iPhone’s Dynamic Island: The Downsides

I've only played with the phones in an apple store a couple of times. I totally agree with this sentiment though. My biggest issue by far is how intrusive it is. I'm kind of shocked that apple would accept a regression from the notch in that regard. From the time they first introduced the notch back on the X I was already thinking how long until they can completely eliminate it. Now we're going backwards.

Totally agree. The only reason they won't do it is because they have a giant ego and they refuse to go the way of android because they want to seem original like they have unique ideas. But the problem is you can already do most of these functions just from pulling down the screen at the top or quickly swiping to the app and back to your other app by doing a half swipe up and opening up the other pages. It's very easy and quick and you can do most of it from the bottom of the screen that you can actually REACH. Whoever came up with this asinine idea is a total moron.

Couldn't agree more. It looked cool at first but it's very big and it got in the way when watching videos. Suddenly, the 14 Plus looks really good. It has a good deal now with $150-200 "off" (edit) because it doesn't sell very well.

I hate dynamic island. I prefer the notch. It might make sense on a small phone where you can easily reach the top, but I don’t want to be forced into using it on devices that are already large and unwieldy. If it is the only thing available when my iPhone becomes outdated I’ll just leave Apple. They can keep it.

My biggest pet peeve about the Dynamic Island is that it doesn’t blend in and stands out in my peripheral vision when watching videos or movies in full screen. Not something I noticed with the notch. If there is any way they can make it disappear in video mode or blur the right most edge gap when watching videos that would be great.

Imagine a big chunk of dead pixels sitting down the left side of the tv in your living room or computer. Island and notch really need to go. Give me Touch ID, no selfie cam, and a perfect rectangle of unobstructed pixels. Ty.

I hope the DI doesn't stay for too long. It's the only reason why I'm not upgrading. I tried it on a friend's phone and it's constantly in your face and takes up so much space. Pretty terrible !

It’s not as bad after using it for while. It very much fades in the background. But I still stand by what I said before which is that it’s a gimmick. I would say go ahead and upgrade as it’s not a problematic feature and this is Apple’s new design direction till they figure out under the display technology

The Island is really a way to disguise the camera and the sensors, while using it as a selling point, I'm not impressed and actually makes me consider to instead upgrade to a iPhone 13

Idk why every tech review channel almost vomits at the start of every video when they have to say the name “Dynamic Island” … me personally, I think it’s an accurate name. It’s an island on the screen and is dynamic. Idk. I’ve had the 14 pro max for almost a month and the first week or so I didn’t like the dynamic island due to it was visually in the way but now I’ve had the phone going on a month the dynamic island isn’t a nuisance to me anymore since I’ve trained myself to ignore it and only pay attention to it when necessary

The point is though you shouldn't have to train yourself to ignore a feature. This company well knows that many people have abandoned them for android because they want to be able to turn something like this off completely. I still like iPhones and everything I use is integrated into the iCloud so I really can't switch at this point but it's annoying to me that they're really making all these decisions on ego and not because it's a true innovation. They're just trying to save face or try to come up with some supposedly world changing feature but they never said to ask herself whether anyone actually wants a world teaching feature or whether we just want the basics but in better form🙄

This is the main reason I still will not upgrade. I have no plans to upgrade until they go to a hole punch design (if they ever do), or a touch id in the display. I have had thoughts since it came out to give it a try, but I just hate the look of it, and this video confirms my feelings even further. And the fact there is no other reason to upgrade really since about like the X. All of the iPhones are good. Thank ya!

It’s so use-less, and worst of all counterintuitive to a lot of existing iPhone gestures. It reminds me of the touch bar on the Mac Pros. It’ll be gone once they embed their camera under the screen.

Android manufacturers simply minimise the Intrusion with a small hole punch. This is a far better approach. The Dynamic island is fancy speak for a big ugly notch that makes watching video and awful experience.

The hole punch is just for a regular camera. The reason there’s a Dynamic Island is because there’s Face ID sensors in it.

I had the same opinion as soon as this was introduced. Maybe can avoid the fingerprint in the front camera with some screen protector, but it’s impossible to use the island with one hand.

With iOS 16.1 Dynamic Island comes down with Reachability. And with 2:1 content it’s better to go full screen and just have the black hole, it gives a more immersive experience and the hole mentally disappears if you care about the content.

After using the dynamic island since Day 1, I can comfortably say it doesn’t smudge up the camera even close enough for it to be a problem. Except you have Cheeto’s on your fingers all the time, the camera works perfectly even after you touch it. It’s one of those things you think is a problem until you actually use it.

Apples idiotic obsession with face id has caused them to fall so far behind the other makers it’s ridiculous. While Samsung and others have made the goal of an all screen phone a reality Apple keeps trotting out the same tired lineup year after year. The fact that they have stuck with that hideous display robbing notch illustrates just how much contempt they have for their users. The attitude seems to be that Apple users are mindless sheep.fools who will embrace a giant black space on their screens as a virtue because Apple tells them it’s so. Finally I jumped ship for the galaxy because they are just as fast now and they have much nicer screens. Now apple has started in with their new notch,useless “dynamic island” which robs just as much screen as the notch. So now we are going to have to put up with this shit for a few years until the dump it It’s sad because they used to be innovators,now they have lost the race. Face ID should be abandoned. It’s an unnecessary gimmick. It’s a phone,not Fort Knox. Fingerprint scanners are secure and all that’s needed. Supposedly now apple is brining back finger print scanners on the next phones. If someone steals your phone you’ve got bigger issues in your life than worrying about someone trying to bypass your fingerprint lock. Which by the way someone can do with a Face ID phone just by using a photo of you.

Yes, and you already have the ability to wipe your phone immediately from any computer The second you know that someone has it so none of those features are even really necessary. Yeah maybe it would take a while for you to figure out that you don't have it in some cases but then you can just use the fingerprinting which I think is even more secure than face ID. I've got the 13 promax and just found out about this bubble and now I will refuse to upgrade until it's gone. They're doing this because of their ego. they think they're the stuff and can't let it go but has anyone ever stop to ask themselves whether users really even want some world changing feature? I don't need any world changing features what I need is the ability to change out my battery, a faster phone that doesn't overheat, a great camera, and more space so I don't have to be stuck in the dang icloud for the rest of my life ! It needs to be disabled permanently. this is one of the dumbest ideas they've ever had. I totally agree that it's WAY more distracting as a little box separated from the top of the screen then the cutout. I literally never noticed the cut out EVER, and it never bothered me. Instead of trying to find a creative way to solve this problem why don't they just do what non-Apple phones do? They want to continue coming up with these unique ideas but let's face it guys they don't have them anymore and I don't really care. I don't need them to be innovators I just want them to make a nice phone that has features that I want but when they don't listen to the user it makes me not want to buy the new version and I refuse to do it at this point if I'm gonna have to deal with the stupid box at the top. I'll use my 13 forever if that's not gonna go away.

why so arrogant? Don't be rude. Just because someone has an Apple product doesn't mean they're one of those stuck up people that thinks they're better than others. I got Apple because I liked it I like the interface better when I got my first smart phone in my 20s. At this point it's what I know how to use and I don't want to switch to another phone. I am annoyed with plenty of things about The company itself and the way they do things but I still like my iPhone. Because of the feature now I refuse to upgrade and I hope they change it but whatever. It is what it is. People have different preferences and my brothers constantly telling me that I should get an android instead but guess what? I don't like them!
