Is your iPhone 15 not working with your external USB-C SSD? The problem is an issue with the iPhone 15 not seeing any NVME Gen4 SSD in any USB C to NVME enclosure or any combination of NVME Gen4 M.2 SSD or NVME Gen3 M.2 SSD in a USB4 to NVME enclosure or Thunderbolt 4/USB4 to NVME enclosure.
This issue persists regardless of using either the APFS or ExFAT formats and the size of the NVME SSD doesn't make a difference, be that 1TB, 2TB or 4TB NVME Gen4 M.2 SSD.
Is this a power problem, PCIe bandwidth problem or simply another unneccesary restriction to yet another Apple product by a company know for such things on other devices of theirs?

Helpful - I commented on one of your other videos (samsung v iPhone disk speed). I think maybe power is a risk. If the drive doesn't receive enough power, at best transfer speeds will slow. At worst, the transferred files will be corrupted - the risk there is that with standard copy to move files (vs say rsync with checksum) is that the integrity of the files is not checked, so a user may not notice their files are corrupt until it's too late. Terrible for backups - not so bad for scratch disks / temporary use. I couldn't find in the phone specs how much power they (Samsung / iPhone) can put out.

Your video has been helpful. I bought a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 SSD 2tb (T-Force M200) and formatted it to APFS on my Mac only to discover my iPhone 15 pro couldn't see it. Watched this video and I'm like... ok. No good. Then Contacted the company and they said try a dongle. So I put apple's USB C - USB A adapter on and connected it, and magically, now the drive works. So, maybe that is something to try with your non functioning results. It may likely still not function, or maybe it will start working magically. God Bless.

This video is definitely misleading. Nothing is wrong with the iPhone’s storage. Apple stated that the new USB C iPhone 15 Pro models, they can handle external storage of certain specs and will not go above a certain power draw. How much is it? apple’s support page says, no more than 4.5 watts. When a gen 4 NVMe is idle, its power draw can range between .05 to .58 watts. And when it’s reading/writing, it can be above 6 watts. Newer gen NVMe SSDs typically consume more power than older generation NVMEe SSD’S. I don’t see the reason to sensationalize this. This video is almost 40 minutes. Why didn’t you connect the iPhone to a USB-C hub, plug in the same gen 4 ssd to the hub and the give the hub power through a USB-C pd port and see if the gen 4 ssd shows up in the Files app. I’m certain that since the hub would get power and also charge the phone, the phone will read the SSD as it won’t have to expel power to read the drive. Why not try that?

I also have the problem that none of my 3 SSDs (a Gen4, a SanDisk 2TB and a LaCie 2TB) are recognized by the iPhone15Pro. Also doesn't work if I connect with 2 different hubs (with additional power).

Idk it’s pro iPhone, it’s a grand, and it’s encouraged to record pro res 4k 60 fps. And I see pro buying enclosures so they can upgrade them in the future especially when their pro iPad and pro mac work with them flawlessly. It’s seems like a stupid limitation to make me upgrade next year when their other devices work just fine.

This power theory doesn’t really hold up since android devices have no problem hosting my usb4 enclosure but the iPhone does. Also you can use an old usb2.0 cable and it will work with every device except the iPhone and usb2.0 specs are only 2.5w. It must be a firmware issue.

Hi. Peter. I'm glad the video was useful 👍 Yes, it's a pity that there's issues with Gen4. I'm the same as you, my main externals use Gen4. I would have recommended the P5 and Sabrent for a good daily external but it looks like Crucial don't do the P5 anymore. As soon as I find something that's readerly available and tested it, I'll do a video. Cheers, Dave.

@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 9 ай бұрын
Hi, Tristan. I have some more videos coming up which show that the Phone, as fast and as good as it is, simply will not reach the full speed of its USB C bus. I’m now starting to suspect that its internal storage on its SoC may not be the same type used as what’s on the SoCs for the iPad Pro and Macs. Basically, I think the internal storage speed is the bottleneck. So, because the phone will never read/write at the full speed, it does mean that more expensive and faster drives are maybe a bit wasted on it. Because of that, the trade off in using a good basic USB C drive would probably make more sense, or at least better financial sense. So because of that, yes, the Sabrent enclosure is a very practical option. I’m still testing to see what is a good recommendation for an SSD to pair with the Sabrent. The P5 is good but it is no longer a current product in the Crucial range, so wouldn’t be a good recommendation. I may try a P3 Plus and see how that it. Whatever I end up with as the recommendation, it won’t be the fastest possible, for the reasons I’ve just explained but it will be good as far as general speeds are concerned and will be good value for money. Keep an eye on my video titles, they are usually very descriptive of what the video is about, and as soon as I’ve worked out the best combination, you’ll see it in the titles. Just bear in mind, my channel isn’t about phones or doing speed tests, I’m only doing these videos because the iPhone is popular at the moment and I’m obviously trying to get more views and more income. I generally cover tech in a wider sense, although, I have gravitated to a lot of Apple and Mac stuff. My next bunch of videos are likely to be boring videos about cases, screen protectors etc. So maybe ignore those ones and just watch the boring tech ones 😆 Cheers, Dave.

