Great info, thank you !!! Quick unsolicited advice: (super tiny yet important point) Remember that YOU know this stuff, but we don't (I mean, that's should be the assumption of any good teacher). So for example at 2:48 you start to explain "Record Video", but you are blocking it with your fingers as you click it. Maybe leave it blank just for like a full second so that if nothing else we can pause more easily. That's all, tiny detail. If you use the portrait photo mode where there is a person in the scene you can use the aperture setting on the top right. If there are no people in the scene the iPhone XR portrait mode doesn’t work so you have to use another app for that. I have used one called Focos which does the job.....

To be honest the front facing camera is not the best on the XR, they made improvements on the iPhone 11 and 12. I am not aware of any real time filters you can apply on what's app so the only thing to do is consider getting a good light. Either a small Softbox or Ring light could work well.

A little known trick when taking pano shots is that you can also do vertical panos by holding the phone sideways, then moving the phone up (or down).

I cover the aspect ratio at 12.25 in the video. As you swipe along the bottom menu, photo mode is regular horizontal or portrait aspect ratio, then after portrait there is a square crop option. In terms of resolution the native app doesn't allow you to adjust the resolution at all. iPhone XR images are shot at 12 megapixel JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb.

That is a great point. Believe it or not its actually the opposite. From a user experience point of view the designers decided that the selfie camera would show you a mirror like view of your image in selfie mode. this is what you are used to seeing if you look in a mirror. Once you press the shutter, however, it is felt that mirroring is no longer necessary or desirable. The final photo will be returned to the correct, unflipped composition, because that is what the camera 'saw'. That final image is what you really looked like at the moment the photo was taken if someone else had taken the photo of you with the front facing camera. Now if you want you can flip it to mirrored view but your'll need to download an app like Adobe Photoshop express that lets you flip images......

unfortunately not, its got a focal length that is much like a 35mm lens so its kind of mid/wide. Ultra wide has just become available on the new iPhone 11. So if you have an XR you can't shoot really wide. The only thing you can do is use the panorama mode to get wide shots, takes a bit more effort but does the job if you need to get more in the scene.

Do you mean wide angle photos to get more interior in the scene? The lens on the XR is a medium length lens so doesn't really go wide. The best you can do is use the pano mode as explained at about the 12 minute mark of the video. The iphone 11 which just came out is the first in the Apple range to offer ultra wide for single shot wide angle photos.

The iPhone Camera App will flip automatically. Its showing you your image in preview mode as you would see yourself in a mirror then flips the final image to show you form the perspective of a camera pointing at you. However if you want to flip it, tap on edit and then the crop tool and use the top icon to flip. There is an app called Mirror that does the flip for you while taking the photo, so you can download that to have it done automatically.

Why do some people say to set it to 24 fps instead of 60?

Great question, 24fps is the frame rate the films are shot at so it is said that your video would have a more natural film like look if you use this frame rate. 30fps is commonly associated with Video and TV. Most people would not tell the difference between these two. But both are suited to face to camera, people and static scenes in general. 60fps is for faster action type video of cars, sports etc. Then you move up to slow motion at 120 and 240 which is for action video that you want to slow down in editing later. So the best frame rate depends on what you are shooting. I use 24fps for all my videos on the channel which are of me talking and demonstrating tech and then bump it up to 60 for action videos. Occasionally I'll shoot face to camera at 30fps and it looks fine.

This is the way it has been designed to work. It takes the image as though someone took the photo of you and therefore flips it from what you are seeing in the selfie preview. So you can change it by tapping on the photo in the camera roll once taken, tap on edit on the top right of the screen tap on the third icon at the bottom which is the crop tool. Then at the top left of the screen there is a flip horizontal option next to the rotate tool......

I guess it depends on what type of photo and what you are comparing it against. Even though the XR has a 12 Mp sensor the image sensor is quite small compared to a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. So if you export the image to a computer and look at it in photoshop it is not going to compare to the image you get out of pro cameras in any way. Photos taken in sunlight or with good interior lighting on the iPhone tend to look better than interior photos in low light conditions on the iPhone....

Yes you can lock the screen orientation in on the iPhone. Simply swipe down to the top right hand side of the screen to reveal the control centre. You'll see a whole bunch of widgets, tap on the one with the lock icon to lock your screen to portrait view.

@shehan manuranga If you go into portrait mode when taking selfie. You will notice a number at the top right corner of the screen. By default it may be set to f2.5 which makes the background blurry. Tap on it and adjust the slider under the pic preview window to anywhere between f8 and f16 and you'll notice the background comes back in focus. You can also edit this number once the photo is taken.

@@Pirromount Yeah I don't think you can adjust the resolution for images on the iPhone. Just to clarify, the photos are 72dpi in terms of dpi resolution. Pixels are 3024 x 4032, which makes a 12Mp images.

When using the camera app to record video the only option is to stop the recording. The you would have to put the edit together in a video editor such as iMovie which is a free app that apple provide.

