old girl.

Hey Ryan, as I'm sure you know back 30 or more years ago people just abandoned cars when they got worn out and useless. There was nobody giving you $500 for a junk car. my best guess as to how it got there is someone just dumped it after it served its purpose and it had been there ever since. Finding abandoned cars In the woods is more common than most people think. I've found 72 so far some cars even as new as the late 1980s

Generally the same people who don't realize finding abandoned cars in the woods is normal are the same people who wonder how it got there but don't think about how it was probably not always woods or see bullet holes and assume it was involved in a crime vs just a bored hunter using it for target practice.

I can say they were determined to remove this and save the shell. A lot of hard work went into this but I am happy you saved the shell. There was a 1937 Jeep I wanted to get and restored but it was sold for scrap. Would been a nice project.

There is no such thing as a 1937 Jeep. The first prototype of what would become 'Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4X4, G503' was delivered to the Ordnance Department at Fort Holibird by American Bantam in October of 1940.

I grow playing in a green 64 biscayne station wagon stuck in a gully so I would like to pull this wagon too!! Also we pulled a 10 bolt differential from another gully to take the 3:36 ring and pinion. Outside was a junk but inside the ring and pinion was intact protected in the grease after almost 40 years buried. We took the risk.😬 Nice video, 👌

Frame doesn't mean much. Some years ago a guy called us to look at some cars and there was a '58 Bel-Air hardtop. I open the trunk and there's just the top of the diff and a couple springs poking out of the dirt. The entire frame and floor was gone back there. We didn't buy any, although I wish we'd bought the 58 convertible, even that was rough and going to be a bear to dig out.

@@IowaClassicCars I would love to show you where it is but I left Des Moines for Orlando about 10 years ago. I just couldn’t take the winters anymore. Lol, if you were following grand Avenue out past raccoon River Park about seven or 8 miles past it, One of the side streets up that way takes you to the area. You have to really look for it once you start walking through that area. It’s going to take a good set of eyes to search it down because being a small low lying car the grass and the weeds were grown up over it.

A 62 year old car that had some fine fun times I am sure till luck ran out and it wound up in a deep ditch and no one wanted to even try and get to it or out. The Belair only chrome vent on the top is quite valuable to some diligent hard to find person who is building a clone. My personal hopes were to see that the top was of value and could make another four door into a tudor hardtop conversion. The doors on the Pontiac are the same so there are parts cars out there that are buildable and worth the doing of it. A four to two door conversion can be done in less than a week with very few skills in your toolbox. I have fixed some old rigs myself so do have knowledge of how it goes. Heck, DD Speedshop does them and they turn out right fine.Some cars want salvaged and others have given up any hope of restoration. I do see some nice stainless on it that is worthy of saving it for something else.Go back to that cars grave site and paint on the hood a RIP as in born in 59 and died in 21, it went with little fight left in this rig. I will continue to watch hoping that others play better in being rescued
