In retrospect, though, I will say that it was the best iPhone for the time (as in, the iPhone 5 was better for 2012 than the 4s was good for 2011 or the 5s was good for 2013, etc).

I was torn between an iPhone, iPad, or Microsoft Surface. After watching Verge reviews I don't think I should get any :-P I kind of mean that in a good way. You get open minded, helpful reviews, unlike most people who seem biased towards certain products. So now I'm thinking that no one this year has really taken the next step in having a breakthrough in mobile technology. Maybe I should hold off a few months to see what's in store for next year. Faulty Galaxy S2 will have to do for now.

Thanks for a fair and straight review. I completely agree with your last comments on the OS. It pushed me to jump ship for a few weeks. The thing is I invested so much in the ecosystem, and owning a Mac and iPad I have become accustomed to the seamless syncing. So switching back.

What you said is mostly factual (albeit opinionated), but I'll tell you, the reason why they didn't use MicroUSB is because it's very slow to carry power over to devices, so it doesn't charge the phones very fast. The 30-pin and Lightning connectors carry power at a faster rate, so they charge the phones at a faster pace.

Unless something changes in the future, I'll continue to consider the iPhone 5 the best phone for the time. In 2012, it offered every single thing I wanted out of a smartphone and there was absolutely nothing the 4S or earlier did better. The SE was a nice semi-recent upgrade of it, too.