You can shoot that at either 4k60 or 4k30. The resolution is equally high on both settings. The only benefit of going with 4k60 is that it can be smoother for fast moving objects and panning shots. Also it can be slowed down in editing for more natural looking slow motion, which you probably wouldn’t need to do with concert footage.

Well not really, the iPhone XR has only the one lens. You can zoom in by pinching on the screen but this is a digital zoom effect so not as good in terms of quality compared to the new iPhone 11 and 12 which have 2-3 lenses at different lengths for wide angle and close up zoom shots.

The iPhone XR only has a single lens. So the portrait mode does not zoom in like it does on the XS or the newer iPhone 11 or 12. So if you use portrait mode on the XR you still get the background blur effect but on a wider lens. So you would need to get in closer for a zoomed in look when using the XR.

It shouldn't be blurry. A couple of things you could try. One, try cleaning front lens element with damp cloth. Two make sure that if you have a protective case it is not getting in the way. Three before you take the photo tap on the screen on the point you want to focus on and then take the photo.

You know what, there is no settings in IOS at the moment to change the resolution of your photos. You can change the video resolution but not photos. The default res on an image out of the XR is 4032x3024 pixels resolution at 72dpi. It is a 3.2Mb file. So if you want to make them smaller you can email them and use the built in image scale option when you send an email, it asks you in the last step to send image at full res or mid or low res. You can also get some 3rd party image editing apps that provide image scaling....

I would like to understand how to save images from the Internet using my iPhone XR via Google/images. I keep getting lost with Google Lens and the screenshotting aspect of it. Thank you!

Why does iPhoneXR cannot pause when taking a Video?

You know what, the built in Camera App on the iPhone still doesn't have this feature so when you tap to pause the video it stops it completely and you have tap on record again to start a new recording. There may be a third party app that can do it, otherwise you can bring all recordings into iMovie and put them together as a single clip. Good information. However, I'm trying to find out why my iPhone 6 stopped taking hd photos. The wide lens. It has gone to square and leaves a huge black space on both sides. Like I took a pic vertically. Which no one uses. Hope you can help.

That is strange, so when you go into the camera app, can you still select between photo and square modes in the slide menu just above the shutter. If you can and it shot the square image in Photo mode then it sounds like a bug of some kind, in which case i would say you may need to update the OS?

@@Touchtechnologyreview Thank you. It wasn't the camera app at all. You know what it was I was seeing a portrait, but taking a landscape or wide shot. So the fix is in the menu where the short cuts are like a flashlight. It is the portrait orientation lock: On. I guess I hit it when using the flashlight yesterday. So I was taking a picture today in horizontal and when I looked at the picture it was verticle. huh!

I'd like to use my iPhone XR to take Etsy product photos. When I tried it recently, Etsy told me that my photos were not at least 2000 pixels. Is it possible to get the recommended resolution using my iPhone camera? Thanks!

Hi Karen, The image size of the photos on the XR are 3024 by 4032 pixel so should well and truly meet the specification required by ETSY. So it is possible that you are not sharing the full res image. Are you uploading directly to the ETSY App from your camera roll. Or emailing to a computer then uploading? If emailing be sure that you are not reducing the file size. When you email an attachment it will give you an option and you select the actual size image at 3.1MB.

TikTok are 9x16 format and no higher res than SD. So you can shoot it the 720p mode. If you are editing in iMovie export out as mp4 and should be fine to upload.

You can tap on edit photo and adjust the aperture setting on the top right hand corner of the screen from f1.4 up to f11 to make it sharper.

The 60 FPS option when I’m shooting 4K generates when inspected in Windows 10 a file where the FPS count is 60.02, any idea why?

Windows might have its own way of calculating the frame rate that varies to iOS file. It is essentially 60FPS. If you open it up in a video editor such as Premiere Pro or Davinci Resolve, it will probably say 60FPS exacly.

These settings are not available in iOS 13 itself. However you can download a range of apps which allow you to adjust ISO, aperture and shutter speed. I'll cover it soon on the channel!

Yes it has auto focus and you can touch the screen to pin point your focus to any object.

That is unusual, the iphone tries to white balance the shot and give you the most natural colour for the scene. Check that you haven't tapped on the filter icon on the top right hand corner depicted by 3 colour circles intersecting. If you have, use the slider and go back to original. If the filter wasn't on then you can edit the photo after taken and reduce the blue tone by adjusting the colour sliders.

Not sure, It should only take one pic. Make sure that you are in regular photo mode or portrait mode then try tapping on the timer.

you're welcome. There is no white balance setting in the provided camera app itself. There are quite a few apps that do it. One of which is called manual.

Do you recommend recording in 4K with 128gb storage on the XR. I am worried it could fail it up to fast.

With 128GB you can record in 4k and get quite a bit of video. 1 hour of video shot in 4k might take up 12GB. So if you end up shooting more than 8 or so hours you will need to offload it at some point either to iCloud or using the photos app to get it across to a computer for back up.
