This is hilarious to me. I'm a photographer of almost 28 yrs and I hate anything fully auto. People always argue with me that they want point and shoot simplicity and don't want to mess around with settings. Now, suddenly everyone is carrying on about manual mode because their beloved favourite camera loses a comparison. The average user is clueless as to what most of the manual controls do. Manual control is great in the right hands and flaky in the wrong hands. It's also a pita on a screen, rather than proper physical manual controls.

Alright people let's make this simple. The xperia line up has always always!!! Kept its camera software to realistic terms. That means for you idiot it presents the real quality of the image and color in its shot. Lighting is very key to its auto function. In manual mode it is a very killer cam. But here is where the buck stops. It is no secret that both apple and Samsung and lg use artificial camera coloring. To make images more bright and crisp. This is software. What you are seeing with Sony is the hardware side of excellence and iphone the software side. Sony can easily place software to artificially add effects color etc. But it wont because thats what makes it stand out to those who like realistic photos

From a photographer's stand point, I say the 6s all the way. It's not about megapixels, I'm so sick and tired of people saying, but 23mp is better than 12mp! No, it's not! NOT AT ALL. Some of the most AMAZING DSLR's used in the professional world are only 12MP. It's all about the SENSOR. Disappointingly enough, the Z5 didn't invest in a better sensor like the apple phone. You can have a "high resolution" photo all you want, but what's the point if it's not even crystal clear? It's just a waste of space. Secondly, the color temperature may be better on the Z5 (cool vs warm), but you can easily edit the photo and adjust the color temperature if it isn't accurate. I've owned many different phones, and so far, by far, the iphone's photos have always been some of the clearest, sharpest photos with great contract and saturation. I would say only about 10% of my photos have a problem with the color temperature, so editing 1 out of 10 photos to correct it isn't a big deal. And in a world where people use instagram and facebook to share photos, it takes like 0.5 seconds to throw it through a filter. Anyone who thinks the Z5 camera is better than the iphone camera is just fooling themselves. It's one thing if you hate apple phones, but you just can not deny that it is better. Because then that's not only denial, that's just stupid.

The Manual mode on Xperia phones is NOT the Manual (M) mode on SLR/DSLR/MILC cameras. These phones' Manual mode allows you to access all the pixels (23MP) and keep EV exposure compensation handy on the screen, and the mode still does automatic exposure. Whereas the phones' Auto mode (aka Superior Auto) gives you half the pixels count and a higher JPEG compression hence much poorer image quality.

Batterylife is so much better on sony as always than iphones, gaming side, sony got playstation support for controllers and remoteplay.. and it's waterproof :) iphone isn't even protected from water.. :)

Z5 video was horrible. Shaky and not clear. The photos from the Z5 had poor dynamic range too. Clouds were blown out and poor contrast. Sony needs to have Apple do their camera software.

did you use the 8mp default setting for xperia z5? because it gives better image quality than full resolution, especially in low light. DxOMark tested z5 in 8mp default mode. Please test z5 against galaxy s7. it would be interesting to see z5's autofocus vs the dual pixel autofocus of sammy. Perhaps, even better is to test z5 against the competition once it gets the Marshmallow update.

+Garth St. Omer According to my knowledge, higher resolution should be used for landscape photos which are mainly have good light condition. For example, Sony camera A7S just have 12 Mpixels which makes the pixel size much bigger than A7R with 36 Mpixels allows more light can be absorbed and the result is way better photos in low light. So this is very understandable why this 23Mp on the Z5 can not keep up with 12 Mp on Iphone even both sensors are made by Sony (yeah Apple makes better software but pixel's size does make huge difference). However, i should mention that Samsung Galaxy s6 and S6 Edge has the same pixel's size on the sensor but bring a better results in low light. The 12800 ISO mobile camera is just a gimmick where there is no true advantage over other phones.

Decent comparison. Both phones have great cameras. I will say that I think HDR was turned on on the iPhone but not on the Z5 because on the outdoor shots the sky was more visible on the iPhone and blown out on the z5, so not really a fair comparison there.

