When it comes to the choice of ir vs venir in Spanish, the rules are much clearer than in English.
In English, we regularly use "to go" and "to come" interchangeably, but we can't do this with "ir" and "venir" in Spanish. This means we have to learn the pattern for these verbs in Spanish and practice it.
In this video, you'll learn:
- When we should use "ir" and when we should use "venir"
- How we can think about these verbs using two mental models
- A common use that could be seen as an exception or not, it depends on your perspective.

So what do you think? Do you think "venir conmigo" matches the normal pattern or should be considered an exception?

Since the person you accompany is going some place and is not at the destination, it probably should be considered an exception. Perhaps, I wouldn't call it an exception but rather "a particular case". Thanks so much for your videos and articles, they are really useful and always seem to "guess" what words I'm going to have trouble with! (An educated guess, I am sure!!)

Your videos are so helpful and also bring me a feeling of back home in Australia when you talk! I live in Madrid and I hardly speak Spanish, understand some since my husband is Italian and it’s similar but your videos are so clear and helpful! Thank you

Perhaps it follows the normal pattern since it appears to beckon the other person albeit there is no specific destination. Very interesting lesson and has helped clarify some confusion in my brain on this topic. I'm sure I'm not the only one benefitting greatly with these short videos.

Gracias por un video muy ayudable como siempre... Estoy pensando, si le estás pidiendo a alguien que "venga conmigo", ya eres el destino. Así que "venir" es el verbo correcto.

I always felt that using "go" and "come" interchangably in English was bad English. To me, "go" means leaving or enroute to a place and "come/came" means has arrived/ enroute at/to a place. It depends on the perspective. If I were in my house I would say "John is coming here". If I were in John's house I would say "I am going home". Makes sense?

Without sounding too vulgar, I was just wondering about how Spanish speakers would express themselves during the act of intercourse. For example we all know what a person might yell out in english during an highly excitable phase. In French, the expression used is "J'arrive" or I am arriving. So I imagine that in Spanish it most likely has nothing to do with the verb venir. No this isn't a joke, I am seriously curious.

Venir in Spanish, definitely. And in French? Remember Jane Birkin: Non, maintenant, viens...

In Spanish we use two verbs for this, one of them (and the most common) is "venirse", and the other one (a bit less common) is "correrse".So, "me vengo!" means "I'm cumming!" , and "Me corrí" means the same (in the past).Excuse me for being vulgar, but I wanted to answer to your doubt LOL
