Since you have the RODE Pro, could you test Timecode sync between the RODE and BM Camera App? 7:20 - the iPhone supports HDMI out. You can plug any monitor to your USB Splitter. They showed this off a little on the BTS for Scary Fast event.

The iPhone 15 pro is not a camera, it's a mobile telephone device that happens to have a functional small camera. how can you recommend a beginner photographer/videographer to get an iPhone? Imagine someone is shooting street photography or a wedding and they get a Facetime call mid-shot after spending $3000 on a camera.

i never thought i would say that :) but after spending last week at a WRC dragging my big backpack with all the gear and a friend with an iPhone that he just got, get an iPhone for filming quick videos (also stabilization is phenomenal). these 2 shorts are all filmed with iPhone in different conditions, in crowded places by a guy who does not have a lot of filming xp kzbin.infobDWqiPDO2AE?feature=shared kzbin.infooZ5qUL5At_k?feature=shared and yes if you compare Canon 4k with iPhone you can see the difference in quality, especially if you need zoom in, but if you need to film something like those videos above, iPhone is a really good choice.

Even easier, if you open photobooth on your Mac you can use your iPhone as the camera using continuity. Its better than mirroring because you can adjust the camera while filming (zoom, add studio light effect, and other features) definitely a game changer.

@ Whoever you are, I don't know you personally but I can say that you're one of the non-judgmental and open-minded people who is not fixated on tangible or external factors in order to learn from someone like me. Just because someone doesn't have a piece of paper as a credential, doesn't mean that person is not entitled to share personal experiences with the hope & intention to inspire others. Keep up with whatever it is that you're doing to improve mankind or improving your life even to a slight degree each day. This is just one part of a bigger puzzle for creating my KZbin channel about holistic health. I literally could have died back when I was 14 years old due to major depression but here I am right now replying to you, a KZbinr, who's full of fulfillment and dedication to help others to be a better version of themselves. I ain't better than anyone else but my old self. That's all that really makes this KZbin thing more meaningful and enjoyable. Thanks so much for your support! I am hoping that you can join me with this endless personal development journey! :)

Yea nah, the Sony ZVE10, Fuji XT3, Canon M50, all are great setups that can be had for less price than the iPhone 15. (The XT3 has 15+ stops of dynamic range in log and 4k60. Buy it used along with a lens and it's still cheaper than the iPhone 15 pro max. As an added bonus it has the film simulations that made the x100v so crazy popular. The ZVE10 with a 50mm f1.8 can be had for less than the iphone 15) Android phones already had manual controls and log half a decade ago. The iPhone 15 pro is NOT the best beginner camera still. If you have it, it's a great tool. I wouldn't buy it just for the video features though.

I recently came back from a 6 weeks vacation. I have a history of owning cameras and neglecting them. When I had them with me on my trips, I only enjoyed them 50% of the time, maybe less, and the rest of the time I was just annoyed by the weight, the bulkiness, the inconvenience etc. Before my trip I though about getting a Fuji X S20. But I decided against owning a camera and only took my phone. I traveled only with carry on luggage. That means saving weight is important :) Now, since I am back, I can say, that I will never buy a camera ever again. I took so many memorable and nice videos and photos I would have never taken with a camera. Of course the quality is not the best but I am not a professional. I don't make money with those pics and videos. They are just memories and a phone is simply the best way to capture memories.

I recently purchased the new IPhone 15 Pro Max, just as an upgrade to my 11 Pro Max, and I was very surprised at how great the cameras were and the fact that it shoots in log. But… I personally still wouldn’t recommended spending £1200 on a 15 Pro Max to shoot videos on. Solely because it just struggles too much in lower light situations. If I had roughly £1200 for a camera I would go for a Pocket 4K or A7iii and not a phone. With that being said it is still amazing to see this kind of technology progress but it’s not at the point that I would recommend purchasing one as a beginner camera.

