Yes, waiting a few years between upgrades means you really enjoy the benefits of the extra cost. I'd like to wait 5 years between upgrades but the longest I have been able to hold out is 3 years - 6 Plus to XS was a great upgrade, but XS to 12 - not so sure!

Another thing to consider is that the 12 Pro is more future proof thanks to the additional ram. The ~10% price difference pays off over time by giving you a smoother running phone for longer. That’s especially important to consider since the true potential of the a14 is yet to be realized.

Yeah, the 6GB of RAM is a huge deal. I haven’t had a single app reload on me yet. It’s joyous! To me it’s the biggest reason alone to upgrade this year and I know most won’t even realize or care but 4GB of RAM is no longer enough on iOS.

honestly wanted to go for the pro. In India, the prices are just way too much. 12 256gb was 95k here which is $1270 and pro 256gb was $1720 which is 1.3 lakh rupees. I would’ve gone for the pro if the difference was $150-200 but just can’t get myself to spend 1.3L Rupees on it. I had to settle for 12 for now though i really wanted the pro. Loving the 12 nonetheless.

You are fortunate in the US by having such a small price difference between the 2 models. In Europe it is much much higher, so I went for the 12, and am pretty happy with it.

I got the iPhone 12. And for the HDR Dolby Vision, dude it's so GOOD! I'm uploading NIGHT HDR videos and even with 30fps, the quality is just excellent. Here in Germany the difference 12 vs 12 pro was 200€ @128GB. I would say if someone wants to spend more... should go for the 12 pro max.

The reason I prefer the 12 more is not only being $200 cheaper but it's also 25g lighter. The X/XS/XR/11/11 Pro/12 Pro are all generally heavy. And T-Mobile has many trade-in offers for it.

That’s what I’ve been saying all along. Most people need 128GB storage anyway, and $120 extra buys you a lot more features with the Pro. The telephoto camera and the extra 2GB RAM alone are worth the price difference. Having a steel frame, LIDAR, 60 hz Dolby HDR, night mode portrait, and ProRAW format are icing on the cake.

Funny thou, I ran into a same conclusion before buying a phone... it’s was obvious to me that 12 pro or 12 pro max is a way to go. I remember some speculated in comments that even 11 pro is a better buy than 12 pro... now my 12 Pro has the best cellular reception ever and I thought my carrier just suck... lots of thoughts to think about it. Still more than happy with my XS Max. I bought it renewed when it was already a year old for around £500. I’ve since had the battery replaced by Apple. Should be fine for another year or two at least. I look at the rumoured specs of the 13 and apart from slightly better photos and video, 120hz (I own an iPad Pro and it’s an overrated feature) it doesn’t do anything the XS can do perfectly well. By all means go ahead and strive for the newest shiniest thing but as I’ve grown a little older I’m much less bothered about status symbols. It either offers a decent cost to benefit ratio or it doesn’t. I’ll keep my XS Max around until a feature comes along I want that it doesn’t have.

I bought the 12 after getting rid of the 11 pro and I must say I love it! iPhone 5s was one of the best designs ever and the black and slate was my personal fave colour, the black 12 defo looks the part

The whole LIDAR focusing in the dark and taking portraits in the dark reminds me of the whole full frame vs crop frame race a few years back in DSLRs. It’s never as big of a deal as it is made out to be, and taking pics in such crappy light tends to give you pics you won’t really hang onto anyway lol (disclaimer I own a full frame from back then, and the picture quality is still awesome to this day) That being said, I went with a 128gb 12 this year because it’s way lighter in the hand, I just don’t use the zoom that often, I don’t shoot much video on my phone, and I’m an iPhone user from way back and constantly close apps anyway so 6 vs 4 in the RAM isn’t noticeable.

Night mode fixes the issue of taking pics in dark lighting. So combine great LIDAR autofocus in the dark and night mode and you end up with excellent night time photos.

I urge most people considering to take an honest look at their camera roll from the last 6 months and see what they're really taking photos of. If you need to convince yourself you're going to start taking more photos to justify the upgrade it's probably a bad decision.

For me, I just want a smaller phone so I was planning to get the 12 Mini. My 10S doesn’t have LiDar but it does have the 2x zoom so that is one thing I am a little worried about missing. The last thing is about storage space. I keep hearing 128GB is the sweet spot but my phone has 256GB and after two years I’m using 210GB. 90 of that is used on photos so maybe I need to use more cloud or edit myself better but the OS/Other category is also using 30. Am I doing something wrong bc it seems like 128 could get chewed up right quick.

Weight is a big one for me. I don't like the heavy weight all the time. However, I was curious about the night time photos, now, I don't take night time portraits really, so that doesn't bother me (and actually I could share a night time portrait I took on the 12 and I think you might be quite surprised how it looks). I did wonder if the Lidar would help with astrophotography, but I haven't seen any one say that it would, plus I phoned Apple and asked and the fellow said that it most likely would not, it would just help with focusing on a subject. The ram...that is a bit of an issue as I have noticed certain times where the 12 freezes... The telephoto, normally that would push me towards it, but because of the weight of the 12 and so far I have been super happy with it, I think I will stay with the 12 and not upgrade to the 12 pro.

@@baotrankhuu1872 yes you can. If you use a bunch of apps and switch between them it’s noticeable. Also if you use Lirum Info for RAM monitoring, you’d see a huge difference

........ how does a Lidar sensor help with night shots? The Lidar is only really used for distance. Meaning it can focus better automatically.. as for shadows and shading the Lidar should have zero impact. Maybe I misunderstood you and missed you covering that

Probably what caused the Geekbench score to be lower is that the non pro has less ram and also the pro has some copper under the board so heat dissipation is a little better with it. Best way to tell if thermals are limiting the speed is to run the Geekbench with the phone face down in the freezer or on top of something cold and also have it plugged in and at 100% battery
