Finally i found a KZbinr who explained the real difference between pro and pro max very clearly and above all for whom they are. I am going for iphone Pro instead of iphone Pro max because the price difference does not justify that much in real world usage and also ergonomics is a main factor to me as well. I upgraded from the iPhone 6s to the iPhone 12 Pro. I considered the 12 Pro Max. However, ergonomics ruled my choice. The great experience that I have had over the years with the 6s is being echoed in the context of the more advanced 12 Pro tech. I see these phones/cameras as a 4 to 5 year investment and I expect that Apple’s hardware/software combination will hold its performance value over time. Additionally, I own a Nikon D5500 DSLR for hobby photography, and this new iPhone is tempering my interest in buying a mirrorless camera. The video quality and fast focusing, in addition to the low light capabilities, of the iPhone 12 Pro are superb for my hobbiiests’/enthusiasts’ needs. All of my higher quality photography needs are satisfied with the Sigma 17 - 50 mm, F 1:2.8 constant aperture zoom lens and the Tamron 16-300 mm, F 3.5 - 6.3 super zoom lenses paired with my D5500.

A really good review, thank you! I have been watching a lot of reviews about the 12 Pro Max recently and also reviewers that have been shooting in the new Apple Pro Raw format. Only there you can see huge benefits from the larger sensor with so much potential! But I think what Apple did with their standard photo software, they are just applying the software designed for the 12 and 12 Pro on the Pro Max as well and that could be the reason why the larger sensor size does not make a huge difference in the HEIC and JPEG pictures. But this is just my personal assumption. As I will be shooting mostly in Auto-mode, I will choose either the standard 12 or the 12 Pro.

I agree bigger sensor is a disadvantage when we are trying to take picture of close up products, close up. Hard to get all sharp image throughout too.

I also found on my pro max the up close focus to be a bit average , when trying to get a bit of detail on an object I just could not get a good image to my surprise , I pulled out a couple of my old android phones and took the same image and they where sharper. Saying that , in most other circumstances I’m pretty happy with it.

Thank you - excellent video. I currently have an iPhone XS and am considering upgrading to an iPhone 12, but have been struggling withe the choice of which one. I know that I want a 3-camera phone - a quick selection in Photos tells me thatI've used the telephoto lens on the XS for just over 30% of my images, so I don't want t ogive that up - and had been attracted to the longer telephoto on the 12 Pro Max. But you (and other reviewers) are now suggesting that there are caveats with the camera performance on that phone, as well as size/ergonomic issues, so I think I'm now leaning heavily towards the 12 Pro. One more question, if I may: do you feel that 128Gb is sufficient storage? I have 256Gb on my XS, but on'y because there was no 128Gb option - 64Gb was the standard.

Thanks! Definitely get the Pro, in my opinion. That 30% is important, but not as important as the other 70%! How much storage are you using at the moment? Only you can say if that's enough really. I personally find 128 GB plenty, but I don't install a tonne of apps and I use a lot of cloud-based storage too.

CAMERA REVIEW! finally!! macro, telephoto, and lowlight are all interests. it was great to see the performance between the two. ------- i definitely do more closeup shots in day-to-day, and the regular PRO is better with that. tho the PRO MAX is better with telephoto, i mainly only use that in traveling. in which case i may bring my DSLR in the first place. --------- it was also great to see the PRO is better with low light and doesn't necessarily have to use its night mode. --------- and ERGONOMICS i know can be HUGE. even just playing with ipads/ipad minis demonstrated this is MAJOR. (i got the mini. the reg is too dang heavy, and you get worn out with it, not wanting to use it). EXCELLENT REVIEW! thanks a million!

Simple and effective review. I had an issue with S20 ultra for its inability to focus on short distances due to its design. Similarly iPhone 12 pro max has the similar issue as mentioned by the reviewer. Beware of larger sensor size as it has its downside too! As I take lots of macro photography 12 pro will be the best. Your input is very valuable. Also good for online classes for teaching where I need to demonstrate close up views. Looking forward.

Got the 12 pro max, and my god, perfect ! Smooth, zippy, nicely sized for my big hands so it seems normal, screen is bright as ever, I never have to squint in the daylight ..the grip is beautiful, if you’re a little person or have little hands, go with the 12 pro ..but if you’re 6ft plus in height, pro max, you’re welcome !

Finally a great review! No one mentions the minimum focus distance which I think is a big problem for the flagship model iPhone 12 pro max and it is not a question of software but the sensor size . I was thinking of buying an iphone 12 PM but now I am definitely going for the 12 pro.

