iPhone 15 Pro Max Prores Log - My First Test Footage

Just got the phone today, took it out and whipped up this quick test to see if iPhone finally got rid of the oversharpened look. And you know what? I think they did it! Shot in ProRes to Crucial X10 2TB external SSD. I recommend watching on a laptop or TV, not a phone.

Finally, iPhone is moving in the right direction! Not over sharpened. Skin tones look much more natural. The only glaring fault I see is the aggressive IBIS shake (and there is no way this is from Brandon). Im interested in this phone!

Kinda mind blowing this footage is from a phone! This is the first time I couldn't tell that the footage was shot on an iPhone based on analyzing the frame and being like "Ya, footage looks pretty good, but it's still obvious it's an iPhone".. This time it was different, the footage looked like it was shot on an actual camera. There was almost no video noise in the shadows, the low light was good, colors are really nice, and the shallow depth at 10 seconds looked really good too! I did notice a bit of weirdness happening in the trees at 18 seconds, but it was so much better than what iPhone normally gives you. Really impressed! Thanks for sharing, I might have to upgrade! haha

Apple finally is giving us unsharpened (or at least less-sharpened) video in the ProRes Log mode. The lack of sharpening makes all the difference. Only downside is the files are freaking huge.

I guess everyone is excited to have log... I'd rather have a system like RED has were you get a nice image without any post work but still have the option of going back to the raw files

@@VincentPascoe The files are around 1 GB per 10 seconds-ish. And since most people using this will record straight to an external card reader or SSD (which is something new that's possible on the 15 Pro Max), the size of your iPhone doesn't necessarily matter.

Hey Brandon! First of all another banger! second, did you use a gimbal? Because the sky looks good if this was just handheld. I noticed without gimbal when I film the sky while walking the image tends to fall apart from the digital stabilization. You killed it again!!

I used my slog3 LUT because there is no official Apple Log LUT. But some other KZbinrs have been making their own LUTs for Apple Log.

If I was just shooting wide angle, GoPro would be more durable and cheaper. for shots of people, iPhone is better because of the 1x lens.

Could you see if there’s a solution for using a usb c device for audio (like the dji mic) at the same time as recording log to external ssd… Perhaps with a split cable? This is the only flaw I see so far for content creators using it more regularly if they have to record audio separately and match in post. If this is possible and some 3rd parties made some decent cases/rig set ups, this could be amazing for content creators that want to use their phone for everything from filming to posting.

I don’t know, but you could use post sync as a stopgap solution for now. Record internally on Rode or DJI, then sync waveform in Resolve or whatever

Stabilization is based on reframing via gyro. So you can’t use 1/50 if you need heavy in-camera stabilization

It's very similar. I wouldn't say it's "better" except you can record to a higher quality format (ProRes) in a true log space.

ProRes log gets rid of the oversharpening. ProRes is overkill for an iPhone though. I just want unsharpened h265

As a videographer, I think Log video shooting is the most PRO feature this year. Reviewers who compare this with other phones without using log video is really pointless.😂 Apple Prores was not really that good to use along with other proper cameras but this looks like I can use with my Sony cameras finally!! The most annoying thing is that 16Pro will get better.. 😂

You can kind of trick the Blackmagic Camera app to do this. Choose prores log, then switch back to rec709 and it seems the sharpening stays off
