I also went the archive route, but I checked 2004 since that's when the 40GB model shown was manufactured. It was only $399 by then. Nobody was paying $1,000 for small electronics back then! Even a few hundred bucks for a base iPod was regarded as way overpriced by many.

I bought a 40Gb in 2003. I can't overstate how revolutionary it was to carry all your music with you. I had a Belkin FM transmitter on it and every radio I had was tuned to it. My music literally followed me more seamlessly than it does today. Bluetooth is better but FM was idiot proof. It's hard to be impressed by tech in the way the iPod was impressive. Everyone had portable audio and everyone had lots of physical media at home. And everyone had to choose what to carry around with them and what to play at any one time because changing took time. The iPod completely upended that forever. Its on-demand access to all your music foreshadowed streaming access to *all the music*. I'm now looking back to resurrecting my dead 3rd Gen. It caught the click of death after about three years of intense daily use. With no tutorials of any kind online at the time I made a hole in the touchwheel trying to open it. I'm encouraged to see new batteries, storage and boost convertors available to give the poor battered thing some new life.

4 years late, but anyway I just repaired the same gen 3 classic iPod and the easiest way to restore is via USB on either XP or Windows 7 with Apple's iPod Updater, 2005-03-23 for Windows (it has all the firmware, so no internet needed), worked flawlessly, just restore then plug into power socket via firewire brick, exit disk mode and reboot while plugged in. No faffing around in disk utility with old/newer macs, which all failed or wanted to use firewire.

For my own footnote. I still use the older iPod Mini (2004-2005). I absolutely LOVE the thing and will keep it forever. Upgraded the drive to an SSD (64 or 128, I forgot). New battery and Rockbox'ed it. Sound is amazing. Have countless extras for parts. It's easy to work on, reliable. The only minor thing about it that I do not like is that cable that connects the MB to the HD is delicate and can get damaged. Even when ordering that cable off of eBay, I have received damaged ones. Beyond that, it is a perfect device.

As old as you are? Man, I'm old. I bought a 20GB 3rd gen iPod in 2004. I still have it and it's in near mint condition. I've replaced the battery twice in it. It's no longer my daily music player (I have a 7th gen and my iPhone for that), but I still really like the look and feel of it. The 40GB model was $399 US in 2004. My 20GB model was $299 and came with a case, the dock, the remote, and all the accessories.

Nice restoration :) I've been watching DankPods as well and the phrase "someone's been in here before" rings bells! I had a problem (once before) with one of those adapters on my Philips 20GB media player. I'll have another look at it at some point to see if I can get it working (not that I need to bother with the Philips as its original 20GB IDE HDD works OK). Also, thanks to watching your videos, DankPods videos, and a video fron Budget Builds Official (all about iPods), I bought myself an 80GB iPod Classic (can't remember which generation). It's a great device - all I need to do is transfer my music on it via Itunes, as being a Windows PC user, I've been predominantly using Windows Media Player.

@3:40 - RE: OS Restore. The 3rd Gen iPod I bought new here in Canada back in the day , and still have to this day, came with a cable that was USB 2.0 and Firewire. You plugged the Firewire into the charge brick and the USB 2.0 into the computer for sync. Made just about everything about it a pain in the butt. Glad that by the time I got my iPhone 3GS that replaced carrying around 2 devices, that Apple had overcome this restriction.

I think many users in the 2003 era would have not been able to fill 40GB of space. Not only were the only files available from Apple (in ITunes default mode) in AAC, they were only 128kb. When you buy music now in AAC, the smallest files are 256kb.

The buzzing sound is either a short or a grounding issue...test for continuity and check if something has gotten inside the charging port. Then try bathing the board in isopropyl alcohol and scrub it with a soft bristle tooth brush to get rid of anything debris on the board...then heat it to about 100c with a heatgun(avoid the plastic bits as much as you can and focus on the memory module..you also can try 200c to reflow the solder)....good luck!

I bought a second hand iPod 3rd gen a few months back and was having the same issue with syncing and what not - easiest way to get it to work with my late 2012 iMac (slim) was via the Thunderbolt 1 port. You need the Apple Thunderbolt 1 to Firewire 800 adapter and a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 adapter (just make sure you get the right Apple adapter for the Thunderbolt port as Thunderbolt 1 and 2 look like Mini DP while Thunderbolt 3 looks like USB C) So it goes like this: iMac/Macbook Thunderbolt port (female) > Thunderbolt (male) to FireWire 800 (female) adapter > FireWire 800 (male) to FireWire 400 (female) adapter > iPod cable with FireWire 400 (male) I can't remember if the Thunderbolt port also passes enough power to charge the iPod but I think it did