In my mind that alone may take less power. I went to the Apple Store and hooked it up and it worked. I didn’t try writing but it played every 4k60 file I had on there. About a minute’s worth. Have you tried sense 17.4.1~ update? Ik with updates in the past with Apple things change with expansion compatibility. Anyways thanks.

I’d love to see this test again but with a watt meter in between. It’d be very interesting. I’m also wondering if an SSD draws less than 4.5 watts at “idle” and more when under load could this damage the SSD or corrupt files? I know cutting power when a storage device is transferring is not a good idea so.. 🤔

Can you explain this. I have an iPhone 15 pro. I also have a sunbow 1tb ssd. I also have a usbC 7 in 1 hub. The ssd can be seen on iPhone using its own supplied cable through an old usb to usbc adapter also supplied with the ssd. It can’t be seen using a 0.5m 20gb usbC 3.2 c to c cable. It also can’t be seen using a 40gb straight usbC to c straight connector. However, both the lead and connector allow the ssd to be seen if I plug them into the 7in1 hub with a power cable in it. So I can connect the hub to power (old usb to usbC cable). Then plug in ssd on cable or connector at the same time as having a sd card in the hub and I can read them both on iPhone. So why should it work through the hub but not connected directly?

I tested with 2 SSDs. One Samsung Evo 970 Plus 500 Gb and a Kingston KC2500 1 Tb. the Kingston will never work no matter if I format it as APFS or ExFAT, GUID, MBR or Apple Filetable. The Samsung connected to my iphone once as ExFAT, MBR but I can't get it to connect again.

Hi. Thank you for your comment 👍 Although the examples in this video are very obvious ones, which I only used because they were 100% repeatable, I’ve also had the same inconsistencies that you’ve had with other drives of my mine. I’ve also had drives being picked up and then lost and also different results with formatting, just as you have. I didn’t show these examples as they weren’t 100% reproducible. Although the examples in this video would seem to suggest PCIe restrictions and maybe power restrictions. Your experience, along with the others of mine that are similar, I would guess are down to power delivery problems. The only problem is that it’s very difficult to give an absolute reason why this is happening but between my experiences, your experiences and the experiences that others have reported on my other videos about issues with external storage. It is very safe to say that there is definitely a problem and I think it would be fair to suggest that one of those problems does look like power delivery issues. I’ve actually got more videos to do with more inconsistencies and just hope that more people wake up to these problems. Again, thank you for your comment and I’m sorry that I can’t offer you anything concrete as to what is the problem. Actually, try this if you can. If you connect one of your problematic drive setups to a powered USB C or Thunderbolt dock and hub and then connect the dock/hub to your phone, I think you’ll find that the phone will have no problems seeing the drive. This works for me with every drive setup that is problematic being connected direct, again, suggesting a power delivery issue. Cheers, Dave.

@@DavidHarry I totally agree, I have tried various hard drives and SSD through a PD USB-C hub and that gives more consistent and reliable results. Also my ipad pro can deliver power for all variants and does not suffer from the same restrictions. I haven't tried any Gen 4 SSDs though but this is definately a question of power delivery.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 9 ай бұрын
@@bunkermagnus Hi, Magnus. I forgot to say but I too don't have these issues with my iPad Pros , M1 or M2. However, these iPads use Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt delivers 15w as a minimum (from what I can remember). So yes, it really does look like a problem of power delivery. This is really bad as Apple have been pushing this whole recording ProRes to an external SSD. And let's face it, most people who are likely to be using ProRes on an external drive are likely to be people who are already doing video production, who will inevitably be using good, fast SSDs for their workflows and probably many using enclosures with Gen4 NVMe SSDs in them and also Thunderbolt drives. I really can't see casual users wanting to record externally using ProRes. This is why I think Apple have screwed up so big with this. What they should really have done was to put Thunderbolt 4 on all of these new iPhones, or at the least TB4 on the Pro/Pro Max and 10Gb/s USB C on the 15 and Plus if they needed the market segregation (but I think all the iPhones in the same range should have the same interface secs). With TB4, it would have been fully USB4 compatible and fully backward compatible with all USB standards via the C port. I'll do a video soon showing the difference between the iPad Pro and iPhone 15 with this drive issue. While I have a lot of negative things to say about this iPhone, it really is a great phone. Although, I may see it differently than others, as my previous phones have been SEs and Minis, so the jump to this one has been significant for me. Cheers, Dave.