I had the iPhone 11 Pro Max before I upgraded to the iPhone 12 Pro which I love but decided to order the iPhone 12 Pro Max which I love vs the 12 Pro but the 12 Pro Max does feel different in my hand and I'm able to grip it better vs the iPhone 11 Pro Max which I wasn't able to grip it without having a case on.

Nice job. But you kept saying that the Pro Max didn't focus as closely, due to the larger sensor. I'm confused as to why the larger sensor would be the reason for that, when they have similar optics...

Thank you. The greater minimum focus distance is quite common in these larger sensor phones we've seen in the past couple of years. The larger sensor and pixels is the only difference with the main lens, and combine that with the fact that other, similar phones show the same phenomenon, I think it makes sense to be that!

DaY Star the 12 pro, (not the max). Ergonomics is really important. Makes a huge difference. The added weight doesn’t seem like a lot, but over time it ends up being a huge factor. Also, in day-to-day I think the macro will be more useful as I often take close up photography. The zoom would’ve been great, but I don’t think I’d use it AS much. The regular pro also works better in low light, before having night mode kick in. So it will have better photography on the whole, in low-light situations. 👍

I went for the 12 Pro Max purely to have the bigger battery. With these new iPhone’s having such amazing cameras, I knew I’d be taking more photos and videos with it and therefore I wanted the longer lasting battery. The rest is either a bonus (bigger screen and debatably better camera) or something I will simply put up with (heavy and no one handed use). I am loving my new iPhone 12 Pro Max after using an iPhone 8 for the past couple years now 😊👍🏼

I was juggling between the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max and ended up keeping the 12 Pro. Max is not just wide but also heavier which makes it impossible to comfortably use the phone with one hand especially when typing on the go. I stepped down on the camera quality but I'll take it for the more compact build.

Why is it that in the UK and Australia we pay 💰 more for all iPhones than in the US? This isn’t just a little more, it’s lots... Why isn’t 🍏 looking after dedicated customers equally, right around the Globe? I’d be curious to know if Chinese mainland customers get the devices least expensively-given the lowest possible shipping costs in their case. I just purchased a 12 ProMax 256 GB for $2019Au from 🍎. Yes it is a shame - super expensive in the U.K. (can't speak to Aus, personally). People are willing to pay it though, so I can understand why they do it. I would make a comparison video like that, but I don't feel as though i'm best placed to speak about all of these other areas across the globe - i'd need to be fully researched and keep up to date with all of these countries. I think my only valid comments would be on the fact that places like the U.K. have to pay more (like you mentioned) - and I already have made this point in previous videos. I feel like most people wouldn't want to hear me drone on about it! I actually raised the point that I could technically fly to another country to buy the iPhone for less than it cost in the U.K.! I'm sure someone with more time will make a good video on this though!

I ended up rebuying the 12 max and have been using it for a month. Fantastic video and cameras, screen tones don’t matter anymore. Love the camera, hate iPhone clock alarm, love how fast 5g is, wouldn’t want a smaller ph now.

@@datway88 no I had True Tone turned off and night mode, there is no doubt the iPhone screens are warm toned but it just doesn’t matter once you have made the switch and adjust to it

you say in the vid the pro max has 2.5 optical zoom but on apples site it says 5 time optical zoom am I missing something

No, it’s just Apple’s marketing team trying to trick you this year. What they mean by 5x is the entire zoom range (from ultra wide, through to telephoto). Ultra wide is 0.5 zoom. 0.5 x 5 = 2.5. So it’s 2.5x on the telephoto, but 5x zoom “range”. The Pro is “4x” since 0.5 x 4 = 2. And it has 2x optical on it’s Tele lens. It’s really not cool from Apple to be honest. Because the Pro, for example, is exactly the same in terms of range as every other telephoto lens iPhone. But this year, they decided to market it as the “range” as opposed to just the tele lens. The bigger numbers make it sound more impressive!

I do appreciate iPhones and with their everything working just right. What I can't let go of in my head is the number on the battery. 3687mAh on a 6.7 inch smartphone 🙄 I wonder what apple put in the device to take up all the battery space that others haven't - that which comes as a benefit to the user.

You're right. As great as the battery optimisation is, I don't see why they couldn't put a much bigger battery in the phone. Imagine the 12 Pro Max with a 5000 mAh battery...

Let’s be honest...the main reason for the max for most people is the bigger battery and bigger screen....photos for 95% of the time are the same especially viewing on the phone.

My iphone12 pro camera photo cant focus on close subject using 1x. Need to use the 0.5x and zoom in a bit to snap a photo. Is anyone have this issue?

Oh that’s just the Face ID scanner trying to scan my face. All Face ID iPhones do this (you can’t see it in real life, it’s just picked up by my camera)
