To be honest the so called "Dynamic Island“ is an impressive testament that Apple can easily pitch a well polished turd and troll their users by calling it with a fancy name while they gasp in excitement "innovation". You can do that stuff with a (removable) widget and notifications without needing an... entire island occupying the screen making the already humongous pill shaped hole ridiculous in size.

Dynamic island is clearly the most apple thing they could do, it's very good, I thought that it was a simple pill, but in fact there was a little part of it which was just black, so the green led for camera use could be there. Genius. They transformed an annoying notch to a useful taskbar.

The fact that the FaceID animation will grow out of the Dynamic Island - and thus draw your eyes to where the camera actually is - just feels so nice! Surprise and delight. They nailed the UI/UX on this!

The base model iPhone 13 Pro when it first came out last year at launch cost 1149€ and now the same base model of the iPhone 14 Pro cost 1299€. Also all Apple accessories cost 4-15€ more. Even the iPhone 13/Pro cases. (Silicon case: used to cost 55€, now it cost 59€. MagSafe battery pack: used to cost 109€, now it costs 119€.) Same with the whole AirPod Lineup (AirPods 2nd Gen to AirPods Max all at least 10€ more expensive) and all of the other products. It is literally cheaper to fly the us to a state with a low sales tax from Europe and get it there.

So I’ve had my iPhone 7 for like 5 years now lol. (Surprisingly no scratches or cracks!) I’ve decided to finally upgrade this month. Originally, I was going to get the 13, but when I saw the dynamic island I decided to go with the iPhone 14 pro. I’m so excited! Everyone keeps saying that there aren’t major differences between the 13 & 14, but when you have an iPhone 7 that doesn’t even have portrait mode this is a huge upgrade 😂

As someone who uses the selfie cam a lot I’m concerned that I’ll need to clean my screen every time before I use the camera due to all the fingerprints from interacting with the dynamic island. Other than that, this feature is so Apple and I love it. Turned what could have been a negative into a major positive.

I loved the v10 with that double screen which led me survive an entire year during 2016 in college without a laptop. The main screen was enormous, and as lg’s QSlide apps feature can draw applets over other apps like a window, it made the phone very dependable for serious work, especially things like calculator. It was my only device during my first year at college - all assignments, done all video editing, made reports, PPTs, designs with just that phone as I didn’t have a laptop. It was a bummer when they discontinued it after v20, I now have an iPhone 13 but it’s nowhere near how v10 used to be in fluid multitasking on a mobile device. The second screen used to fluidly sort and show the most important recent apps/ functions I needed so that I can switch back and forth, more like a companion, and if needed there was always QSlide apps to do some quick jotting or calculation without getting out of the current screen (online tutorial, editing a spreadsheet etc.). It was not like the gimmicky ‘smart’ features of today - it was actually useful during serious work! I still miss the sense of ‘companionship’ which those fluid features used to give me to get my work done in the v10.

Long time Apple user here, I think the absence of Physical SIM is what will break the camel’s back for me. Not because I don’t like it, I like the technology a lot, but I’m an international traveler and I want to be able to swap/switch physical sims with ease. This makes sense for US (maybe!! Cuz I’ve had my fair share of troubles with US eSIMs too), but for international this is going to be an absolute no-go; and I’d hate to carry another phone. Also, what about sudden accidental damage, Now I can’t put my physical sim into my backup phone instantly. This is so unfortunate.

So, my theory is that the pill camera over however many years will end up as under display cameras, or they may make the pill smaller for screen to body ratio and become too small for dynamic island (lol) to function. But I think this maybe be too good a feature to lose in future models so - they have a larger, touch bar like design combined with dynamic island UI and features at the bottom of the screen and make the screen slightly taller 6.8-6.9 inch. Lets see how that ages edit: will we all not get sick of reaching to the top of the screen as well after a while?

the idea of the dynamic island is actually pretty cool. But by touching a lot nearby the camera you will touch the camera itself. Just look on the video 8:42 when the dude touches he leaves a big finger print. I mean it s not that big of a deal and you can quickly clean it. But I still think that it is unpracticable and you will always get dirty cam. But the idea is really great!

Lol The pin hole cutout on my 6 pro doesn't show up 99% of the time as it sits in the notification bar, I usually for get its there. And the phone is wider than 16:9 so videos don't touch it either. I feel like the dynamic island hole would be more obtrusive than anything.

The Dynamic Island feels like what some makers do with their camera bumps: the cutout is going to be there, it is going to be talked about, so lets embrace it and make the best we can do with it. Its a very good utility, very well executed from the looks of it, the animations are smooth and helps make the cutout look more useful than it would if it was just for the camera and sensors. This is such a useless fucking complaint. You can "accidentally touch" literally anything on the fucking phone. It's also at the most furthest point away from your hands, the chances of that are already extremely slim. Smudges also already exist on that part of the screen anyway if you are using the control centre. This concern adds absolutely no additional value to any discussion currently going on with mobile device design at the moment. These issues already exist and/or rarely occur as it is.

