I work for an agency that has a ton of 9:16 content for our client social media accounts. Because of that, I started shooting on the iPhone 15 Pro Max because I was feeling so tired at the end of the day with my vertical mounts and heavy rigs, it made no sense. I've been having a PHENOMENAL time using the Blackmagic App recording to an SSD that I have in a MagSafe wallet so it's all contained easily. It's in a PolarPro case where I can use all my ND and polarizer filters. The stabilization in the Blackmagic App, is almost good enough to keep the gimbal at home depending on your camera moves. An added benefit of using a depth map would completely change the game once again. What I'm doing now, no one can tell it's an iPhone. Using Strada in the future and utilizing depth maps....well come on! A dream!

@kriskale9 ай бұрын
Will you elaborate on what you use the pixel 7a for? Video, or just photo?
@Mr_Kenneth6 ай бұрын
Hi there, I shot a window shutters commercial on the Pixel 7a. I just lit the set and used a lot of dolly tracking and push zooms at 60fps. I then stabilised the footage in Premiere. The 7a didn't have log just H265 but the results were excellent. At that point, and the type of commercials my clients wanted, I knew the Black magic camera was too bulky and overkill. I purchased the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the 512gb and the Brandon Li case and productibity went through the roof. I also did a 2 week product photoshoot in RAW with the iPhone and again, it blew away any misconceptions of what a smart phone can do.

Tbh as a cinematographer myself I don’t consider shallow depth of field as crucial to a cinematic image. Only separation between foreground and background which can be done on the iPhone with its subtle depth of field or through lighting and composition. This is because some of the most beautiful films of the past where shot on apsc sized film stock at f5.6 which is quite deep to me It’s just had to be a stylistic choice
@vlcheish9 ай бұрын
Infact one of the obvious signs of a low end budget production is the overuse of shooting with thin DOF(usually to cover up for the lack of set and lights). Using large format is more than just a DOF thing.
@theslimbin9 ай бұрын
@@vlcheish absolutely! Having shallow depth of field is a resent trend. In the past most cinematographers were chasing a sharp image above most things especially because you didn’t have a live high res image that you could instantly watch back to see if you missed focus or if the lens was sharp wide open (a more than you thing where almost unusable at anything under 2.8). And let’s not forget fluctuations in the gate, the focus could shift very slightly with every frame as the film moved through the camera, despite all the calibration, so at f1.4 you could sometimes see focus shift the smallest amount on static shots.
@GooseCrack9 ай бұрын
I completely agree. So much of the look is dependent on the grade and lighting, and the IPhone with only the grade and without the mapping looked really good.

You’ve got a great screen presence, almost like a “Vsauce” personality in the film industry. Great content! Although I don’t think iPhones ever will replace true cinema cameras, there is no doubt it makes “basic” filmmaking more accessible for the general public - professionally, for better or worse.
@TheConstructiveCritic8889 ай бұрын
Here’s the thing… I appreciate what you’re trying to accomplish. I’m also admittedly excited to the growth in development of these iPhone cameras. I think in another 5-10 years that we could literally be looking at them the same as a cinema camera. I also understand that some people have limited resources. But the lengths one must go through to do what you’re talking about to achieve that look, is it just more financially viable to spend the extra money to rent a cinema camera or hire a DP that already has their own camera?? What’s the difference in the end financially?
@Michael_Cioni9 ай бұрын
I concur. To be clear: I DID hire a DP (and gaffer and AC). No one gets great images on any camera for free. It gets easier with dynamic range and Apurture lights, etc, but you need great talent to get great images. That's not likely to change. I happen to have all this gear, so wrapping it around an iPhone instead of an Alexa is actually kinda easy when cages and cables are laying about. But if I HAD to make this work on a budget, the Nucleus + Beastcage + USB Hub is really all you need on Bogen sticks. That would be $2000 all in and you COULD do wireless video over AirPlay (Apple lets you do this with the Blackmagic Camera App). It's latent, so certainly not ideal, but it's free. That said, I still don't think anyone would ever do this. But it's how we establish foundations and get inspirations on what we COULD do. The 5D wasn't actually very good in 1080p, but people solved the gaps and it led to all the robust solutions we currently have. If I had to make a prediction, RED, Arri and SONY don't go away in 10 years, but I do think Apple will be in the mix.
@TheConstructiveCritic8889 ай бұрын
@@Michael_Cioni Completely agree! And I greatly appreciate the response! I re-read what I wrote to you and was worried it came off as pessimistic, and that’s not at all what I was trying to convey. I love the thought process and you have an engineer’s mentality in how you approach problem solving! I think, much like your video proved, that we are on the verge of these iPhones becoming actual cinema cameras. With where they’re at now I think I would be very willing to shoot something basic, easy, and experimental with it. It’s worth that much for sure! But for projects where I obtain a little budget $3,500+ I’m gonna stick to Arri and RED. But certainly in the past I never ever considered an iPhone and now I’m intrigued and keeping my eye on where they’re going. Thank you again! Love the video 🙏🏻

