#iphone15pro #proreslog #sonyfx30
Let's compare the color coming out of the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to Sony's FX30. Everything was shot on the iPhone in ProRes LOG, and the FX30 was shooting Slog3. Both were set to auto exposure and white balance. The Sony had a Sigma 16-28 f2.8 lens at 16mm to match the iPhone 24mm equivalent 1x lens. This might be a wonderful option for social media shooting as you can use the iPhone as the vertical camera mounted to your 16:9 main camera.
Let me know what you think!

The difference in sharpness quality was the most immediate giveaway for me at the beginning of the video. The iPhone sharpness causes a bit of aliasing on some of the more fine edges. Still, very impressive considering the camera is just one of the many features the iPhone has.

Yeah, I agree, for what the 15 pro is and the way media is changing you can't go wrong with it paring the footage now that log is available. I love this kit, the FX30 with the 15 Pro is a solid kit for a solo creator and most people outside the pixel peepers would have their mind blown to see what you can do with a phone now. Like you said mixing the footage would pretty much be seamless now. I loved this bro, I've been considering upgrading to this kit recently, and your video has helped me a lot.

A lot closer than I thought, I usually see the biggest give away for phone footage is the shutter/frame rate (which I suppose can be fixed with some ND). Biggest iPhone tell is still the flares from the lens when there’s a strong light source in shot. Would be happy to use either in a project though great vid.

The only way I could tell which footage was shot with the iPhone was that the iPhone was mounted on top of the other camera and thus had a slightly different POV. The difference in footage was very slight to me. I don’t believe the viewing audience cares or could tell the difference.
@ethan_webb
@ethan_webb 11 ай бұрын
Honestly could see the difference within the first four seconds of the video. While ProRes LOG helps a lot, there's still way too much digital processing going on for the image to have the natural feel a real camera has. Once the other footage was seen later in the video it was exponentially more obvious because of the depth of field difference between the two. Still, this is definitely a lot more serviceable than phone footage has ever been for certain applications

I never get the argument about sharpness when it comes to iPhone. People complain about the sharpness of the image with iPhones and then turn around and look for the sharpest lenses on APS-C/Full Frame they can find. It often sounds like a complaint just for the sake of there being a complaint. For me, iPhone has three obvious disadvantages: The lens flare that is an obvious iPhone indicator, the depth of field, and more difficulties in low light. IMO all three of those can be avoided or minimized by learning better photography/videography and careful editing. Sony APS-C line is a great value right now, but I think for people posting on KZbin/social platforms or maybe even doing small-ish photo book projects, iPhone is a great offer. Besides doing all the other things a phone does, it offers great-to-passable images at a variety of focal lengths, and none of its limitations are deal breakers for most people in most scenarios. Those limitations can also make you better at photography/videography.

Impressive. Just for clarification: Would the phone be oriented vertical on the proposed setup? If so, then despite having more vertical headroom in the phone shot, wouldn't the clips still fall victim to needing to be framed for both horizontal and vertical, resulting in a slightly compromised *framing* for both orientations (again, acknowledging that the vertically shot clips would be better than cropping a 16:9)?

Colours and sharpness are pretty damn close. Where you see a real difference, as you pointed out, is the depth of field and nicer bokeh from the bigger lens. A phone just can’t compete with that; the close up shots of the car gave it away immediately as the backgrounds look more blurred on the FX30 (obviously). It’s great to be able to use an iPhone as a B cam … great for people just starting out who can’t afford two cameras and lenses.
