As a Mexican-American I used to see myself as a Mexican until I went to Mexico and saw how different we really were. The different kinds of Mexicans in Mexico were way more diverse then those in the US. There were Mexicans that I could relate to, Mexicans I didn’t know existed, Mexicans similar to the ones back home but better, and Mexicans that looked South American. I have come to see a lot of the Mexicans born in the US as inferior versions of those in Mexico. I guess the children born to those who can’t survive in their own country are already on a lower starting point. Although, I must say, those who immigrate to the US aren’t all bad. Some were just born into a poor environment where school wasn’t valued. If they have a sharp mind it will show. But even if they do, they are a minority. The majority are just going to the US because they have been told it will provide them a better life. Then their children end up like them but worse. They either lose the hardworking attitude their parents have and become bums. Or they maintain that hard working attitude but lose the frugal nature and spend a great deal of money on materialistic items that don’t better their lives. Since Mexico is filled with Mexicans, it is more concentrated with those who are intelligible and capable. The US mainly has the poor kind that come from farms. There are few Mexican-Americans that aren’t clouded by all the US garbage instilled into their brains and actually benefit from being born there. But they are also the minority. I plan to go to college in Mexico because it is cheaper. Then work in the US because I will get paid more. When I grow old I will retire to Mexico because the cost of living is less. Use your birth to your advantage. Don’t be corrupted by the garbage dreams you see in rap songs. Stop thinking about garbage like mustangs and brand clothes. And having a nice house right away. Focus on saving most of your wealth so you can retire faster. If you want to spend, spend on experiences. Travel by yourself, or with friends and family. Widen your knowledge of the world and different cultures. You never know, something you pick up in a different country may shatter your worldview and change the way you live and think for ever. Learn, Read, Travel, and Explore. Better yourself and don’t stay in the shitty categories that can be placed on a lot of Mexican Americans. Travel and become a different version of yourself. About plantains, at least in Chile, most people didn't know about until a couple years ago. When a lot of colombian and venezuelan people started migrating into Chile. Before that, it was rare to listen to someone mention plantains.
