oussama j that's the thing, it's on 23mp - he does mention it in the video. Problem being that the Z5, just like the Z1, 2, 3 etc. before it, is designed to sample down to 8mp for increased clarity and less noise. From experience, it is virtually impossible to get good low light shots at 23 but it's remarkably easy to get great night shots at 8mp. Saf, bless him - I like his work, made the same mistake that many reviewers have made: thinking 23mp must be best. No. 8mp shots are best.

as a Z2 owner i do know the real potential of the camera because i test it almost daily and i tweak all the manual setting and with time i was able to get amazing shots with it , it is about the technic not only the hardware ,same for the z5 other reviews show the opposite results of what we see in this video

most ppl double tap a button to open the camera app, tap shutter button and turn off screen which is like 4 seconds.. nobody wants to have to change ur megapixel to 8mp every time you want to get a good shot in lowlight and you might even have to try both 23 and 8 because you won't know which is better for the situation your in. that's why the s6 wins in lowlight . takes 4 secs to get a good pic compared to the z5

As a Z2 user, I'm so dissapointed with the Z5. 23mp means nothing if it's software can't back it up. got to say though, intelligent steady shot seems more stable than Ois. colours are crap and detail... what a joke. from the mic test, looks like the muffled sound is still an issue. people always complain they can't hear me on my z2.

+Fusion twistz Which manual controls are you referring to? Phones have a fixed aperture, so you can't play with depth of field. So what miracles can you pull off with manual shutter speed and ISO? You could play with white balance, but the camera probably gets that better than you could anyway. Basically, all you can improve is the exposure on the occasions the camera gets it wrong. The same can be done on the S6, but the S6 is well ahead to begin with.

Hey super saf, I love your reviews (thumbs up) the only thing is because the Z5 is a wider lens you have to move closer with it,on all pictures, to get the same field of view. I think that would have made spider shot easier and I believe that's why you couldn't focus on it. Moving away was the opposite of what you needed to do to focus on the spider. Lol. AL Mamari Ibrahim nah, its white balance is inaccurate most of the time. If you want natural colors, go with the iPhone/Google Pixel. Galaxy phones have superior white balance as well. It's just too cold on the Z5. Just because it's cooler doesn't always make it more. natural

Same here. As much as I'm pissed that Samsung took away things like waterproofing and IR blaster (I don't care about removable battery and storage), the camera is more important to me. I was really looking forward to getting the Z5 premium. The 4k display is enticing though, but not enough to make up for the video and picture quality. Back to either a Motorola X Pure, a Galaxy Note 4 Edge, S6 Plus, or Note 5. Not sure anymore.

I think there are some points to get clearer, regarding many comments below: - when testing a smartphne camera, we have to be pertinent concerning the logical/previewed usage of it. The smartphone's one should, theorically (that might be subjective, I agree) be optimized to be the most accurate/adapted in every situation (= versatility), so that any user can take a good shot without to need any competence. This is the purpose of the auto mode, which is better on the S6 all the way. I think this is the most important point to judge a camera on a smartphone, besides the hardware caracteristics of course. An experienced user would indeed use the Sony's settings far better than its auto mode here, but for the majority of users, it's not really something they'd rather have, rather than a good automatic adjustment (look at the iPhones' cameras, it's been a major point of their success). - I think, nevertheless, as loads of ppl watching it, that this comparison is unfair, in that even though the auto mode is fondamental, that doesn't mean it can summary the whole camera! The more so as Sony is known to have great (if not the best, yeah I may say that easiely) manual camera capability, it would have been a decent choice to compare the options & results they give. I'm definitely not a expert on this area, so I only refer to other's ppl' opinions, but it seems the Z5 (as its predecessors) has an amazing camera on this side. Consequently, it would have reversed the advantage of the S6, in a desserved way. - It's pretty obvious for more of us now, but some seem to still ignore it: MegaPixel number is by no means proportional to quality! So stop using this outdated argument. There is in fact a compromise between the size & the number of pixels on phones' captors, since they're small. This is why too many pixels may trigger worse low light perf. It's also linked to the focal, but anyway... On this part, I think the Z5 does an awesome job on a large panel of cases, & in low light, the iso option often makes a good job if I'm right. So its 23 MP are a good point. Yet, that does not really make it superior to the S6, because the difference between both is not that big (16 is already big) to be revelant in most situations; I mean if you zoom the shots at their max, it will sometimes be too creepy to enjoy the amount of 23 MP. - Now, if we focus on the recording part, I found the Z5 did a clearly better job. The stabilization was just the best I've ever seen on any smartphone, both looked nice about the rest, & someone knowing how to use the advanced options would certainly make a far better production with the Z5 imo. So, I agree this comparison was incomplete, even if I prefere the S6's camera, as I'm not a advanced user & the auto adjustment is what I need the most. I think this is the same for many users. Thx, & it was nonetheless a appreciable & qualitative review :)

