Replacing the iPhone X display is a delicate process that requires patience and the right tools. Here is a step-by-step guide for doing it yourself:
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Replacement iPhone X display (OEM or high-quality aftermarket)
- Pentalobe screwdriver (P2)
- Phillips screwdriver (size #000)
- Suction cup
- Plastic opening tools or spudger
- Tweezers
- Heat gun or hairdryer (optional but recommended)
- Anti-static mat (optional but recommended)
- Adhesive strips (for resealing the display)
Instructions:
1. *Power Off the Phone*
- Turn off the iPhone X completely before starting the repair.
2. *Remove the Pentalobe Screws*
- Use the pentalobe screwdriver (P2) to remove the two screws located next to the Lightning port on the bottom edge of the phone.
3. *Apply Heat to the Edges of the Display*
- Gently heat the edges of the display with a heat gun or hairdryer to soften the adhesive securing the display to the frame. Don't overheat-just warm enough to loosen the adhesive.
4. *Lift the Display with a Suction Cup*
- Attach a suction cup to the lower portion of the screen. Gently pull upward while inserting a plastic opening tool between the display and the frame to begin separating them.
5. *Work Around the Edges*
- Use the plastic opening tools to carefully work around the edges of the phone, cutting through the adhesive.
Be cautious around the top, where the Face ID hardware is located.
6. *Open the iPhone X Display*
- Once the adhesive is loosened, lift the display slightly from the left side like a book, leaving it connected on the right side. Be cautious not to pull the flex cables.
7. *Disconnect the Battery*
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws securing the metal shield covering the battery connector. Use a spudger to carefully disconnect the battery.
8. *Disconnect the Display Cables*
- Remove the screws covering the display connectors and lift the metal shields. Use a spudger to disconnect the display cables (three cables in total). Be careful not to damage the connectors.
9. *Remove the Old Display*
- After disconnecting all cables, you can remove the old display from the iPhone.
10. *Prepare the New Display*
- If your new display doesn't come with pre-installed adhesive, apply the adhesive strips around the frame. Also, ensure the new display has any required components, such as the earpiece speaker and front camera bracket, transferred from the old display if needed.
11. *Reconnect the Display Cables*
- Carefully reconnect the new display's cables to the iPhone, aligning them properly. Ensure they are secure but do not apply too much pressure.
12. *Reconnect the Battery*
- Reconnect the battery cable and reattach the metal shield over it.
13. *Test the New Display*
- Before sealing the phone, turn it on and test the new display. Check touch functionality, brightness, and other features like Face ID.
14. *Seal the Phone*
- Once you’re confident everything works, power off the phone again. Press the new display into place starting from the top, and gently work your way down. Apply even pressure to seal the adhesive.
15. *Reinstall the Pentalobe Screws*
- Finally, reinstall the two pentalobe screws near the Lightning port.
Your iPhone X should now be fully assembled with a new display!
Notes:
- **Face ID Hardware**: Be extra cautious around the Face ID hardware (proximity sensor, flood illuminator, dot projector). Damaging these components can render Face ID non-functional.
- **Water Resistance**: Replacing the display may compromise the phone’s water resistance.
