@@davidhayden6481as the guys said, the movies are more about the fantastical view that China has of ip man than what he actually did. So it’s “based on a true story” in that ip man was a real person and he actually trained Bruce lee, but everything else is exaggerated. Even how he’s portrayed as a wise dude sharing words of wisdom with everyone, can’t be shaken very easily, and has zero flaws other than not being a good enough husband, is all very fantastical 1+2 are almost equally as good in my opinion. 1 has more heart but 2 has the better fights. 3 was mostly just Tyson hype but the end fight against the rival grandmaster is up there among the best in the franchise. Only 4 in my opinion is pretty trash, not even the fights could really salvage it

From the 1st one, the enemy uses karate; the 2nd one, the enemy is a foreigner; and, to be honest, I don't really remember the 3rd one currently but I recall the 4th taking something from there as well. Maybe the references to Bruce Lee? Basically, it was that which was already seen. And it really doesn't help that "Ip Man: Final Fight" is essentially the same core story except the window dressing isn't America; and personally, I prefer the older actor over Donnie in that setting even though it makes complete sense for Donnie to reprise his role once equaling or rather complimenting the correct age.

My Mom doesn't like violent movies. But you bet your ass she watched this. Her reaction was "You could really feel his anger with the death of his fellow master". You know, moms are moms. But after that, she really loved action films that showed mastery of the craft. The Raid might be too much for her. But boy she loved Ip Man, John Wick, Taken. For me, Ip Man did for Wing Chun what Ong Bak did for Muay Thai. Now I kinda want to learn both.

The lead choreographer for this film is Sammo Hung, an iconic Hong Kong action star who was Jackie Chan's classmate and the first person Bruce Lee fights in Enter the Dragon (1973). He co-starred w/ JC in Project A (1983), Wheels on Meals (1984), & Dragons Forever (1988) alongside former classmate & fellow action legend Yuen Biao. As Eric pointed out, he's not shy about quick editing in fight scenes, though he could also do long takes. Proving that it's not about what you do but how you do it. He plays a major character in Ip Man 2.

*To more clarify Chinese martial arts genres:* There's *'Kung Fu'* - the Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan stuff. follow by *'Wuxia'* which is in between Fantasy and Kung Fu - the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon stuff. follow by *'XianXia'* or *'ShenMo'* the fully fantasy and mythology stuff (gods, immortals, demons and all kinds of entities), more commonly known in the West as *Cultivation* genre. The 3 genre is the gradual progression of increasingly powerful and outlandish ability. At rare times, a major series can have all 3 elements in it, Kung Fu Hustle for example, has the first 2, Kung Fu and Wuxia. The Settings of the 3 genres are also progressively complicated. Kung Fu is 'street level', Wuxia is much larger, more akin to Star War, from governments, nations, rebels to organized crimes, factions and sects. Cultivation is Cosmic.

Sato is all about control and using power to domineer over others. He's basically the dark version of what the police captain could have been - waving his gun around to pull order into his grasp where his hands failed. Whereas General Miura at the very least has some degree of honor and genuine respect for people of skill. His first inclination, after seeing Master Ip embarrass 10 black belts in Japanese martial arts wasn't to feel shame or cowed but to reach out to have Master Ip specifically teach his Chinese martial arts to his men; in what is very much a cultural conflict, the general had no issues freely admitting Ip's Chinese style at least on par with the Japanese and his mastery well-worth utilizing. It was a dark page in Japanese history, in the years before and at the beginning of World War II, and they were fully and rightfully the villains in this theater of war. But I appreciate the nuance this film gave Miura, with Sato being genuinely villainous but the general being the antagonist.

20:10 This scene is terrifying. Throughout the entirety of the movie so far we've seen Ip Man fight in a mostly passive way. Using his opponents energy against them and fighting to win with the minimum of force applied in return. A very controlled and disciplined martial artist. This scene is the first time we see him fighting to hurt his opponents, to actually inflict damage and beat them up. The way its portrayed in the choreography of the fight is what makes this movie a cut above others in my opinion. Not only is there a story, but the fighting style is even used to portray the characters emotion. Amazing, yet terrifying.

I love martial arts movies! When this came out on blu-ray; didnt have it in the cinema or watch any trailer, I thought it could be good. I think the hype was around him being Bruce Lee's sensei. A couple of friends watched it and we loved it! We hoped more would come out and have Bruce in it.