+Markus Kröger to be honest really it's weird because Sony made the sensor that's in the S6 yet Sony's newest 23MP can't even beat their own 16MP sensor in most situations. My only possible answer would be that Sony's software processing is causing it to not look so great. Would be great if the 23MP sensor could output RAW files(it doesn't currently) to see the quality of the image before it's processed heavily(and also process them myself).

Thanks for this useful review. As an advanced macro photographer I'm amazed with these macro results of the s6! I would really like to play with that, especially combined with the raw function on note 5. As for the sound, in my experience the overall sound from the z5 sounds much more distant, not as clear compared to the s6.

I preferred the footage on the S6 much better than the Z5 in almost all situations. The Sony sensor, ever since the Z1, constantly overexposes automatic shots, and dynamic range and detail are noticeably better on the S6, but still, DxOmark recently gave the title of "best smartphone camera" to the Z5, after a lot of tests, so I don't get it.

I think the biggest issue with Sony xperia z family is the back glass panel that bounces the light twice and the position of the led flash. I have z2 and I have the same bluesh issue specially in low light areas. bye the way nice comparison between two monsters.

It depends on what you want from a phone.I recently bought a Z5 and i will concede that the S6's Camera is better in many aspects. Where the Z5 wins is definitely in situations will lots of light as you can see from outside photo and videos. Although the the steady shot really helps out on the video. For me i chose the Z5 over the S6 based on how stylish and premium feeling the Z5 does. One thing that i cannot stand on the S6 is the raised camera. That is my opinion. I think in the end of the day if you want a good camera you can get a point and shoot for under £200 and get far better photos than both of these phone cameras.

The stabilisation of the Z5 is superb, just like it was on the Z3... but why is the camera so terrible? I tested it and it sometimes makes worse photos than the original Xperia Z!!! There's just no comparison to any other flagship camera and that comparison to the S6 was just a massacre!

However, day time shot Z5 is much better especially when you take photo of landscape, buildings so on. 4k video overheating problem: completely depends on where you live and temperature there lol 2~30 mins I'd say.

S6 wins overall in terms of mic quality, detail, colours in low light and in general and autofocus. Z5 has good image stabilisation but picture quality is lower than the S6.

THIS review shows that the camera on the S6 is better, other reviews praise the Z5 for its camera being better than that of the S6. I don't think that you could go wrong either way. I do love Samsung's shot at delivering a premium smartphone. It certainly isn't bad, but you'll need a lot more to come at the Xperia Z5.

Well, thanks for that Video. I was close to buy a Z5.Camera being the priority, might wait. For sound, I'll give the edge for sony, they have an FM tuner. Samsung did not bring back that option since S2.

Plenty of options on the xperia z5 are avalaible and those options allow us to capture amazing photos in every situations. we just have to configure it as it has to be. I have the Z5 and I'm not experiencing the same issues you've presented in this video at all... I don't trust this test.

+DavidoggL the Z5 is definitely worth it. if you want to see more footage captured with this phone, go to my instagram : tonyrp_ (time lapse, landscape photos, video showing how much stabilization is huge...) they actually updated the camera app but I'm not sure if they improved the camera itself or not, for me this camera is awesome, we just have to use it as it has to be used. of course, this phone is not perfect, as all phones on the market but it is one of the bests, trust me.

+SuperSaf TV The front camera video in z5 is "cropped" in respect to the S6 because stedy shot is on. If you turn it off you will get a much wide angle video.

saf could u do a LG v10 vs Sony z5 ? in your last few video, I already decided to go for the z5p but it's still not available yet and after these few video cameras compare ..... I'm starting to think otherwise ....plus the LG v10 really sound not too bad from other reviews ..... just asking 😝