Hi, Rod. Depending on the revision of your Sandisk drive, as some of these have been upgraded over time. I suspect that it may be a power delivery issue with the iPhone. I think some of the faster Sandisk drives use NVME SSDs within the enclosure and it may be this that the phone is having problems with. There may also be a PCIe issue as well, although I can’t say for sure. One thing that is for sure though, is that more and more people are noticing these problems. Thank you for comment, it’s not only very helpful to me but I’m sure it will be extremely helpful to others 👍 Sorry I can’t be of any help. Cheers, Dave.

Hi, Andy. There is every possibility of that. However, the real question that goes begging here, is why Apple didn't just put Thunderbolt 4 on ALL the new iPhones. Considering that TB4/USB4 is totally compatible with all earlier USB formats, it would have made more sense. The iPad Pros have this and some of them are cheaper than the iPhone 15s and way cheaper than the Pro Max. I guess that next year the 16 Pro and Pro Max will get TB4/USB4 and the standard 16 and 16 Plus will get 10Gb/s USB C. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that this phone is actually already capable of TB4/USB4 and Apple just disable it. Cheers, Dave.

Yeah, well it’s still a good first step. A plethora of products work with iPhone’s usb port. I like the idea of thunderbolt, but thunderbolt requires at least 7.5 W from the port, up to 15W if it is called thunderbolt 4. iPhone battery will diminish quite rapidly if supplying 15W to a device. Plus with thunderbolt, Apple will have to implement PCIe tunneling. Not sure if it’s worth it on a Phone.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 9 ай бұрын
@@j340_official Each to their own but I disagree. Given that Apple are promoting the use of ProRes recording, which will inevitably need saving to an external SSD for speed, they should simply have put TB4/USB4 on all the phones. Battery drain wouldn’t be an issue, as anyone using TB4 would understand this as a trade off and anyone using typical USB C devices wouldn’t even notice. Plus, the implementation of USB on the iPhone isn’t very good. It’s not working well with many peripherals that even the iPad Mini with its “older” 5Gb/s USB works with. Given that the iPad Pro has TB4/USB4 and it’s cheaper, again, it just stinks of Apple doing slow rollouts so that they can hold back features to the following year. I bet the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max get TB4 and the 16 and 16 Plus get 10Gb/s USB. The fact that they restricted the 15 and 15 Plus to 480Mb/s just proves Apple’s strategy, which is something you clearly see in other ranges of theirs and something they have form for.

@@DavidHarry There is no phone with thunderbolt! I think it is a decent trade off if a phone tops out at 10 Gbps. Many other mobile phones from Samsung and others top out at 5 Gb/s. Part of why the USB4 spec doesn’t require PCIe tunneling is because some of the mobile manufacturer folks who want to use a USB4 port don’t want to add the extra cost/complexity/power to implement and support PCIe tunneling. For all we know, implementing a thunderbolt controller, PCIe, and supplying up to 15W to a power hungry device might cause overheating. Some thunderbolt devices run hot! All I think Apple needs to do is increase the iPhone’s output wattage from 4-4.5W max to 7.5W and that will support the majority of USB-c devices that people want to use with iPhone. Thunderbolt would be nice on a phone, but unless Apple implements a better cooling solution, I just don’t see thunderbolt coming to the iPhone any time soon. But I am open to being pleasantly surprised.

Hi. The problem is power. When the combination of an enclosure and SSD require more power than the iPhone can supply, it won’t see the SSD. This is why your cheap SSD works and not your Samsung. @@DavidHarry Thanks for responding. My hunch is that has to do with a power delivery problem. The Crucial P3 ended up working somehow, but it resulted in really choppy ProRes videos. I'm guessing it was because of the lack of DRAM in the SSD since it uses HMB, therefore, would have terrible write performance. I swapped to an Intel 670P (Gen3) with DRAM and it never detects despite me trying to format into exFAT and APFS. The only way I was able to get this drive to be detected was to plug both my iPhone and SSD into my TB3 dock, which still led to the choppy video ProRes problems. I've also tried all kinds of USB cables too. This is really frustrating to deal with.

