It is really too bad that Apple doesn’t realize that repairability is one aspect of superior design.
@NickFje
@NickFje Жыл бұрын
They have known that for decades already. Companies don't want you to repair anything because they earn a lot less money if you stop coming back to their overpriced repair services. It is not that they are unaware about the fact people want a phone that could easly get serviced anywhere. They just prioritize profits. The only thing that comes to mind that could change this fairly quickly is new EU regulations requiring that all phones should be serviceable without any software locks and replacement hardware should be sold to non Apple repair shops at a reasonable price.

Especially when parts are locked down with software pairing. It serves no practical purpose other than trying to control the repair market as if they aren't making billions of dollars already selling their phones. No other manufacturer todate has this kind of anti-repair measure in place, it's totally unnecessary and malicious by Apple. Booo!!

@hishnash
@hishnash Жыл бұрын
You can replace it you just cant replace it with parts salvage from another device. Apple moved calibrate profiles to be stored server side a few years ago, this means that if you have a part that has never been used on another device booting into diagnostic mode will result in apples servers providing you with the calibration profile needed but using a part from another device just results in them thinking you are using a stolen part. What apple should do here is let you use these parts so long as the phone they used to be connected to has not been flagged as stolen/iCloud locked. Not letting you use parts that are suspected of being stolen is important as this massively reduces the value of stealing a phone.

As a consumer, I actually like that Apple serialises the parts. That way, I know when I get a replacement that it is a genuine new part, not just one that was taken off another damaged or stolen phone. It also prevents criminals from piecing together new phones using stolen parts or parts that did not pass QC on the production line. It's basically a very robust line of defence for the end user.

I'm okay with them having a system message that lets the user know that a part may not be genuine, but they lost me at which point they disable functionality (especially when other OEM parts from another genuine iPhone are used). @micahraney732
@micahraney732 Жыл бұрын
I can think of a few reasons off the top of my head that logic doesn't really hold up. 1. Where other than Apple or apple authorized centers, are you getting the "genuine replacements" in the first place? Why would they ever *not* have apple serialized parts? 2. If you're not getting them from one of those places, how are they supposed to do their job? 3. Who the heck told you that a part off of a genuine Apple phone "isn't a genuine replacement"? Doesn't that kind of undermine the entire point of repairability being good for anyone? If you break the screen on an iPhone, is the responsible thing to huck the whole thing, battery, charge port and all, into the trash? Really now? 4. cRiMiNaLs already do and can piece together phones with non-genuine parts. These software locks don't actually stop fraudulent or knock-off iPhones from appearing. Not that you, the end consumer, are actually affected by that, because let's face it, you're getting it from a mainstream retailer in the first place. 5. Calling it a "line of defense for the end user" implies that having your phone fixed by anyone other than Apple is some kind of attack. Which, maybe you think that way, and fine, you can have Apple fix it. But for the rest of us...? How did you get to an iFixit video? Are you aware of the incredibly stringent limitations that an apple authorized repair service has to follow? I used to work at a phone repair shop and basically anything besides a screen or a battery wouldn't be covered by the terms as I see them, to name the least of the concerns. Most shops lacking that certification *do not want it*, and it might be worth looking into why.
@The.JZA.
@The.JZA. 11 ай бұрын
@@micahraney732 If I can steal your phone and then easily take it apart and use the parts to fix my own phone or put them into other phones then that means Apple has lost the battle against thieves. Right now if someone steals your phone, it's basically useless to them and they cant even use the parts. That makes it undesirable to steal an iPhone and that is a win for consumers.

I don't see serialized parts as an issue in 2-3 years, when programmers get updated and will be able to crack Apple's code in newest devices. As long as the device is physically repairable, software blocks will be of no issue thanks to third parties, or in rare case Apple when they will be forced to remove part check.
@hishnash
@hishnash Жыл бұрын
The parts are not serliased like that. It's not a boolean flag that needs to be set. The issue is that the parts phsycialy do not come with the factory calibration profiles (stored locally). Apples SOC loads these from apples servers when you boot into diagnostic mode. Without the profile your going to get a LOT of bugs, while some devs might figure out provide profiles to the SOC through a side channel they still need to create them and this is costly process unless your a large factory with a big rig setup for the task.
