A walk through on starting up the cessna 402. Some items may be different from you company proceedures and the POH however all items are completed nevertheless.
I hope you enjoy this video as it is my first and i plan to make many more in the near future.
I would appreciate any feed back on the video how it could be improved.
I plan to make a complete walkthrough on the 402 rangeing from normal to emergency proceedures as well as IFR flight namely for Australian airspace.
I hope you find this interesting and i look forward to your comments.

I've flown some sketchy birds but that cockpit looked rough.I hope the rest of it was in better shape.

Cessna 402C mechanic here. Good showing on how to start it up! I don't use quite as much primer as you did here. (I cut it off around 70-80). But it worked perfectly fine, didn't hear any afterfiring. So all is well!

Damn, I can’t remember doing all other things except starting the engines and pushing the throttle to get it to move on the way to runway then to take off! I did that in a Cessna 401A as a 13 years old waaaay back in 1975 under supervision of my dads good friend Paul. It was waaaaay long time ago. I did a take off and landed the 401A which is similar to 402C on my own with Paul watching me on co pilot seat at a Kenosha Airport only a one way around trip. Thanks for the showing it on video. It brings me memories.

Thanks for the Video. It sure brings good memories of a Cessna 402B that I flew years ago.

The alternators remain on for normal battery start, however are turned off when started with external power. The POH has you starting the left engine first since it's closer to the battery, however in many cases the battery is moved to the nose for CG purposes.

@quiteactually The chief engineer of one company I flew for also instructed us to start the engines with the alternators off. His reason was that the battery was the cheapest part of the starter system so it was better to start the engines with the alternators off rather than risk damaging them during the start.

Of course it's filthy, it's UBZ ! I was looking at this and thought it reminded me of that aircraft; in the other video ... there was the callsign 😱 I flew that 2005-6 in Darwin. It used to be owned by MAF in Arnhemland for their RPT prior to 2005, and it flew there for years. I think they cleaned it once. We got it after they sold it and it was the only aircraft ever where I've washed my hands when I climbed out of it, and I then spent about 4 hours cleaning it, and it wasn't too bad. This video was taken in 2011, 6 years later. The thing had returned to it's prior state so I guess it's just a dirt magnet. I wonder where it is now.

lol... I just checked, it looks like it's still kicking around Alice Springs (as of the 22nd Feb according to Flight Aware). I'm sure it still hasn't been cleaned 😂

@@ipilot84 I think ChartAir has it, so it will probably be there forever. Their fleet looks pretty much the same as it did in 2006.

@cessna207 The battery in a C402 is in the left wing root. Therefore, it is a shorter run for the electrical lead from the battery to the left engine and there is less resistance.

i grew up in 402 and 421 flying with my old man. only different thing he did was throttles were full open and reduced as the engine came to life . his reason is smoother quicker start and the other throttle is out of the way

Hi Stefano, I did have plans on making a whole range of videos on the 402 but shortly after making these two videos I left the company to work for a bigger and better company. I have made a number of videos on the dash 8 but due to company restrictions I can't publish them on the internet. Maybe one day

@camilogrillo Cheers, I plan on doing more soon, I'm not flying the C402 anymore but will soon be flying a Dash8. I will do some Dash8 videos, it will be my personal version of a cockpit video similar to IITV videos. I should have some in the next 6 months or so.

@quiteactually, I'm also curious as to why some engine types are started with alternators off as opposed to on? Even though the POH for the 402 says to have them on for engine start, our engineers always instructed pilots to start with the alternators off and turn them on after start. I always assumed it was to avoid overloading the alternator as the second engine was started, as a precaution.

Aero Plane how well can the 402b fly with one engine, especially during takeoff? Just curious.

Has anyone got some views on the Alternators and if they should be left off for start and then turned on or should they be on during the start? The POH states they are on during start, some people think they should stay off, anyone got some advice or opinions?

Why does it take so long for the oil pressure to rise after start? The oil temp is understandable, but I would think you should get near immediate oil pressure increase.

@cessna207 Usually most twin engine light aircraft are started on the right engine first, I believe this is due to the position of the engine in relation to the pilot, its harder for the pilot to see the engine in some cases and if there was an engine fire or abnormality the pilot would be able to hear the engine. With the C402 the engines are in front of the pilot and easy to see, the left is started first because the wiring from the battery to the left engine is shortest.

Hey guy's, sorry I have not had a chance to make more video's yet, I've moved on from my 402 job. I'm flying for a regional airline in Aus, its been flat out. When I get a chance I'll try make some more tech videos on the dash 8-400, The company has a policy of no cameras during flight in the flight deck but I'll see what i can come up with. Shouldn't take to long to get some videos happening. Thanks for being patient