Another huge hit caused by esim is the ability to move your sim to another phone in a hurry if your phone is damaged. As someone who deals with customers woth damaged phones daily, being able to pop out a sim and put it in a test phone to receive a 2fa code is essential sometimes. And being able to find the imei and check the water damage indicators from the sim tray is very important too. This will cause more problems than it would solve.

I’m sure that Apple know about that and I’m sure that Apple have another/better way to find the IMEI and check for water damage on an iPhone. If they get rid of the SIM tray then, it means that they already have a way to work around the problems you’re thinking of. If you get water damage and have to quickly switch from your iPhone to an Android (which would need a SIM) then, I don’t know about that. Maybe you will have to quickly drive to your phone’s carrier and quickly buy a SIM card.

Accidental touches may end up opening another app or closing the game you're playing which will be really annoying . Wasn't a problem before because the notch wasn't touch sensitive . That’s not really the point of phones anymore. It’s more like cars these days. If you own a ‘22 Camry, are you gonna buy a ‘23? No, that’s crazy. It’s the same with phones. It’s all the little improvements over the years that make people happy when they upgrade after 5 years or whatever

My 12 Pro Max needs an upgrade. My screen was defective from the factory, and by the time I went to go get it fixed, I actually had dropped the phone and cracked the screen in the corner. Apple wouldn't cover it because I didn't have Apple Care. So the screen just started acting up even more. I went back to Android (I'm actually really liking the Pixel 6 Pro). When the 14 Pro Max comes out, I'll get that.

I have the 12 Pro Max and I think it’s time I upgrade. Not sure I can wait another year for a new phone! Plus I do a lot of nature photography, so I’m excited for a camera upgrade.

I had the iPhone 7 + for 5 years and it was easily the best phone for me over those years and I had no reason to upgrade till last year when my phone broke and the battery life was like 40% of what it used to be. So great to see the plus phone come back, the size of the phone yields a better experience and you don’t have to spend a ton like the pro model.

I still have my iPhone 7 (typing on it right now) for 5 years at this point. Battery life is my biggest issue now.

Have you guys tried replacing the battery at an Apple Store? I use my iPhone 8 for basic tasks (audible, KZbin, social media, Duolingo, phone calls, Txt messages etc) and lasts about 8-9 hours. Not has much as the new phones now but it gets through my needs before I head home. Just looked at my battery health. It lasts 10 hours.

I still use my iPhone 7. I got it in 2018, and the battery life is at 84%. I hope on using it for as long as I can, so if the battery is not that good I’ll get it replaced and not get a new phone just because of that

Really loving how iOS is more functional than ever, especially having those functions around the features and design! Like finally having an always on display and that useful Dynamic Island! Almost as functional as Android! USB type-C next year and I'm going to buy my first iPhone!

Yea almost as good as an android. Although my galaxy s8 has always had always on display. Plus the fact that it has the same chip as the iphone 13. The 14 is cool but other than the camera and island I just dont see that much of a difference.

This is next level of creating a new problem and then attempt to solve it; I'm saying this while using the 13PM (only reason is the battery) Action mode and the front camera is pretty cool though, gotta give Apple props for that

@@kb8102 I wouldn't say they created a problem, they just did what they had to do for their FaceID system. Took them long enough to change it but, honestly, I forget about the notch when using the iPhone.

It’s funny, when I first heard about this new pill cutout, I was against it. Because I thought it just intruded into the screen more than the notch. Then Apple comes along, and makes a camera cutout a feature of how the phone’s software works. - I really like it.

I don't understand how it could intrude more. If they are gonna introduce it,then they surely won't go below the notch level, otherwise what's the point. And the notch in itself looks so outdated,so it's good that iphones are catching up to cutouts.

@@vasudev8421 I don't see how the cutout is better than a notch. The top few pixels are unusable anyway and this way the cutout is MORE visible than a notch would be. Also the "dynamic island" would work just as well with a notch, expanding and shrinking it. The cutout is just something Android people wanted because that's how most of the manufacturers have dealt with placing the camera, but it's not actually better or more usable in any way.

I love the mini and it is a shame because I could’ve been tempted to go from 12 mini up to a 14 mini, but I can appreciate that an annual refresh cycle doesn’t make sense when sales aren’t justifying that. The best I can hope for is the next SE is just the iPhone 13 mini with a newer chip in it, but I acknowledge that’s probably very unlikely! Just something a bit smaller/narrower than the regular 14 would be nice 👍

me too, held onto my original SE until the 12 mini came out; that was like 5 or 6 generations later (basically skipping the entire "round edge" era) and it still worked fine i might have to do the minor upgrade to the 13 mini then hang onto _that_ until they maybe relent and come out with a "16 mini" or something small phones for life!

Totally agree. I’m still on an 8 and it’s like these phones just keep getting larger and larger. I want a nice bright screen but I’m not watching movies on this thing.
