This guy is good but this isn't the last word on these subjects. He's from the stickframe world, as are most builders today. Shortly we'll be incorporating more Thermal Mass or Phase Change Materials inside the envelope and using more natural systems for ventilation. Our designs should utilized more of the common sense solutions our forefathers (1000 years or more ago) had to learn and understand, before the Industrial Revolution. Most of the products he's using come from bad places, literally and figuratively, but that's not his fault, it's how the industry works in America. I just bought some corrugated metal panels for my roof in southern California. Best price by far, was from "'Best Buy Metals" in Tennessee and truck the stuff half way across the country. Where I picked the order up in California, is one of the largest steel fabrication plants in the country. Make it in California, ship it to TN and sell it to me in California and ship it back for half of what it costs at Lowes, or Home Depot. Senseless. When you design and build an 'eco' friendly house you should use local material whenever possible. We have a similar paucity of insulation products, when you take the Koch brothers and other large, petro based manufacturers off the list. Someone should figure out how to make all that plastic refuse in the oceans into High R value insulation. Other elements can save us a fortune on our building budgets that aren't even considered (generally) in our stick frame building code like Radiant Barriers, or two stage evaporative cooler/de-humidifiers and ground source heat pumps. Our controls are mostly 20th Century too; Take a look at how the electric cars manage regenerative braking and apply that to a counter balanced elevator and you'll find that elevators cost less to build than a (nice) staircase and operate as a Net Zero element. And take up a 20% smaller footprint. A 2nd Zone (similar to an Air-lock entry) or Sun-room like space acts like a layer of insulation when calculating heat loss from Zone 1 (inside the envelope) to Ambient. (Exterior) I think 3D and VR or AR technologies will open up many doorways (pardon the pun) for our imaginations when considering how to build a house for tomorrows' weather and conditions. Hell, we need a substitute for Ready Mix concrete simply because it uses too much energy to make and move around. There are dozens of small shops coming up with solutions, but what building departments will allow them to be used? What is "on the shelf" approved, affordable and ready for use? Nothing.

Do you still need a rain screen siding if applying over stucco?
@pfrieden110 жыл бұрын
That's a beautiful project! There is one thing that I'm curious about. Most rain screen installations use screens or something to prevent insects from getting behind the siding, but I don't see that here. Is this a regional decision, or is there a certain minimum gap that requires screening?

Another great video Matt! Love the details and love the aesthetic. I'm curious about how an assembly like that handles insects, though. Is there any concern about, or provision made for, insect infiltration behind the siding? Or are things spaced such that it won't make an attractive residence for them?

Did you look for any alternatives to the Ipe? I've read some articles that talk about the negative impact logging it and other tropical hardwoods are having on the rainforest (apparently the density of the trees means that for every Ipe tree that is logged up to 28 other trees are taken trying to get to it) in Brazil and it seems like a more 'green' alternative should be considered?
@buildshow10 жыл бұрын
Very good point. I would definitely suggest looking for alternatives that meet your overall sustainable objectives. Cedar or Redwood would be good choices too. You can find SFC certified Ipe too. This design might even be interesting with a grey colored Trex decking too. Best, Matt

Thermally modified hardwood might be similar with a lower environmental impact. If you’re in the USA, Americana from Pennsylvania is a good brand.

First time I have really not agreed with you Matt Or more specifically the Architects . . . Tropical Hardwood , shame on them . I really thought we new better than this by now . This should never be allowed . Also as Sarah Coffee raised the issue . . .Great home for bugs of pretty much any description . Here in the UK you would have wasps queuing up to move in . Good luck with that when they do it , because they will for certain love that gap detailing .

Matt, I know this is pretty old, but I was wondering if you think this would work with your perfect wall implementation? Do you think this product can substitute for the Carlisle layer and be moved to the outside of the foil faced polyiso rigid foam? I'd guess adhesion would be the main concern and that the polyiso foil becomes the vapor barrier.

I like more information on it I have a home built 1953 1/2 was covered by old aluminum siding the back had 2 lean toos which after I tore down particle board of chip.board
@gabrielr45117 жыл бұрын
Are you screwing the siding directly into studs or just the strapping?
@refusoagaino68246 жыл бұрын
I can guess this wall system has at least two 'layers' that are separated on purpose to maintain the integrity of both the vapor and air barriers. Where those are depends on where the house is, in Austin, those requirements are minimal because it's a dry, desert climate. Nailing through that would not be permitted, it would also be thermal bridging. Plus, the furniture quality finish means that every nail, screw or fastener has to go in one time, exactly right, no mistakes. You can't do that when the stud location is an approximation. Who ever put the siding up, did the 'backing' preparation an knew 'like the back of his hand' where to put every fastener.

What stops bugs from nesting back there? I see nothing. In Florida we have so many wasps and mud daubers that will nest virtually anywhere, with open joint I fear it would be big sanctuary immediately. What about a stainless steel screen material covering the entirety of the wall so every open joint is bug proof? Thoughts?
@apscoradiales4 жыл бұрын
put a dense vinyl mesh screen on top of battens - the same kind that window manufacturers use on their operable windows a..k.a "bug screen". If the window screen can keep the bugs out, so will it on the wall too.

I am curious about how the boards are attached in between the T-shaped strips on the end. Are the boards screwed into the wall between the ends? If so, are there furring strips behind the boards to maintain the gap behind the IPE siding? I don't see any evidence of furring strips in between.
@apscoradiales4 жыл бұрын
Look closer in the video; there are wood battens at either end of the ipe board. The metal T trim piece is also attached to the batten, then the ipe is layed and attached over the trim into the batten.

i am seriously considering ipe or similar using this technique, but i have reservations about insects and other items pointed out in other comments. can you reasure me and my builder that i am not creating a disaster.
@apscoradiales4 жыл бұрын
put a vinyl bug screen over the battens (immediately under the ipe boards) - same kind as you see on window bug screens. It will let air though so the wall behind vents, but it will keep the bugs out, just like your windows screens do.

How do you keep moisture getting through the screw holes in the house wrap?
@apscoradiales4 жыл бұрын
friction fit - water practically cannot run through the holes because the battens cover the membrane. You'd have to spray the wall with a very high powered pressure washer for any water to get through.

@bartpsenicnik77437 жыл бұрын
Hello Anushka, I just watched this video and saw your question, I built a deck with Ipe about 18 years ago and stained it, which was a waste of time and money, but what happened was that the stain just weathered away over time( a year or two), and then the Ipe just naturally faded to a nice gray color. After 18 years the Ipe is still nice and smooth and in great shape. Don't worry, your bench will be fine.

Unsustainable. White oak. Black locust. Cedars. Redwoods. Cypress. Maybe larch idk. Damn near any wood siding but ipe is good for the environment. Could just whitewash something and get enhanced infared shielding and the same resistance as ipe. I know you’re looking for that wood look and I just gave several examples but there’s a hell of a lot more rot resistant woods out there that can and do regrow in the US.
