Iran elects reformist Masoud Pezeshkian as new president

The reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected as Iran's new president - after winning a run-off against a conservative hardliner - with 53% of the vote.
The former heart surgeon has promised to reach out to the West along with an end to Iran's isolation from the rest of the world.
The United States said the elections had neither been free nor fair - and said they didn't expect any fundamental change.

@Light_spot_ by the way in Persian language "an" is used for plural. So his surname is Pezishki-an. This has nothing to do with the armenian yan or ian. It would be Pezishkis in English. As per your point of azeris having armenian heritage, just check out the genetic studies of this region and you will get an answer. There were very few armenians living historically (last 400/500 years) in nowdays causasus. Azerbaijanis lived in this region from the Sassanian dynasty onwards. They used to live mostly on modern day Turkey and towards the middle east ( Siria, Iraq and others). From the genetic studies you can find on scientific papers, Azeris belong more to the caucasus region, than the Armenians (who moved there after 1800, but of course very few were living there). Yerevan in the end 1800 had a majority of Azeri population)

I really don't understand why the British media are so excited about the selection of this man. He was disqualified and banned from taking part in the ' elections ' for the Islamic parliament six months ago by the Guardian Council. That ban was rescinded on the direct orders of Khamenei. It was Khamenei who paved the way for him taking part in the elections for the presidency. This man is therefore a project, ie he has been chosen to do what he is ordered to do by the supreme leader Khamenei. For all I care, he could have been a Monarchist and it wouldn't have made a difference as the true executive power resides with Khamenei and not the president. Nothing will change particularly for Iranians and in particular teh Iranian women.
