Iran: History, Geography, Economy & Culture

This is the story of Iran, once known as Persia. In this video, I explore the long history of Iran through to the controversial present, the diverse geography of Iran of deserts and mountains, the surprisingly complex Iranian Economy and the remarkably rich Iranian culture that has influenced the world in so many ways.
A history as old and rich as any, it has endured the battering of invasions and competing influences over millennia, to survive until the present day. This is the country that spawned the world’s first great empire, the Achaemenid Empire, and despite defeat at the hands of the Macedonian Greeks under Alexander, rose again under the Parthian Empire and Sassanid Empire. It was conquered by Muslim Arabs in the 7th Century AD, and over the next 200 years the original population that practiced the home-grown religion of Zoroastrianism was converted to Islam.
During the Golden Age of Islam it became a hotbed of artistic and scientific genius, and the Iranian language, Farsi, was beautiful written down by such poets as Ferdowsi in the epic piece of Persian Poetry, the Shahnameh (Book of Kings). In later centuries, Iran struggled on, maintaining its independence under the Safavids and The Qajar Dynasty, before coming under the influence of Russia and Great Britain in the Great Game of the 19th Century.
The discovery of Iranian Oil marked further influence by Western Powers, who later installed Shah Mohammed Reza ("The Shah"), whose rule turned corrupt and autocratic. He was finally deposed in the 1979 Iranian Revolution by Ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic Republic of Iran was born. But this further continued troubles for the country, as it became internationally isolated over the Iran Nuclear Program and Iran's promise to destroy the State of Israel.
The geography of Iran comprises mostly mountains and deserts, and yet nonetheless houses a surprisingly large population of 80 million, who are mostly ethnic Persians with Azeris making up the largest minority.
Iranian culture has influenced the world with many words from the Persian language, Farsi, finding their way into English and other European languages. The games of chess and backgammon either emerged from, or were heavily shaped by Persia. And Persian carpets are regarded as the finest in the world, in a tradition that goes back millenia.

این را بدون تعارف و از صمیم قلب می‌گویم که در تاریخ شاهنشاهی ایران باستان، نخستین قدرتی که در مقابل ایران وجود داشت یونانی ها بودند و ایران و یونان به عنوان دو قدرت یرتر جهان با هم در ارتباط، تجارت، دوستی و جنگ بودند ... جنگهای زیادی بین ایرانیان و یونانیان در گرفته، اما به عنوان یک ایرانی مغرور، این را اعتراف میکنم که در بین تمامی قدرتهای رقیب ایران در طول تاریخ‌، تنها یونانیان را دوست دارم و هیچ حس کینه و بدبینی تاریخی از یونان ندارم و اتفاقا تاریخ و اساطیر یونانیان بزرگ را واقعا دوست دارم و آن را ستایش میکنم ... شما و حتی برادرانتان مقدونی‌ها ‌که به باعث سقوط پارسیها شدند، اما باعث سقوط و انحطاط فرهنگی و تاریخی ایران نشده بودند، چرا که یونانیان هم مانند اجداد من فرهنگ غنی و پیشرویی داشتند و این باعث شد بعد از شکست، جامعه ایران سقوط نکند . در دنیای باستان جنگ ها و درگیری ها بسیار زیاد است و یک حرکت طبیعی است و هیچ مشکلی نیست اما دو حمله اعراب و ترکهای مغولی هنوز هم آثار مخربشان بر کشورمان باقی مانده است . بعد از ۱۴۰۰ سال هنوز هم ایران از هجوم اعراب دچار مشکل است، چرا که اعراب واقعا سطح پایینی از فرهنگ و تمدن را داشتند و بخاطر همین است که ایرانیان و یونانیان را دوست دارم چون جنگ‌های این دو قدرت بزرگ تاریخ، در عرصه نظامی و سیاسی بود، نه برای تحمیل فرهنگی و دین و زبان خوب به ملت‌های مغلوب ..❤ امیدوارم روزی به آن شکوه و بزرگی بازگردیم💪🫶🫅👸🫅👸 جاوید و ماندگار باشند ایرانیان و یونانیان ❤

As an Iranian I should say you have done very well in setting aside all stereotypes and prejudices, making a proper neutral opinion documentary covering about 60 to 70 percent of what can be said about the country. All I can say is you are original and that is what makes you stand out. Iran is the one country and one of many wonders of the world that I believe is a place of my family has lived. I'm half-Persian on my mother's side and the stories she told me of her native homeland sounds so beautiful full of life thriving on culture and its people. One day in my lifetime I'll see this beautiful country and hopefully get to experience the things my mom never could especially my other relatives. In 1978, the universities were closed which put so many young people in the most difficult position. Without attending university, young people went through many different directions. My uncle is one of them. When I get to visit Iran, I'll be exploring and do the things he couldn't in the year of 1978. I hope as Iran's opportunity for education is the only way for all aspect of life to achieve especially now when education reaches children to engage with other peers and learn what they can do and offer as become citizens of what may be the free world. That is my hope for them.

However, my a third party point of view and from a demoratic country, Americans no matter who, what, when, and where do not take advantage of their education like they should specifically younger generations. “We” were offered already admittance to public and private education this is despite the freedom of choice and certain other freedoms “we” had because “we’re” entitled to it. In other countries, they're obligated to and even then (not speaking for anyone) what does the government have the right to take what is not simply their moral judgment who gets to have an education of not? This is an ongoing debate and most commonly discussed on many panels for education today.

Such a lovely and intelligent people... I love Persian food as well! Kobide forever! As a Korean I was amazed of the Persian epic Kushnameh. A Persian epic poem telling about a Persian prince was refuging in a ancient Korean kingdom known as Silla. He fell in love with the princess Frarang of Silla and got married and their son, the great persian hero Faridun, made a great conquering journey to revive Persia. I think there is a connection between Hwarang of Silla (warriors), Farang in Iran and the Franks in Europe. This connection needs an academic research for approval but I like my assumption. And believe there is also a connection between Irani Aryan and Korean Arirang.

As an Iranian, watching this video reminded me of my ancient roots. A feeling of admiration and respect set in in my heart. I would like to thank you for all the efforts you made for this comprehensive video. Admittedly, Irans has been wounded and invaded several times by rival empires. Also it has been plagued by ruthless and curropt dynasties and religious clergies. Its wealth and culture had been under development recently under reign of Pahlavi dynasty until horrors of 1979 reveloution dominated this country to this date. Your interpretation lacks in-depth analysis and need further clarification on the origin of the culture. It is more biased in favour of Islam which is a copy paste of so many cultures. Archeological survey can better explain the root of present Iranian people who basically belonged to Aryan culture which you don't consider. Thanks for exploring the history of lran.
