Musician here - Most of my colleagues, myself included, own a 12.9 iPad pro for reading music, instead of paper sheet music. We exclusively use iPads instead of other tablets because the software we use, called ForeScore, is apple exclusive, and the 12.9" because it has to be big enough to read off of a music stand. I would love more than anything to have a large non-pro iPad, it's completely insane that the majority of the music industry owns these incredibly powerful machines just to read PDFs on a big screen. Also, Marques, we went to high school together, go cougars.

Another muso here. My current 12.9 iPad almost died on me the other day and left me contemplating a new iPad. As a healthcare consultant that (before covid) traveled every week for work, I migrated to the iPad Pro and used it as a laptop replacement for years. I didn't create documents or artifacts from scratch. My role at this point was managing teams and reviewing, editing, and improving documents and artifacts my teams created. I could do everything I needed with an instant on, always connected tablet that was 1/4 the weight and size of my laptop. Plus it was far less intimidating to sit with a client or customer and take notes with a pen on my screen than to sit there and click clack away on a laptop keyboard. All that said. The update from the A-processor to the M1 was a *massive* upgrade on the iPad Pro, an upgrade worth doing. My M1 iPad Pro benchmarks higher and has noticeably better 3D graphics than my 11th Gen Intel i7 laptop (without a discrete gpu) that was bought around the same time (and cost more). Most people could legitimately replace their laptop with an iPad Pro, especially if they would narrow the gap between MacOS and iPadOS. I use my iPad more than my laptop for basic tasks. The only thing it is missing is the app support, which keeps it feeling more like a tablet and less like a computer, even though the performance and specs of the iPad are way more like a computer than a tablet. The M2 update feels like a typical Apple update. Most the stuff is the same, but new processor and a couple gimmicky features. Not really enough to justify an update for a reasonable person, but there are so many Apple fanatics out there who simply must have the newest thing, so they’ll sell a ton.

Each person has to look at the cost benefit analysis and buy what they need/want and can afford. You can’t go wrong with an iPad if you are going to use a tablet.

I feel like this new iPad is meant for artists ( but it does 100 other things for sure like gaming and editing ). Pro artists now would use this new iPad pro or the older pro for painting, animating, using it as a secondary or primary monitor when drawing. It has a great screen, great colors, and great many things. The only downside compared to the pro Wacom tablets is that iPads are technically small. Wacom tablets have massive screens.

I don't even know if Apple will ever read my opinion, but I'll say it anyway... I hope they add the top-bottom version of the multi-app screen. I mean, sure in landscape mode the side by side multiscreen will work well, but they should also realize the the top-bottom option for portrait will also bring more possibilities as to how the iPad can be utilized. Especially for the 12.9 inch. I personally would want to experience the top-bottom multiscreen when I can only lay the iPad on a smaller desk.

The only use case I've found for the M1 Pro (and the M2 by extension) is having extra memory available when running debug builds of our iOS games - the 4-6gb you get on the iPhones often isn't quite enough, especially when you consider that the OS is going to start sending you angrily-worded messages and then kill you when you use about half of that.

IMHO, M1 ipad pro is probably the best ipad they’ve ever released for the enthusiast/prosumer. It actually covered everything I ever wanted in an ipad and I do use it to make money. I own an art shop and all my designs are from Procreate. Battery lasts plenty long. I can edit reels and short videos on the go, watch videos on the beautiful mini led screen, no latency issues, M1 makes it so smooth and powerful, even when using multiple layers on procreate or Lightroom. I just don’t see myself upgrading to an M2 after 2 years with the best ipad device I’ve used for productivity. I see myself using the M1 2021 for a good 5 years honestly. And i’m someone who enjoys getting the latest and greatest, but M2 is absolutely not worth it. Apple is just so great at creating “prestige” with its consumers that people think buying the M2 will make them the cool kid. In reality, it’s not a smart money move unless you’re filthy rich. But if you don’t have an M1 iPad, and you just want a more new product, then by all means go for it. But even still, I feel like the M1 is just perfect. It’s essentially a less expensive version of the M2. I don’t know many professionals who use iPad that often. It’s more like a secondary device to their Macbook Pros or iMac pros. For me, it’s 90% Procreate use. So unless it becomes your main workhorse, I would still recommend M1. That being said, remember that M1 came out in 2021. In 5 years I totally expect there to be an M3 and an even thinner, smaller bezel iPad pro. And if it changes drastically, to me, that’s a much better investment.

You hit the nail on the head. When I was drawing and making content it was literally perfect and could handle everything and now that I’ve stopped, and use it for school instead it can still function as my primary laptop, notebook, all my textbooks, and can handle some coding. I don’t think there’s anything a user couldn’t M1 that they could do with M2, besides be slightly faster which isn’t worth thousands imo.