In all comparison test I have seen, using just the default camera settings, the Samsung Galaxy S6 was the best phone. This is how 95% of the users are using it. Only the LG G4 was better when using different settings. But Samsung already updated the software so that also RAW pictures etc. can be done. The average ranks are Galaxy S6, LG G4 and iphone 6 at third.

Does anyone know which company makes the camera on the iPhone 6s? Apple used Sony Exmor RS in the 5s and 6. I think you accidentally left the image stabilisation turned off on the Sony. iPhone 6s Plus has OIS optical lens shifting IS just like a proper camera, therefore should be better. The iPhone 6s doesn't have OIS and thus would be a better comparison against the Z5.

it can't hurt to back up a little to get more like the z5 would, but I prefer 6s all the way. Sure you said something about your black jacket, but iPhone gives is a bit more light and detail on it to me. Other than that I think you're right about everything else.

SuperSaf, the photo comparison does not take into account that the Z5 uses a 24mm lens vs. the iphone's 30mm lens. The objects in the Z5 pics are zoomed in much further than the iphone's, so of course the iphone pics look more detailed. The objects need to be the same relative size to the frame, so that they are the same optical resolution to do a fair comparison. Basically, you're comparing pics taken from a wide-angle lens vs. a telephoto lens. Not a proper comparison.

Im pretty sure that the Xperia Z5 have allot more options for increase or decrease light, contrast etc etc, on the manual tab in the camera which im sure that the Iphone don`t have to the same degree. So if you are used to taking pictures in general im quite sure that the Z5 would contribute better for taking pictures with things turned down or up for maximizing the quality of the photo, or just give the picture another tint ^^

I'll give you all quick clues In day to day usage they are on par, except for white balance, usually iPhone give you warmer color Switch to low light, indoor, macro and FullHD video, then the difference will be pretty noticeable

Just got a SIM-free UK Z5 Premium and I find it unbelievable from Sony that it's still stuck at 6.0 (not 6.0.1) and with the February 2016 security update. Also the battery seems to drain 1% per minute with minimal use. I know right. How about your 6S Plus mate? Thoughts?

I have an original Z and have always been really disappointed with the camera on the whole, especially when I see photos taken on the iPhone 5. The Z5 looks to be similar... great in good light and hopeless at everything else. Camera quality will be my deciding factor and I'm struggling to choose between the Z5 which I'd generally prefer, and the iPhone 6s.

If I had to consider one of these 2 as camera only (not considering OS etc.) I would go for the Z5 for both photos and video. Both are very capable the fact that makes me choose the Z5 is that it produces more color accurate images and videos also a big advantage for the camera is that the Z5 is waterproof, giving you a camera capable of shooting in rain or underwater, also fast autofocus making the Z5 the overall winner IMO. The low light shot is much much better on the iPhone, but I still prefer the Z5 as most of my shots would be taken outdoors. I think that the iPhone gives a better out of the box video, but if you have the chance to do some post processing on it, the Z5 is better because it doesn't apply the contrast so you have more to work with, so for normal people the iPhone is better and for professionals Z5 is better. The audio is hands down much better on the Z5, audio is much more important in video than good video quality so if you have to go with out of the box audio then definitely the Z5

+Devin Oct still z5 tops the iphone in everyway, hi-res audio, batterylife, waterproofing, camera specially on manual mode, z5 is for pro users.. have you seen whites on z5 is still white while iphone6s have yellowish colors? not to mention, z5 has playstation support, and LDAC hardware which plays audio on a hi-res/lossless quality using wireless headphones.. no phone has that yet.. you need external dac amplifier to play 100khz or more on your device.. for premium versions screen has 4k resolution which means you can play true 4k content..

nexus2077 what you stated mostly are irrelevant here. camera in smartphones are used for a quick shoot of unpredictable moment, you see an interesting moment that will only last couple of seconds or minutes, and you immediately snap it. if you need to tinker settings with pro mode you will lose the moment already, to be honest if i really want to be full manual like that, i'd go for mirrorless camera really. still, 4K recording without OIS is a deal-breaker.