I think the best argument to be made here is a large portion of people who have iPhones qualify to get a free iPhone 15 pro through their cell carrier with a trade in. If you are paying for cell service anyway, and all you pay is taxes and an upgrade fee on the phone, then really the barrier to entry is even less than what matt says here. It’s more like $100 - $200 for everything he is saying, which I would argue does make this the best beginner option. It peaks the interest of someone by using a product they would already use anyway, rather than buying a bunch of equipment to possibly find out they aren’t all that interested, or motivated enough, to get in to the hobby.

hi. thanks for this video. about auto focus: do I understand correctly? you need to tap the screen to set the focus to the object you tapped on. (besides setting focus manually using rhe slider). QUESTION: how can I set auto focus when I film myself for talking head videos? I would have to walk towards the phone and tap the screen, but obviously my face would not be in the canvas at that moment. any solution for this?
@LJ-wo1wf
@LJ-wo1wf 10 ай бұрын
(though it's been four weeks since your comment) A couple ideas - You could expect that the phone would look for your face automatically and set its focus that way. Or, if you want to *lock* focus on where you *will* be, I'd aim the phone at another object at the same distance (whether it's just something nearby or you add a stand-in for yourself), then press and hold on the screen to lock focus on that object. Then it'll stay that way while you walk to your spot and start doing your thing.

Great video! I'm a novice youtube creator and I wanted to make sure you considered (in reference to cages) the Smallrig for iphone 15 pro. It seems to have endless mounting points for shoes, tripods, handles, and what i love is that it leaves the back exposed if you want to slap a magsafe battery on there while filming. I ordered one of their rigs and they're supposed to ship soon. Doesn't have a USB splitter but does I feel like that could be incorporated using... somehow XD. If this is a terrible idea, make a video about why for other novices like me :)

I use SmallRig’s iPhone 14 Pro Max cage constantly for my phone I got this summer. Mine has dual uses; beyond filming I cannot find a latex free case I’m not allergic to but they checked and this is safe for me. It makes the phone much heavier, but also much more solid if that makes sense. It gives something to grip to the edges better and protects them. I thought about but did not get the full set with handles due to the material they’re made of, but I wish I could have for sometimes. This version has two cold shoe mounts as well so I can use a light or two. I only take it off my phone for cleaning. It takes a few days to get used to not hitting the open button on the cage. I believe the 15 cage is similar to the 14’s cage so a USB splitter would simply be plugged into the phone itself, so shouldn’t be an issue with the cage, just adds to weight. I do not use a USB splitter, but I don’t need one. I do not film in pro res nor color grade preferring to capture reality/natural as it looks. I got the Apple Lightning to SD Card Reader to easier copy footage in comparison to uploading to cloud and can easily transfer without needing to remove the cage, just as I can charge. I also got the largest storage phone I could and will get a hard drive later. I do not and will not be filming with these attached, but then again I’m not filming myself in a studio but rather wildlife and nature, so I need to film on the fly. If I need more I use my real camera and super telephoto lens, tripod, etc. I do have an external mic when needed, but for things I’m filming that teensy mic captures a lot. I highly recommend SmallRig’s iPhone cages and a couple of their lights too. Been working great for me.

What about the newly released DJI Osmo Pocket 3? It's on a gimble, so it doesn't lose quality from using cheap digital stabilization like the iPhone 15 does. The new Osmo Pocket 3 also has a 1 inch sensor and blows away the iPhone 15 in low light and quality video. Since it has a 1 inch sensor, the video looks like it came from a professional camera and is not over sharpened like the video from and iPhone. The Osmo is also easier to use and comes with a mic that connects instantly via bluetooth for excellent audio.

Log video looks amazing for footage coming out of an iPhone - and that feature alone makes it worth the upgrade from any iPhone that came before - but the quality and depth of the image that you can get with an affordable APS-C mirrorless camera and some good glass is still far superior, and much more cinematic looking. And for photos the difference between mirrorless cameras and iPhones is even more vast. You simply can’t beat physics, and phone cameras will only be as good as mirrorless cameras the day they manage to cram a sensor of the same size into a phone.

