I suspect the headphone jack flex contains the codec/amp like on the newer MacBooks. It communicates on some I2S and I2C lines. It probably contains a temperature sensor and as soon as it doesn't see that anymore it goes into "safe" mode and stops charging.

oh yea the pro's have pins on both sides in the port where as the lesser models only have it one side hence the extra pads

15:10 regarding flex damage i see alot of 2017,2018,and air 3 and 7'th gen ipads for charge issues and everyone of them has loose screws holding the port so i loctite them after replacement, its like apple know that they'll get lose and the port will fail this way otherwise there all mostly cp+tristar then maybe 15-20% need the charge fet replaced also and maybe 2% need pmic aswell

What are you using for replacement Air3 cp? The small port on the 10.5 flex is a little long to fit?

I'm going to guess this has something to do with previous electrocution via the headphones in the past. Apple have poss included some crosstalk to stop the charging? However 30 seconds of electrocution is gonna get the job done? Any schematics for this yet?

if designed correctly the only output form the headphone jack can be line level and it should be isolated , i like Dukes's idea of maybe a temp sensor on i2c but i'll dig into that next one i open . oh and i haven't looked for schematics yet but i know there's none for the 2018/6'th gen yet so i don't think so , none have fallin of the back of a truck for a few years iirc even zxw lacks them

Maybe the headphone jack has a ground disconnect when you pluged in. And you may not be able to charge with headphones plugged in.

I wonder if the headphone jack is also paired with the iPad motherboard, has any one ever tried replacing the headphone jack with another one from another iPad?

Maybe the logic is that it doesn't want to charge if the headphone jack gets a short.

My ipad pro 2018 only uses 1A when charging on a 2A Apple US charger.

It needs "smart" USB Power Delivery charger. With other "dumb" chargers it'll be slow
