iPad Pro M4 First Impressions: Why I'm Not Upgrading

I love the way you present, Shiv. No hyper fast talking, no shouting, direct and clear scripts, no thumbnails with fake surprise faces, and well-assembled video with great lighting. It’s unfortunate to see the same issue I had with the iPad still exists almost four years after I tried the M1 Pro: The straight jacket that is iPadOS. Great hardware with software that feels so limiting of the user and the hardware.

A lot of work goes into it, so I appreciate your comments! I completely agree, I think this is the iPad’s biggest drawback - no matter which iPad you pick from the lineup, their hardware capabilities are currently limited by their software. That’s why I choose to use the most convenient, portable option.

I upgraded from a 2018 pro 11 to M4 11. The screen is only slightly better but difference in speed is not noticable at all. The one thing made me regret this ‘upgrade’ is the very poor quality of the new speakers. That is a massive downgrade. I am surprised that people don’t mention this.

I think the move to OLED is quite a big change, and this is even more noticeable outdoors in direct sunlight; the new screen is incredibly bright. What do you typically use your iPad for? The increase in power would be more noticeable on very intensive tasks, because the M-series chips are more than enough for carrying out basic functions. I don't think they've changed the speakers in the iPad so that's quite surprising.

​@@ShivsStudiotoo bad most of the apps on tablets are basically phone apps. You're not really going to see any difference unless you're using it for 3D modeling or something like that. I'm an artist and I use it for sketching but digital painting doesn't require hardly any processing power at all. And every professional artist that I've talked to says just go with the base model

The usb c apple pencil is compatible with the m4 ipads

That's correct, however I think the vast majority of iPad Pro users will be using the wireless charging Apple Pencils, ie. Apple Pencil 2nd Gen and Apple Pencil Pro. It also doesn't detract from the fact that the Apple Pencil Pro is not compatible with older devices, which I'm sure will disappoint a lot of users!