No one talks about the music, but the score was done by Kenji Kawai. Probably most famous for Ghost in the Shell, but pretty prolific in Japanese media.

Besides the storytelling, I think what’s great about the Ip Man movies is because of the exaggerated movements and fighting. Obviously, some of those fights wouldn’t be possible in an actual fight, and obviously, it’s a heightened story of Ip Man with a couple of true elements. But I think they successfully entertained us with the Ip Man movies without sullying Ip Man’s name. When it comes to grounded action though, Donnie’s exceptional at that as well. One of his movies, Flashpoint, is an example where he used MMA (again, obviously there’ll be moments where guys get hit hard in the face and still gets up. But come on. It’s entertainment). He studied and partook in a lot of fighting styles. Dude’s a walking weapon. Lol I recommend watching a couple more of Donnie Yen’s movies (like Flashpoint or Special ID) after all 4 Ip Man movies if you guys get to them.

I relented for the IP Man series because Donnie Yen ❤ I've now seen all 4 and have watched quite a few other martial arts series with hubby. Some of the stringed choreographies and “fantastical air movements” you see here are more of your traditional Eastern martial arts choreography. If you look at early Hong Kong martial arts movies, you’ll see a lot of stringed choreographies and “fantastical air movements.” I see that someone here already explained the genre of that, which is "Wuxia." You can go to that comment if you want to know a bit more. So movies like the Ip Man franchise and some of the modern Hong Kong martial arts movies are influenced by the early era. Shang-Chi had a lot of those as well, and you can tell they were heavily influenced by the Hong Kong martial arts movie industry.

"The Legend is Born: Ip Man" is set before this from his childhood learning kung fu to becoming a master and meeting his wife. He is from a rich family who let him go to kung fu school at a young age, and his wife is also from a rich family, which is why they have a fancy house.

Unlike a lot of the details in these movies, that one about his rich upbringing is absolutely correct. His father owned several businesses in Foshan, and Chan Wah Shun (Yip Man's first teacher) was coincidently one of his many tenants. Chan Wah Shun tried to discourage the young Yip Man because in that period, martial arts were considered a blue collar pursuit, and therefore he did not want to insult his landlord by teaching his son. Supposedly Yip Man was asked to bring a considerable amount of silver as a downpayment with hopes of further discouraging his interest. However Yip Man got the silver along with his father's blessing to be taught by Chan Wah Shun. Yip Man was his 16th and final student and when Chan died two years later, Yip's tutelage fell to one of his senior brothers - Ng Chung Sok.

To answer your question, they were good martial artists because they were rich. Almost all of the famous fighters were one of three things. A member of a rich family, member of the royal family, or from either Wudang or Shaolin temple. They were the only ones who would have the time to train properly. Everyone else had to work farming etc.

Practitioner here; love the video guys. I love this movie; but funnily enough, as cool as all this Wing Chun looks, none of it works like that while fighting lol. Those chain punches have 0 power in them. but again, this is a movie as you well know. The most legit thing in these movies are the weapons her uses - the long pole, the short blades in Ip Man 2. Such good use of those. Keep the videos coming!

It's epic to see the story of the man that Bruce Lee called Master. Ip Man is without a doubt one of the most legendary martial artists in the history of the world. Donnie Yen's protegee Kenji Tanigaki is the fight choreographer and action director for the live action Rurouni Kenshin movies. They're also a solid watch. Tanigaki also directed the Donnie Yen movie called Enter the Fat Dragon. He's also the action director for Phantom Blade 0.

I’ve seen this way back 2009. Saw it over 20 times. Ip-Man is a Cantonese,martial arts from Hong Kong. It’s the story of Bruce Lee’s master Ip-Man but in Cantonese it’s pronounced Yip-Man.

Asian martial arts movies are by far the best martial arts production out there. Even professionals and actors have said that numerous times. Also, most Asian martial artist actors don't use stunt men, they do everything themselves and they will put themselves in serious pain and injuries for the sake of the movie. They go above and beyond. Are they realistic in the sense that kicking someone right in front of you can launch them 10 feet through the air? No, not at all. But are they realistic with their moves and training? Yes, definitely. Very hard core. Love your guy's reaction!!!

