Kalimba Beginner 1year progress, Self-learning (What’s the difference?) l 칼림바 독학 1년 (두 칼림바는 뭐가 다를까?)

I have learned a kalimba by myself for a year. (I make my music sheet, too.) It's a video of my 1 year progress. I recorded that in detail. Actually, I have used 'mbira style' and 'the original' and I also described the difference of two kalimbas.
I hope it'll be helpful to beginners!

I got mine a week ago and it took me about two hours to master the first ten seconds of a song. The next ten seconds went a lot faster, and the next even more so. It really is exponentially growth, once you start getting the feel for the instrument things click into place.

I got my kalimba from my aunt, who gave it to me as a Christmas gift. At first, I didn't know what it was. Heck, I didn't even know kalimbas existed. That night, I was very attached to it. I played around with it, and being a piano player myself, I found that it was like an inverted piano. I got the original one, with the keys spreading out at the sides, not lined up. I am self taught, using only my ear-playing piano knowledge and the kalima covers of songs online to help me out. Hey, I'm currently teaching my cousins (note, they are OLDER than me) to play "You are my sunshine" (I did the keys myself thanks to my ears) on my kalimba. Like my piano self, I don't use more than one key (because my brain cannot find pairs for the notes) and do the chords for my favorite songs. (most of them anyway, sometimes I neep help :p) I am currently looking back and forth across the room from my laptop to my kalimba. I know what must be done. *owo intensifies*

I can't get over how graceful she is playing kalimba. I've never seen prettier hands in my life. I was like woah....she could be a hand double in a major Hollywood film or model jewelry for Cartier.....most of all...the music is so beautiful! Her cat is like super soothed and loves it. The Kalimba was my first instrument and it really was the best choice I could make. Even someome who can´t read notes can learn how to play it pretty fast. Of course every instrument needs patience but it´s definitely eas to get nice sounding music out of it, even if you just improvise.

@@manalodedra6910 Yes I self-learned and I simply looked at Kalimba-songs on youtube that I personally liked and that didn´t seem to be too difficult for a beginner. Gladly there are some Kalimba-youtubers who write the tabs in their videos, therefore it was easier to follow it.

I just bought a kalimba and I just learned elvis cant help falling in love in about 40 minutes, And i bought I guess the advanced kalimba cause it didn't look like that one in the beginning of your video, but the one from a year later. I love it. Would rather learn on the advanced kalimba over relearning on another kalimba in the future.

@@annalilyfranklin I watch a KZbin channel called Y kalimba. it's almost like the layout for piano and it's super easy to follow. I dont like actual sheet music so I do it the lazy way haha. have fun with it!!!

it is not advanced or what you may call it. she only arranged the kalimba from before to what she is used to like the arrangement of the one in a piano but she returned it to its original form several months later

That’s so inspiring!! I’m just at the start and it’s so much harder than I thought it would be. Having trouble staying motivated to practice. But this video really helps to keep on going. Is it the same Kalimba all the way through? My top notes don’t ring clear and i wonder if it’s the kalimba itself (I’ve got a Donner)....or maybe it’s just my technique?

I believe she's playing Hugh Tracy kalimbas I could be wrong. But the higher notes to sound better on the higher quality more expensive kalimbas. The high notes also sound better when you get a Kalimba that is in a lower key.

I have two kalimbas, a gecko and a generic one (I don't think it has a brand name). There's a huge difference when it comes to the higher notes, the gecko is much better. So yes, I think the instrument might be the cause...

Having purchased a Gecko kalimba, since the higher-note tines are the same width as the lower ones, they don't resonate as easily. If I apply more force when playing them it helps, but in particular the highest two notes have almost no reverberation to them.

I've had a Kalimba for about a month. It was a fun toy at first. I haven't yet made any groundbreaking progress, but it is already much more than a toy to me. It's super tough initially because I have giant thumbs and the Gecko I bought, 17 note aside, is SO tiny. I've had to alter my approach to have any fun. Catch a buzz and go at it! Don't be afraid to pluck more notes than one at a time, especially if you have big hands/fingers. What I play is glorious nonsense. I feel like Peter and Louis after smoking and thinking they sound like Jefferson Airplane! I'm now bent on acquiring a larger Kalimba, maybe then I can play one note at a time. **PSA...this thing may induce Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
