Good fight, both WELL past their best but gave it all they had.

I watched this fight live. It was at the Palladium in Hollywood California. Carlos Palomino was making his comeback and KOd Rene Arredondo in the 1st round. I said hi to Al Bernstein as he walked by us to get to ringside to do announcing duties for the fight. Was a great card. Coetzee was winning this fight until he tanked out. I never realized how big framed Iran Barkley is, which makes Duran's win over The Blade that much more impressive IMO.

They both should have been retired at there age it's one thing if your still in top shape they aren't there 42 and 37 years old hear.

Coetzee was a shell of his former self here and so was Barkley. However, Barkley had more left in the tank and that was the difference. Boxing is a young man's sport and Coetzee, 42 here and weighing over 250 pounds, was never going to get the job done against any half decent heavyweight. I'm glad he retired after this bout and I believe he is doing fine and well in his home country of South Africa where he works as a dental technician. 🥊

Who would believe Roberto Duran saying that he once beat Barclay who herein stops the super heavy weight Coetzer ? Truly, This fight reminds me of the forgotten Duran who started his debut in light weight n ended in super middle weight. Those dudes are truly insane indeed. Not to mention that they r still walking around now with no sign of brain concussions.

I remember the Duran/ Barkley fight. Barkley almost had Duran beaten until he dug deep and knocked Iran out. Probably Duran's last great fight.

​@@Sky-ee1bf sorry, but you must have watched a different fight. The one I saw, Duran was in control for all of the fight, bar 2 occasions where Barclay caught him. When Duran went to town, he destroyed Barclay with lethal combinations. And afterwards, as was usual for him, Duran went to his back hotel room and Barclay went to hospital.

This was the end of gerry coetzee weighing 2 53 instead of his 2 20 fighting weight, also made a big mistake of chasing Larry Holmes instead of defending his title in the first 4 months. By the time he got Greg Page he was ring rust. Bad manegment, you big payday will come.

Yeah, Iran Barkley was also very old and VERY overwieght, somewhat of a battle of the nursing home here.

Gerrie was a natural boxer with a piston-like left jab. At 250lbs+ and all all the crap in his life (see below), this fight should never have happened. (1) Asthma (could not go beyond 8-10 rounds (like DeLaHoya) (2) Loss of his dad as coach & the Toweels as replacement - tried to make him a brutal fighter & ignored his natural abilities. Toweels - they made less "sub"-naturally talented guys better by teaching them skills; stuff you can learn instead of naturally "knowing" it. For Coetzee it was NOT brute force; one of the relatively few mistakes they made

Iran was 160 pounds when he KO'd Hearns, Iran is the more out of shape of the two fighters, a swollen middlewieght.

Good job by ref Robert Byrd. Gerrie was on his way to getting himself killed in there. He was too brave for his own good by this point in time. I don't think that he could defend himself anymore, in that 10th round. Valiant effort and bravely battled through being overwhelmed by "A Younger and (Higher Fighting Stamina) Capacity man". 36 is usually alot younger than 42. Although Barkley was only a middleweight in his prime, he could've easily campaigned at Lightheavyweight, and been successfull, even during his younger fighting days. He must've been draining very excessive amounts of weight to make 160 during his prime days. He usually looked over 180 lbs while in the ring for his middleweight bouts. Barkley was a HUGE Middleweight during his prime. He likely walked around at 190 lbs during his middleweight days.

Coetzee needed to get down to 225lbs and have several tune up fights before stepping into the ring for a 12 round bout. Coetzee was a small heavyweight to begin with. He could never be a true pro at 253lbs. A few rounds at best at that weight.
