Well done, and very informative presentation. I just completed replacing my HDD with an iFlash + SD card and a new battery. Hardest part was opening the 4th gen iPod. Be careful when attaching the cable to the iFlash. I bent two of the pins in the cable, but managed to straighten them out. I have two more classic iPods I plan to mod. It’s kinda fun! 👍👍👍👍

Hello. I am looking forward to the next video in this series. I would like to ask you if you know what I can do to fix the 30-pin connector on my iPod. When I connect the cable it starts to charge, but after a few seconds it stops. To avoid this I have to put any element on the cable to press diagonally
@TheRepairLair3 жыл бұрын
Hi! you might want to fully disassemble the ipod, take out the motherboard and inspect the socket connection to the motherboard - the most likely problem is solder joints cracking on the connector pins. If you know how to solder, should be an easy fix.

worked first try ;). formatted to fat32, and used a windows computer to restore. There is, however, a weird screeching/groaning sound coming from the ipod whenever I use the controls (scroll or press buttons), which goes away as soon as I dock it or turn on the backlight, and starts again as soon as I play music. Its definitely not the hard drive since it's present even after the flash mod. Seems to be coming from the clicker speaker, but I really can't tell it just seems to be coming from inside.
@TheRepairLair Жыл бұрын
happy to know you managed successfully! Very strange to hear about the noises as i haven't experienced this. I guess it could be some coil noise from power circuitry, but unlikely, knowing that it goes away when the backlight turns on. Have you replaced the battery too?
@randomchannel252 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRepairLair yeah it could be a capacitor or something like that. I actually haven't replaced the battery because the one still in it, surprisingly, still holds multiple hours of charge. I will try installing a replacement battery and see if that helps.
@TheRepairLair Жыл бұрын
@@randomchannel252 Please let us know if it fixes it!
@randomchannel252 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRepairLair After replacing the battery, the noise is indeed gone. When I first powered it up after the installation, however, it was still making the sounds. But after a couple plays and trips on and off the charger, it was gone for good. The battery that was taken out is indeed the original battery to the ipod (dated 2004 on the label). I'm surprised that the original battery still holds charge that well. I think despite the fact that the battery held a decent charge, it was bad in some way that caused the screeching. The screeching was definitely caused by the battery, but definitely wasn't coming from the battery itself.

Request: Can you convert the hold switch into a power switch that’s connected directly to the battery? I’ve upgraded every one of my 3rd generation iPods. HDD adapters and CF to SD card adapters are extremely hit or miss. My last ipod mod went well but the upload speeds were soooooo slow, like two minutes per song. I decided to finally cave in and buy the iFlash adapter and HDD converter. I’ve spend enough money on bad adapters. I especially hate it when I rebuy an adapter from amazon but get a slightly different version.

I'll look into the request, but no promises - lots of stuff in the pipeline but no time to do any of it!

I used to convert 3rd and 4th Generation ipods to flash drive using the three adapters until a couple of years ago when unless I used a iflash cf to sd converter the ipods would only restore correctly using a mac computer on my windows laptop I'd connect to iTunes click on restore it would then restore but on restore present the bad folder sign and iTunes would show it as faulty and needing restore never working just repeating unless I plugged it into my old mac book where they worked first time or as I said earlier worked ok with the Iflash converter but for resale they are too dear ( but excellent quality and always work ) I've tried all the Chinese cf converters none worked for me they used to but not anymore, so works (for me) on ios but not windows I kept one as I have software on my windows laptop that lets me use ios configured ipods but to sell the ipods its better if they're running windows as it connects to ios without any problems, long rambling message I know but any ideas why

256 will not work. The limit is 20gb but some have gotten to 64gb. 64gb can make the iPod glitchy. 256gb will just make it stop working

Hello, first I thank you for all the informations from the 1. and 2. video, it helped me to get my ipod start after 15 years! But there is one problem with Charging, i only have 30 pin cable with USB, so I can´t charge the Ipod in normal way. Would you give me some advice how to charge it or modificate it to charge via USB? i would very appreciate it! Thank you!
@TheRepairLair2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment - i have planned to make a part 3 of these series where i modify the ipod to charge via standard usb. It is to install a 5v to 12v boost converter and connect that to the 12v input - i've tested that and it works, but i have not yet managed to film the process, sorry. I do still plan to film and share how to do that eventually.

I got a 3gen classic, bought the firewire and power block, every time I to charge it and start it, the apple comes up, then it squeeks, and the logo flips and goes to a menu. Try to restart it from menu, gibberish, then same menu. Ordered a battery to replace as first step. Thanks for the videos, I have hope.
@TheRepairLair5 ай бұрын
if you have a usb cable, i would recommend trying to fully reset the ipod, it sounds like some files might be corrupted. I'm not sure a bad battery would cause this.

@@TheRepairLair Thanks for the feedback. I have tried plugging in a USB and putting it on my computer, it wont even read and i Tunes wont recognize it. Pretty sure I will be changing it to SD, need to get the adapter etc ordered. I have watched several vids including yours on doing the switch, getting my confidence up.