@@JohnnyT1994 Yes, there’s some really odd and frustrating stuff going on. The only guaranteed way that I have found so far is to use an “off the shelf” drive like the T7, which are designed to be low power. Or, use a very bog standard USB C enclosure to either SATA or NVMe and use very basic Gen3 NVMe SSDs or SATA SSDs. As soon as you use a Gen4 NVMe SSDs you can’t guarantee anything and using a USB4 or Thunderbolt4/USB4 enclosures, almost always ends with problems. I’ve just done a video showing that using a powered hub or dock is the only way to use certain drives but even then Thunderbolt4 hubs that support USB4 can still be an issue. I’ll have that video up soon. I’ve also found a good, low price and fast option, using the Sabrent enclosure and a Samsung 980. This can do between 850-900MBs for read and write with a large 72GB file, I’ll do a video soon. There’s probably also something with DRAM that gets in the way as well, as you’ve said. Certain combinations that I’ve tried didn’t work with DRAM SSDs, this is maybe why the 980 works. I’m not too sure but I think HMB can also be an issue, as I’m not sure portable OSs like iOS, are able to assign host RAM as a buffer, so maybe HMB SSDs don’t perform as well but do seem to work. I’ll have to look into that one a bit more. Cheers, Dave.

USB 4 is backwards compatible, all of those enclosures default to usb 3.2 when the device uses that. So just add a dongle and add power It is twice as fast Also keep in mind there are ZERO SSD external options that have a decent size SLC cache. It must be the chipset and not a power thing.

Hi, Adrian. Yes, it’s a real pain. I have now done many more tests and can confirm that it is a power issue, not chipset. Apple could resolve this issue if they wanted. All they would have to do is a firmware update with one of this iOS updates, that allows the USB C port to send more current/power. Given that the iPad Mini 6, which is older, has an older and less powerful SoC and has an older USB C port and implementation, can do this. There is absolutely no reason why the iPhone can’t. What’s more. Apple should have just put Thunderbolt 4 on the phone, as they do with the more recent iPad Pro. TB4 by design has more standard power delivery compared to USB’s standard power delivery. Plus this port could have been TB4 and USB 4 compatible, so the best of all worlds. Unfortunately and while this is generally a great phone. It’s just Apple being Apple. Cheers, Dave.

There is a way to solve all these problems! I personally tested it! Connect a USB C hub with power delivery port to the iPhone. Connect a power bank to this port. From this moment the power bank powers the iPhone and all the peripherals that will be connected to it, including SSDs. Since there are no more power problems ALL SSDs work perfectly!

Actually it IS the Cable. I just used my usb-c to usb-c cable that came with my iPhone 15 max pro, the cable feels like it is made of cloth. Works perfectly with my 4TB Sandisk Extreme.

it’s not the cable, it’s the power and the phone can’t send enough for certain SSDs.

Hm. Well in the vernacular it todays youth which allows for only two extreme states of existence , the title of this video is dog shite. You’re using the iPhone 15 Pro Max, not the 15. And it’s not USB C that isn’t working (that is a physical connection specification) but rather it seems like USB 4 (the signaling specification) may not be supported. The iPhone is specified to use USB 3.2 Gen 2. Can the enclosures not switch to USB 3.2 standard or are they all maybe locked in USB 4? I’d suggest fixing the title to be correct lest click bait was the intent.

Using the same vernacular by those who are typically and woefully technically inept, you are talking total dog shite. The title is in reference to the range as they all have the same problems, see my other videos. Plus, your understanding of USB4 and its total backwards compatibility with all preceding USB standards, is total dog shite. Cheers, Dave.

@@colors5108 Hi. Thank you for your comment 👍 Yes, the conclusion was said immediately for those who don't need all the explaining. It's quite a balance making KZbin videos about anything technical. Short videos don't explain enough for those who need more detail and long videos are too long for those who already know a lot. This is why I try to sum the conclusion at the beginning, as you fully understand. Also, many viewers don't fully understand all the technical points, so more detail goes a long way to help understand what's going on. Again, thank you for your comment 👍 Cheers, Dave.
