Great video! I’m all ears! 😄 By the way, do you know how to say ‘I’m all ears’ in Spanish? I produce videos centered around everyday Spanish conversations, adding a humorous touch. My goal is to make learning enjoyable and effortless through simple and funny dialogues. Here’s an example of one I made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5KrdZuQq5utorc

I've found what makes this concept easier for me to understand is to think of "ser" as a *characteristic* of something, something that defines a thing, and "estar" as the *state* of something, its condition, like.... if im sad, I'm "estoy triste", I'm in a *state* of sadness, I'm not saying i'm sad just all the time as in my personality. my *characteristic* is that i have brown hair, for example, it's a part of me, so. you know, its a defining thing. not sure which one you'd use if you dyed your hair though. idk, just thought id post this to see if it helps anyone. its kinda tricky at first, but, i find that going through those examples in the video and saying to myself "in spanish, this thing is a characteristic, not a state" or the other way around really helped it "click" to me. like, the "where is the bathroom" example. where it is, is the state of the bathroom, not its characteristic. thats just its location within a house, its characteristic would maybe be if it was painted blue, or red, or pink, or something.

Awesome video for picking up the essentials! If you’re learning Spanish and want to see how these key words and phrases come to life in real (and funny) conversations, I’ve been creating short dialogues to make it easier and more fun.

tal vez ya te lo hayan dicho, pero "yo que sé" normalmente es un poco brusco o rudo, como quién dice "no me molestes", "no me preguntes", "no me importa"

Thanks so much for this and yr other excellent explanatory videos. I have been giving the use of the passive Se a lot of thought and want to pass along another way thinking about it based on my long ago grammar classes in school. A passive construction means that the subject is not acting itself but is acted upon. For example - The house was constructed, “Se construyó la casa; The water was shut off, “Se apagó el agua”. The subject is passive, not performing the action but is being acted upon. I just thought this might be useful to some others who enjoy yr videos!

I am planning a trip to Latin America soon and I would like to know if most Native Spanish speakers talk this fast? Estoy planeando un viaje a América Latina pronto y me gustaría saber si la mayoría de los hablantes nativos de español hablan tan rápido.

I love your channel. Just a curiosity. The Alchemist was originally written in Portuguese. Paulo Coelho is Brazilian. I don't mean to say that the reference is invalid. It's just that the book you read in Spanish is probably a translation from Portuguese to Spanish.

Thanks for this encouragement! I'm 60 and started learning Spanish with a college class in the Fall 2024 semester. When I was in college, I got to C1 in German as an undergrad, and then to C1 in French as a grad student. In this college class for Spanish, I was by far the oldest but I found little difference in my memory and the 19 year-olds. The big difference was that I had so many years of learning foreign languages behind me, I had learned how to learn a language. I am past the beginner problems of translating directly from English, not being mindful of idioms, not knowing the patterns unique to English, etc. So, I would suggest that maybe those of us who are older need that fluid intelligence less because we have so much more crystalized intelligence to fall back on.

I read "I am studying medicine for my parents " as "I am studying medicine in order to please my parents", which is another way it could be para. Also, "El hace todo por y para ella" I think translates pretty well literally as "He does everything because of and for her"

As always, great video... but please don't avoid details because of annoying people complaining. Saying "it doesn't matter / it's not important" and not explaining is much more frustrating. The other people can just skip the video ahead. Anyways, thanks again.

My Spanish is really weird because my pronunciation is excellent, I know a lot of phrases and vocabulary so I can also read books in Spanish. But my ability to understand people and verb conjugation is poor. I actually have to pronounce things like a gringo so people do not think my Spanish is better than it is.

And that's why I LOVE ENGLISH. The Dinner Party test - that's a perfect example. It doesn't matter if you are British, American, Australian, Scottish, etc. You will be able to understand each other. Apart from the accent, which might be a bit of a problem, English is English, and that's what matters! I am a Brazilian woman living in Portugal. Both Brazil and Portugal speak the "same" language, or so it seems. But it almost feels like I'm living in a country with a foreign language. The grammar, vocabulary, and accent are so different sometimes that it's a wonder we can understand each other and have a conversation at all.

Good analysis! As an ageing cynic/realist, I think a lot of the immersion/comprehensible input hype is due to how easy it is to make YT videos promoting it. And people love to hear that there's some easy method to learn where you don't even need to get away from your screen! The part I don't get is: how can you be confident in your speaking, when all you do is listen and watch? For me, learning Spanish, my accent was appalling! It took many 1 to 1 lessons to correct my speaking errors. And pronounciation is vital for communicating. I've found that 9 times out of 10, when my bumbling Spanish is not understood, it's not that I'm saying the wrong words. It's my pronounciation. I repeat with more care in speaking, and it's fine, I'm understood. But as I said, it took 1 to 1 lessons practicing with a human tutor to understand that. I think for many, maybe especially as we age, we do need that active interraction. Comprehensible input is great for maintenance though, as you say.