@Michael_Cioni9 ай бұрын
There are definitely other great phones out there with great features. iPhone 15 happens to be the only in a specific class of quality. Here's how that quality is different with Apple from other phones - iPhone 15 is the first smartphone to combine the following qualitative elements: 1. shoots an intra-frame codec (ProRes) 2. shoots 10bit sampling (ProResHQ) 3. shoots a log exposure (AppleLog) It's the combo of these 3 things together that have the most dramatic qualitative effect and put it on par (at least as far as signal processing) with professional camera systems.

Nice. I've used this depth map concept before and it works but the issue with Blace and others is that at times it doesn't capture the subject well enough for each frame so you get in focus/blurred bits mixed together especially at the edges of subjects which makes it look a bit unprofessional/choppy. You can always edit the depth map by frame for those bits though, and use other similar techniques to help.

There are many things I’d like to say. First, depth of field is the only thing I like about small sensors - actually when shooting with fX3 I try to shoot with closer aperture if possible . I think that’s a very interesting experiment . Of course, we are talking in the video about more than 10,000 dollars of equipment , which means that in reality you could buy a camera and lens and make it with more ease , but the proof of concept is very nice :-)

This was very funny. I admire you pushing the limits because the revolution is coming. It’s not the phone I’m scared of, it’s those VR.

Close! Reflections do appear weird on blurred material.

5:40 Be Still My Heart... I knew this day would come. After waiting since 2008.... (using the iPhone 4) for "B" roll... NOW... WE CAN and WILL... make a movie with APPLY iPhone... Holy Moley.... I am so EXCITED.

My major problem with the iPhone was not the features it included, rather the whole compatibility with the ecosystems that I am using, and TypeC has drastically changed this. Previously to even consider using iPhone as a viable option you had to buy multiple adapters which would total to the cost of just buying a brand new iPhone in the process. But now using the Blackmagic camera hooked into an SSD has made this such a dream to work with. I’ve done a few shots for our company and I never tell them what I use to see if they can tell the difference. You’d be surprised the dumbfounded look when you tell them the ip15 can compete with a mirrorless camera. Cheers for this and I wish your channel much success, but you probably wont need it given how much production quality and information goes into it to make this a stellar success

You're making a great point. And I have some new info that you might like: in our next Episode (EP 23) we did exactly as you said and took the iPhone "standard" or "off the shelf" accessories and tried to use them and shared the pricing. That comes out on March 19th. I think you'll get a lot from it and it addressees some of the points you made. Thanks for the comment!

So if iphone add a FUTURE AI focus mix with Lidar information could be the solution for that and break the market.

Make the app! You will do well. I travel all over the world and need a small rig. This is a great example of if you have the right lighting, you can make it look just as good for the untrained eye in which is 95% of the people out there. Telling the story, now that’s a different subject all in itself.

If you travel all over the world just get an fx30, man. It's gonna require the same amount of bits and bobs to put a working rig together. Even less than this, actually.

Right tool for the right job! After doing this experiment I did want to try depth of field adaptors and a lens - so if you want to check out the results, that's on Episodes 23, 24 and 26. We really pushed iPhone further than I ever thought possible. Thanks for the comment:)