Paradoxically you like most of KZbin tech reviewers only see the iPad as any other device from the perspective of video/image editing because that’s mostly what you do. People use 12,9 iPad in other industries mostly because it’s got the biggest screen and is the most reliable tablet. Since I work with classical music a lot of professional pianists use it, because it’s the only thing big enough for scores. My crew for example runs opera shows from iPads. A big iPad is the most useful device a person dealing with sheet music can buy. You seem to think that pro = best for video editing when it’s probably just a niche use for most iPad Pro users.

@@antman7673 , my 2017 iPad Pro (A10X) was a serious workhorse but when the loop of death happned and Apple didnt take responsibility for it considering its was a design flaw, I started looking for alternatives because that was $1200 down the drain with only 5 months use. Recently, I gave the iPad Pro M1, Surface Pro and Samsung S8 a reasonable amount of time testing with various apps. At first the first drawback from me not getting a Windows or Android tablet was the lack of Procreate and its new 3D painting feature but then I heard about Nomad Sculpt and the S8 got my pick. The S8 is just simply more comfortable and the pen feels more like an actual ink pen than the clunky iPad Pencil. Plus, the pen COMES WITH the S8 so its a complete package, unlike the iPad "Pro". My friend who is a tattoos artist also stated the S-Pen was a clear winner for her when she tried my older Samsung S6 that i got a quick fix while shopping for a more pro-level alternative. She mentioned that when she purchased her 2018 iPad Pro for drawing that she was blown away that the iPad Pro wasn't really "Pro" until she purchased the Apple Pencil, at least in her scenario and likely many others who are artist.

Bro, you have the most logical comment ive seen about the iPad in general. You clearly know what investing into a product actually means. The iPad M1 and M2 version are serious overkill in processing power for a tablet and even a laptop so your investment was wise. Unfortunately, many buy the iPad Pro and then "upgrade" within a year or two and that not an investment in my opinion because they should have just went with standard iPad considering they likely will never need its processing power, let alone the Pro version. You for instance are a true "Pro" user so its a wise purchase.

And don't even try to say apple is "good" ... they're gonna be sorry in the end for how they treat people like u.... the best example of how they lie to you: Giving you the OPTION to disable tracking, and when u disable it; No company can track u anymore except that apple is tracking your every move on your devices even when they said you could stop tracking, apple users are slaves of the device; it's apple that dictates what you can or cannot do and they decide how much privacy you have (which is NONE). crapple lied for so many years and was very good at covering things up, but this time they got busted and they don't realise it yet how expensive all their lies are going to be, because this discovery of illegal tracking just opened the door for the whole world to start looking deeper into apple, their secrets are going to be exposed and if you have apple stock, SELL THEM cuz they gonna plummet in the coming years... Rebuy them when the scandals are happening and you'll earn lots of money when apple in the end recovers. Remember the supermassive fines Microsoft had to pay all over the world (especially Europe)? 3:47 So you need to buy the new one for a simple feature Samsung implemented on their tablets 13 years ago...

I agree with what many say here, getting the newest and strongest one is an advantage if you plan on holding on to the devices for a long time. I have the 2018 - 11in iPad Pro which I bought in 2019 and it still runs beautifully. I plan on using it for at least 7 years or until there's a major (design and function) update. I'm happy with it. Couldn't bother less about the cameras, for all I care they could chuck it... 😂

I agree, As long as I can still email, run the basic apps and play games on my 2020 Pro which it should be ok with, I'll keep mine for another 3 or 4 years

I’ve been waiting to decide on getting the M1 vs M2 chips. Nearly 100% of my professional photography work is processed through my 2018 A12x iPad Pro but I’ve been curious about whether I’d see a noticeable performance difference with the upgrade. Food for thought still I suppose

Not really, The A12X is overkill as it is for a iOS tablet. Apple has all that power in a tablet but yet not one native app that taps into its full potential. Adobe doesn't seem to care about an optimized application for iPad Pro M-Series and likely because it would confuse and upset those using standard iPad models. Imagine seeing a "iPad Pro M-Series" only version of an Adobe application for advanced features. Its would be a mess in the reviews.

I'm using Affinity V2 apps with my A12Z iPad and never planning for an upgrade for years, + I would invest my money in actual workstation PC or laptop

If you have a nearby Apple Store, go in and check it out for yourself. That’s the surest way to tell.

My math teacher at my school has an iPad Pro with a pencil. He uses it when students have questions and draws graphs and shapes. Sometimes shares the screen to the smart whiteboard as well and take screenshots of what we went through and give it to us, which isn’t really possible unless you take a photo of the board every time before erasing it. It’s really good honestly and it doesn’t waste paper. I guess that’s a “pro” use case

You can do that on every iPad