Donnie Yen always makes amazing choreographed fights. Any of his movies always have top notch scenes, I will always watch any movie Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan or Jet Lee are in. And asied from Ip Man 2 watch Legend of Drunken Master starring Jackie Chan, such a great movie and has amazing fight sequences. Also side note, it was a tradition back than to travel as a martial artist and challenge other great masters to both proce yourself and to learn from your losses

I was amazed the first time I watched this. I had no idea that it was made in China by a Chinese movie company. Yet it was not only a great story. But it was as good as anything coming out of Hollywood at the same time. Movies are one of the few things America does better than anyone else. But this put that belief to the test in the most amazing way. The following IP Man films continue the story and gives a fairly accurate account of his life. There are some unusual American stars in at least one of the following IP Man films. No spoilers here. But I did enjoy all of them and their production were of the same quality.

I’m so glad you guys got to delve into Ip man it’s a classic for fans of traditional kung fu cinema. If you decide to dive further into the Ip man films some fun lore is that Wing Chun despite being made famous by men it was originally invented by a woman and also when Donnie was doing the speed punches he was actually using rubber fists and the last detail is that sometimes with movies like Ip man the stunt guys and actors are so disciplined that to make it look real they have to stop a punch or kick an inch away from the person other times the actors will actually take the hit to make the scene look good

Just wanted to share a quick fun fact: If you go back to watch Iron Man 3, notice that Tony Stark has a Wing Chun wooden practice dummy in the garage of his Malibu home. He also wears an iconic Bruce Lee shirt in Age of Ultron. Robert Downey Jr. actually learned Wing Chun martial arts and in character, Tony also learned more fighting styles to supplement his Iron Man suits. You can even see him utilize Wing Chun when he was in Sherlock Holmes. He quickly eliminates his opponent with Wing Chun Kung Fu. I always thought it was really cool spotting those details.

For sure movies about Ip Man is gonna be embellished as hell since he taught and inspired Bruce Lee who went on to create Jeet Kune Do. But Donnie Yen in real life is an actual badass. Way back in the 90s when he was still young, he beat the living crap out of 8 men for assaulting him and his gf at the time outside a club. All 8 got sent to the hospital. It was even reported in local HK news at that time. So yeah, anyone trying to sneak a punch at him in real life might wanna think twice.

I heard of Ip Man from my Martial Arts teacher, our style is directly descended from him via Wong Lun Chun (sp) who was also Bruce Lee's main teacher. Ip Man was a real guy and while the story may be somewhat "embellished" he was a serious force in Fu Shon province schools. The rapid punch is called a chain punch, and is bloody fast. Imagine getting hit 8 times in two seconds. My instructor without using the chain punch could land 10 hits in about 4-6 seconds. With pads, I've been hit with the chain punch to the chest, it rattles your entire body.

Two other movies where Donnie Yen SHINES as both leading role & action director: - Kill Zone (or SPL), 2005 - Flashpoint, 2007 Both movies are cops VS mob martial arts movies. Flashpoint's final fight is one of Donnie Yen's career highlights!

37:48 You don't need wirework for that... If you do any form of acrobatics or gymnastics, you will understand how easy it is to perform those maneuver mid air. Combine that with martial art training and that counter become a very simple concept.

Glad you are reacting to a Hong Kong film. There are bountiful of amazing Hong Kong films that you should check out. I am surprised that Aaron didn't like the fantasy aspect of it. Didn't he watch RRR? It was basically the same - locals fighting colonizers in exaggerated and satisfying ways.

I actually train in Wing Chun, and in my opinion it is one of the best fighting styles. But don't get me wrong, I truly love all martial arts. Also, the long pole scene is one of the weapons used in Wing Chun. I love all of the Ip Man movies. Y'all should look into one of Ip Man's students; his name is Wong Shun Leung and even though people credit Ip Man as Bruce Lee's teacher it wasn't him, it was Wong Shun Leung. Loved this reaction! From my understanding, Ip Man did teach him for a brief period but couldn't focus on personally teaching Bruce Lee bcos he was mixed race and other Chinese people at the time wouldn't tolerate that. I could be wrong about that, but I think that does make sense when you consider that Chinese ppl also got outraged at Bruce Lee for teaching kung fu to non-Chinese people. Wasn't Wong Shun Leung known as "King of Sticky Hands" in Hong Kong or something for having a crazy win record in underground matches? I seem to have read that somewhere.
