I used to leak. Well, not leak. A lot of people get that wrong. Leakers aren’t the people reporting the leaks to you. Those are… reporters. Leakers are the ones actually leaking the information TO the reporters. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes accidentally. We’ll get to that in a minute.
But it was a huge high. A huge, stressful, anxious, exhilarating, ego-boosting, soul-crushing high that I loved and hated every time. Which is pretty much how I'm feeling about the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Ultra leaks from last year, and the iPhone 15, Pixel, and Samsung leaks for next year already!

I value my time a great deal and I carefully and surgically select the kind of channels I pay attention to. Rene Ritchie is one of those tech personality I value listening to. He validates himself and doesn’t make videos for the sake of gaining ephemeral attention. Every video is worth the time. As far as Apple products are concerned, i don’t care about leaks…I’m not an accessory maker.

I'm taking a break from leak culture or whatever. All of this talk of the "ultra" is really ridiculous. The 15 will not have some radical redesign; the Dynamic Island is here to stay at least for 4 years, because of the EU we know that usb C is coming, there's not going to be any major updates to the cameras for a while... I can say that I definitely got hooked on all the leak talk but I'm burnt out now; this 14 cycle was super long and mostly wrong. I hope others begin to do the same but hey if you still love it more power to ya! I really have to give it to the Dynamic Island. We may have known about the pill shape but being surprised by the software was truly a breath of fresh air! Imagine that, actually being surprised by something again. 🥺

@@Fehnz It's more usually true every three years or so. The iPhone 12 through 14 models are all variants of the design; I expect the iPhone 15 models to potentially look quite different.

@@Sacto1654 i wouldnt call the jump from 11 to 12 a “redesign” lol its literally the same just recycling of the squared edges. Wanna talk about an actual redesign the iphone 7/8 -> iphone X… now thats a true redesign… everything since then is a slight alteration (X to 14)

I don't think Apple is going to bring back the "Plus" term. Especially given all the baggage carried by the term and how woke-sensitive the company is. They seem to have settled on the "Max" moniker, so I expect it will be: iPhone, iPhone Max, and iPhone Ultra. (Assuming Ultra is a thing at all.)

Its kind of apples (no pun intended) and oranges but some youtubers crave attention so much that they just make things up. Their "leak" source is their imagination. I don't see it that much in tech (yet) but I do see this in some channels that report on sci-fi rumors like "Disney has had enough of xyz and she's been removed from all future Star Wars projects." And it turns out to not be true at all. It took me some time to realize they weren't reporting on rumors as they say they were - they're making the rumors. So, yeah - its a better time to be an analyst than a leak reporter as their credibility is increasingly defined by their need for attention.

The leak culture has gotten a bit crazy as of late that the people I used to watch I no longer do so just because I couldn't keep up with it anymore and was constantly changing daily. I still read about it in online tech publications but otherwise I don't keep up. At this point in the year I don't even give any weight to the next generation iPhone or Apple Watch or anything just because I know it will change between now and launch day anyway.

As a viewer, I have switched to deliberately avoiding most stories/videos about upcoming leaks. I feel a little hypocritical about that, because it was due to leaks that I ended up with an iPhone 13 mini instead of an iPhone SE. I put off the purchase of the SE based on advance leaks/rumors, and I'm very glad I ended up with the 13 mini instead of the SE or the 12 mini. But there's still a little irony there, because I put off the purchase of the iPhone 12 mini because of an advance rumor which (it turned out) was *wrong.* I benefitted from the leak, but the leak itself was incorrect. But at this point, I'm just tired of all the advance leaks and rumors. I don't want to encourage more of them by watching.

It’s all just marketing speak. First we had S designations on phones then we got SE. We originally had Plus models which became Max models with the XS. If you think too hard it isn’t a stretch to imagine the next generation iPad mini as an SES Plus-Max iPhone.

Of course he will still be doing them, but the unboxing and first impression videos are no longer his focus. I have to say that I enjoy his long form, big scope videos just as much and he brings his unique perspective of the ins and outs of Apple to all his videos, but his focus has shifted more to trends, tropes, and general tech.

I used to follow some TV shows really close, looking for leaks and inside info often months before they aired, its the same trap when you invest time in anything you get obsessed with. I'm watching the 15 leaks but not relying on them as proof until at least mid next year when we will be months out from the release.

I mean you could’ve done this video in about 17 seconds as a short the reason that people shouldn’t leak is because I really don’t see the point. if you’re really a true tech nerd it’s fun to see what happens to already know what it is in a lot of times being wrong oh it does it disappoints people when you get these silly comments that they review something like what they thought it was going to be versus what it is. that is the biggest problem with leaks and I mean personally which I’m sure nobody really cares about I just don’t understand why a person with pretty much base their existence on being a leaker it just seems so boring after awhile. That’s the reason I stopped watching Sam Cole and his job podcast buddy it’s like a whole week that it’s just I don’t know I mean I know it’s personal preference in a lot of people probably like it I just I just don’t see the point of it it it seems like not something that really adds a lot of value but I guess Kc a lot of clicks

Rene, I appreciate your experience and desire to do the right thing. KZbin has turned into a giant waste of content, the select few who like you who have experience are ripped off word for word by thousands of other channels. It’s time in this economy that smart people get back to real work and real jobs and be productive with their time. One simple solution would be to impose a 90% tax on any social media revenue by content creators. If people truly want to help others and still post content go ahead, but it’s not going to be a JOB. More than leaks themselves, I’m more interested in the release schedule when I’m looking for an upgrade. Newer stuff in general will be better, and older stuff will be sold on discount when their differences don’t justify buying the latest. Upgraded my Apple Watch 1 to 7 a week ago, in here got it for half the price of series 8. And Ultra, even if I hike and practice long distance running, didn’t seem like such an upgrade. Especially with the new low power mode and I’ll be carrying that power bank on hikes anyhow. But AMDs leak on their roadmap had me waiting for zen4 because it’ll support the next gen standards. Get new motherboard and I know it’ll support all the standards for the next decade(?) in case I want to upgrade any components I’ll be getting now. But Apple leaks are in general just.. weird, it’s a whole business around guessing, really. I love the whole i or ! hole controversy that got so many folks raging.
