I love board and batten. My dad used to do live edge board and batten. Or I guess it would be what you call reverse board in baton but with live edge pine. Looked really cool. He actually did it on the walls of his "man cave". He has a mixture of different species. He installed poplar and pine and hickory. Very interesting looking setup. And he had the walls covered with antique saws and planters and grain grinders and different things like that. Kind of like a cracker barrel restaurant.

I used to saw a 5/8" x 9" lap siding, using an inch and a half starter strip. It was very popular and went up fast. The yield out of a log was very high making it a good profit item.
@edsmith44143 жыл бұрын
Yep.....I saw a 3/8"-3/4" taped lap siding 8" wide to install with 6" exposure. As you say, LOT of yield out of a log. I saw mine into an 8" wide cant however tall I can get it, then stick a couple small 5/8" plywood shims between the cant bottom and the bed rail.....saw a piece off, remove the shims, saw another piece off (the taper swaps sides with each shim, un-shim). LOT easier/faster and certainly cheaper than using lap siding jig on the market.

This is very helpful as my family is considering building a cabin and we're leaning toward real wood siding. I like all of them! If we narrowed down to the cheaper options (clapboard, B&B, and wavy), I wonder what the pros' thoughts are on long term durability. It seems the horizontal options might be better to allow driving rain to shed off better without penetrating under boards. Is that truly a down side to B&B? Especially after some years pass and allow gaps to open up between the board and batten? Thanks.

I prefer the live edge, but without the bark....which inevitably falls off in time. We use Spring tulip popular when the bark is easily pulled off, leaving a clean wavy edge, sans bark.

Tapered lap siding. Many people buy an expensive jig. Problem is you have to saw cants (I saw mine 8" wide by however tall the log will let me square up), off load the cants (which can be pretty heavy to deal with), load the jig on the mill, then load one cant at a time back in the jig (did I mention they can be heavy ?). Much easier, faster and at almost zero cost is saw the cant, and while STILL on the mill, stick a couple 2"x 2"x 5/8" plywood ''shims" between the cant bottom and the bed rail of the mill. Cock with a peavy to do this. Make a pass with the saw head. I shoot for 3/8" on the thin (what will be the top) side, and a 5/8" shim shoved flush with the bottom edge gives me about 3/4" on the other side (which will be the bottom of the siding). Next pass, remove the shims. Taper runs to the other side. Repeat until you are out of cant. No moving it once you saw it on the mill. NONE of the jigs operate any different....the simply cock and un-cock the cant from side to side. I bought a Woodmizer jig 25 years ago, and the first time I used it and saw what it did, it hung on the wall of my mill shed for 10 years until some guy came along and bought it. It will also saw taper shingles like the first siding in the video. You clamp 6 blocks 6-12" wide 16-24" long in it, and throw a lever to raise/lower the ends of the blocks. Each pass of the saw head makes 6 shingles. Works GREAT for shingles (why this guy was buying it), but it is a TOTAL waste of time and money for siding. I sticker the same as any lumber to dry. 4-6months, you have some beautiful siding. To install, use a 'starter' strip of 1x2 lumber on the bottom, install first pc, I use 6" exposure, lapping each run 2" over the bottom. Watch the "cup" of the board, and try to put the concave side OUT, or the bottom has a tendency to pull away from the course below. I also find back priming with whatever paint or stain is a good idea before installing. Joints I miter at a 45 degree so the joints are covered in case the lumber shrinks a bit after install, it doesn't open a gap. I have thousands of feet of it on barns/sheds/shop around my place, and cut many more thousands for other people. Great stuff !

Have you thought about using maintenance-free Eco Wood Treatment for creating a consistent patina to cedar and other woods rather than leave it to stain in the weather and discolor in the sun? Its a non-toxic powder you mix in water and spray or roller onto the wood. It takes on a weathered look within hours and lasts many, many years.

I always liked board and Batton but Ive never actually seen wavy edge siding like that. It looks nice as well and seems like more coverage for the quantity of wood. OH NO!!! We have a disagreement!!! We do agree that vinyl siding is just stupid! The "house" I currently live in does not even have insulation in the walls. There is a place where there is a crack on the inside wall that lets you see the sun shining through the vinyl siding! Your yard camper is made better than this house! However the aluminum siding on my childhood home built in 1967, still has the same aluminum siding on it. I see no reason for it to ever go bad. It may be true that even if you can get aluminum siding today, it may be thinner and inferior to what was put on our house back then: that would need to be looked at if I wanted a house with siding. Think concrete and brick for me. If I build a new house it will be built to withstand ANYTHING: hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, no flood zone and even limited gun fire! The aircraft hanger and shop would be also built to a similar standard. However watching your videos I was thinking of an old fashioned barn. I had guessed that you could make 24 foot beams! So 24 foot white oak beams and hemlock reverse board and batten on the barn.(that is not the way old fashioned barn siding was put on. However I would not use the barn the same way they did back then, so it needs to be sealed up) We would use Mortise and Tenon Joints for the beams if anyone knows how to do that today. Sorry: the roof would be marine plywood with steel roofing. I would use screws on the siding and roof. no nails in the whole thing and the Mortise and Tenon system does not use anything but wood.
