Pomeranian vs German Spitz Difference - Which one is a better dog breed for you?

i prefer a pom that has some spitz facial qualities as a pet, even though it doesn't qualify to compete. it just looks healthier and more robust to me.

Orignal Pomeranians were simply German Spitz bred in Pomerania (area between Germany and Poland). Always possible other spitz breeds were mixed in but basically, it is a German Spitz. Queen Victoria of England love these dogs. She acquired a couple of dogs she referred to as "toy" Pomeranians. These dogs from Italy were not Pom or German Spitz but another long history dog - Volpino Italiano. The Volpinos were substantially smaller - 9-12 lbs vs Poms of those days that were 20-30 lbs. This started the desire to reduce the Poms down to the very small true toy size. What separates Poms and German Spitz is in fact, the inclusion of Volpino blood lines. You might find find some Klein or Zwerg Spitz with Volpino in as well. Add to this - American Eskimo is another dog with origins of the German Spitz. It was bred for the white coat and there are 3 sized with the miniature and toy sized potentially again having a mix with Volpino not just for size but to help with strengthen the white coat genetic lines. The standard Eskimo at its best days was quite different than the other two sizes and it too may have been mixed with other Spitz dogs (Samoyed etc.) to perpetuate certain features given it is a fairly new breed.

Wow Now Looking at this video Now I think I had a spitz, my pom always looked different and body size was different too. Ppl always use to look at him go wow thats a pom his face too cute and he didnt have those beady blk eyes

"pomeranian" and German Spitz are the same word. Pomerania is a German territory, now part of Poland meaning "along the sea". Learn the geography Charlie

I'd be careful with taking the pom features too far! They often have eye problems and breathing problems when their muzzle becomes too short. It is way over time for offical breeding standards to recognize what is the most healthiest for an animal and not just be oriented to what looks the cutest to humans.
