Ira Glass from This American Life talking about story telling. Part 2, How hard it is to find decent stories and abandon crap. This episode focuses on how much time it takes to look for and find interesting stories. It also focuses on when to throw away crap and move on...a very important lesson.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing this. The old video I linked to get removed somehow. Cool to see Ira Glass sharing his wisdom.

Thank you Ira Glass!!! "All video production is TRYING to be crap." "The moment you put something on tape, it is trying to be bad." "you have to prop it up aggressively at every stage of the way, if it's gonna be any good." This guy is a amazing and I had never looked at it like this before. Thank you warphotography

It's hard to find great stories... that the commercial media will agree to air, that the sponsors will agree to sponsor, that investors will agree to fund... but there is no shortage of great compelling stories. Dr. Derek Muller likes to expose the public's misconceptions about physics, but someone who would like to expose people's misconceptions about politics, capitalism, socialism, why we go to war, these people are up against powerful people who disseminate these misconceptions deliberately, whose PR machines create the misconceptions for the public's consumption, because they can profit greatly from these misconceptions. There are so many great stories that are overlooked as source material because producers know who runs the world. Even if you succeed in finding and conveying a great story, if it's one the powerful people don't want talked about, the misconception profiteers can convince the public not to even watch your story, and/or they can precondition the public to view your work with severe skepticism.

so for fiction, "abandoning crap" mindset would be making different stories (in whatever medium) for some length (let's arbitrarily say 3-5 chapters) and deciding if that week's creation is crap or worth pursuing. I'll also add something (that I think is useful in this context): you don't need to delete the story by completely destroying the file. You can just put it in a junk heap file, and come back if you feel like there was something good that can be used for a different story. Basically plagiarize yourself

What's interesting is that this video doesn't follow the rules it describes AND YET it is still useful and interesting...