The best beginner setup is literally just the iPhone. You don't need to get expensive lav mics and record to an external hard drive attached to the back of your iPhone to handle prores. DON'T record in prores if you are a beginner, just record! You don't need anything external if you are beginning. You don't even need an external mic if you are a BEGINNER- just use the built in mic. And then get a cheap BOYA lav mic that many people say sounds even better than the RODE. The setup shown in this video is far from a beginner setup. You don't even need the latest iPhone, use an older model. If you are a beginner, just START recording and editing.

love your videos Matti! As a phone camera - the value proposition is obviously insane - I mean it's also an amazing phone but you're getting the ability to shoot native pro res log and play with shutter angle, aperture, iso all that good stuff. BUT. I would have to strongly, strongly disagree that it's the best beginner camera! :D a beginner camera should be nothing BUT a camera IMO. No distractions! It should have the ability to choose from a wide range of lenses. It should be ergonomic and a pleasure to use with physical buttons and dials. You should be able to focus rack by hand with a smooth twist, ND filters should be cheap and easy screw on the end of a lens , not part of a convoluted rig on your phone! Is RAW necessary for a beginner? I dunno maybe I'm being to "traditional" but If a beginner came up to me and said they wanted to get into videography? I'd probably look at a second hand GH5? Or a canon 80d - spend less than £500 and give that beginner something they have to physically grapple with!! If they had £2000 I'd be pointing them at a used pocket 6k with a rig a couple of starter lenses! But for me that's an intermediate step, not for a beginner!

@@PeterAlanJohnson I'd argue ANY video capturing device can be used to learn composition or story telling. But a beginner looking to get into videography or cinematography also need to learn the fundamentals of how a videocamera works, which to my mind at least is best done with a simple DSLR. Getting hands on with lenses, dials, focus and aperture rings is a great way to understand the actual mechanics of the camera rather than just using a button on a screen. I'm probably more of a "hands on" kind of learner though.

@@andrewdickson1556 Completely agree - I think it's misleading for an influencer to be pushing the iPhone 15 Pro as 'the best beginner camera'. Ok, it's a great piece of kit and I bought it myself as a B cam that with Apple Log can easily be matched to my A cam. However, for any beginner it's essential to learn the fundamentals with an actual camera. Also, there's no need to ditch your current phone and spend 1K when you can spend half that amount on a real camera or similar like the GH5 which the 15 Pro will never match for a myriad of reasons. If, on the other hand you need to upgrade your phone anyway and learn how to use the Blackmagic app with manual controls for all and perhaps add a basic rig for it along the way, then go for it!

Hi, Matty! Amazing video! Question: did you notice any difference in stabilization using native camera vs Blackmagic app? is Blackmagic app as good as native camera speaking of stabilization?

From what I've seen in other videos, no. Blackmagic will be lacking in terms of stability compared to your native camera app

Is there any way to manage manual focus pulls better in the Blackmagic app? The only way I found is by scrolling a fiddly wheel on the screen. There's an option to connect Nucleus, but that would work only with and actual camera lens that has manual focus, right?

What about the DJI Pocket 3? It’s cheaper than an iPhone and has almost all the same features with a 1 inch sensor.

The new cage from SmallRig for the iPhone 15 Pro looks like it will solve some of the issues, but not a splitter.

Is it possible to use the iPhone 15 pro max as an external monitor for pro mirrorles cameras like Sony A7III? Sony already made is possible with it’s own flagship smartphone and it works with USB-C.

I'm a little confused, don't you have an Atomos Ninja V? Why not plug that into the hub, along with a battery? Isn't that how you would typically monitor any other camera? BM Camera let's you have HDMI clean feed... You could also use it as the recorder and connect it to the SSD if you wanted, I think, haven't tested. I have seen it done and it works, although it is a little bit annoying having to have another cable. The other super easy way to monitor your iPhone is to use airplay, and mirror your screen to a tv, many tv's have built in Airplay support, but you could also use an Apple TV and it should then work with any monitor or tv, there is a tiny amount of latency, which of course will vary based on your network. Based on Apple's event, it seems like they connected (and this is just speculation) - A 4 way powered USB-C Hub - An external Anton/Bauer Battery - SSD plugged into the hub - DJI Transmitter for remote monitoring (I am guessing its DJI) - Tentacle Sync for audio syncing in post This is kind of a pretty high end set up, where the monitoring solution costs more than the phone itself (although based on the BTS, they were monitoring on 50 monitors). I think you could replace that with the Atomos Ninja V maybe, for a smaller crew. The rest should be roughly the same. I really think an external battery is gonna be a must on this type of set up. I haven't ever seen cages that have built in usb-c hubs, is that a thing? Apple used the unreleased BeastGrip cage for iPhone 15 Pro Max, and I think that has enough mounting points when it comes out, and should support filters and lenses. I don't think anyone would build a cage with a built in USB-C hub, but I am planning on getting the BeastGrip and I can connect my own.
