Well, this is weird. What are all these squiggles? Those peaks represent the wavelengths of infrared light that don't get to the detector, because there's some functional group in the sample absorbing them. Professor Dave busts out some dance moves in this one. Do the symmetric stretch!

Depending on where you are Scientists may use the opposite. Here we invert it, instead of dips we use peaks. Otherwise it's the same

It's 12:36am and I have my chem final at 9 tomorrow morning and I'd been flipping through my textbook and noticed IR spectroscopy, which I've never seen before, but which definitely will be on the final...so I'd just like to take this time to thank you for saving me about an hour of trying to understand this just from a textbook. Thanks for saving me time and energy!

finally , a concise explanation on why graphs show transmission and a reference to the detector - looking for this has been killing me , and yet a 10 minute video explained better than i could find after 20 minutes searching, thanks Professor Dave - you're a real lifesaver !

Thank you so much Professor Dave! I read about this in an MCAT prep book... If we ran a spectroscopy of my understanding, it would have demonstrated 0% absorption. After watching your video I have a much better understanding of how this process works! Thank you again!
