@kesofat the Iraqi chemical weapons were developed domestically. Some chemical weapons like mustard gas are pretty easy to make. Many nations sent aid to Iraq during the iran Iraq war but it was mostly in the form of economical aid, some energy infrastructure, a few forms of tech, and some 3rd party conventional weapons. The serious hardware Iraq had was purchased using some of that cash we sent but it was purchased from countries like libya. The west wanted to hurt iran but arming a temporary ally like saddam with really powerful weaponRy is dumb, even by CIA standards. It wasnt like some dictatorships the CIA backed previously, where we were keeping the soviets out, the alliance with Iraq was under the table and only for the purposes of harming Iran for only as long as hostilities lasted. Everyone knew saddam would be an enemy at one point.

My uncle died in that war. I was 6 then. All I remember about him was a kind person who let me talk while he was smilling joyfully listening to my nonsense. He always bought me chewing gum. As a kid I pronounced "Adams" (eng: chewing gum) as "Alamsh". He could not stop laughing when gave me one. When he passed away, it was the saddest memory of my childhood, even up to now it's like the darkest day of my life. He was not only like an angel to me, but also people remember him with good memories, they usually smile when sharing a memory of him. War is the choice between the worst and total annihilation. He deserved life as he appreciated every aspect of it. Not sure there is another world, but he is always in my heart as a very kind uncle.

Both my parents are from Iran, and have told their stories - my dad was a 25 year old, and was sent to the frontline telling stories of how it was right on the battlefield, seeing his friends die right beside him. My mother being 15 years old, told about how she suddenly heard the sirens go off in the city, and you had to turn all the lights off so the airplanes couldn’t hit the civilians from above … My dad got shot in the arm in the middle of the night (don’t remember which date) when he and 4 others was sent out to spy out on Iraqi territory - foolishly but incredibly brave he then walked 8 miles all by himself back to their main checkpoint the same night My mom went on picnic one time with the family, and when they returned home their house was bombed to pieces by the scud missiles… I feel incredibly lucky to be alive

Around 1998, when I was about 10 years old, I went to a friend's house. Their house gate was open. Very strange in Iran. The lock was broken. I told him: Why don't you change the lock? He said: My mother says your father doesn't have the key. He might come home and if we're not home, he leaves and might not come back. His father was lost in the war, 10 years before that. His mother went crazy. The look on her eyes, staring at the door most of the times. still haunts me to this day.

Geneva conventions on civilized warfare are largely about the treatment of wounded, non-combatants and prisoners of war. The older Hague conventions are about the use of inhumane munitions and has been much amended since its creation. It is entirely possible that one or both nations had not ratified amendments covering chemical weapons at the time of the conflict. the US forces in Vietnam had been using irritants like CN and CS (tear gas) to clear underground bunkers until they were reminded that this was technically illegal. Tear gas is a chemical agent. Lethality is not the concern the type of weapon is. Defoliants like agent orange didn't count because they were not intended to harm or be used directly against humans.

My family emigrated from Iran to the US in 2000 (when I was 3). To this day, I’m frozen in total shock when my dad jovially mentions what it was like living in Khuzestan during the start of this war, talking about the air raid sirens, missiles overhead, skyscrapers having all their windows blown out - with a hearty chuckle and reminiscing smile on his face. I will never really know the nightmare they endured

@k 4 where in Khuzestan? My dads family is from Ahvaz (my mom’s is from Esfahan where I was born) but my dad luckily wasn’t even on the frontlines since he was in high school and college during the war, so he got a technical job instead of infantry or something. I cant even imagine his trauma if he didn’t, I might not even be here typing this lol

Two of my uncles died in the war and all of my male family members fought in the war. My dad was only 15. He said people wanted to save their country from being wiped from history. This war has become a vital part of Iranian identity. I used to find all the pictures of the martyrs awfully tactless and garishly patriotic as a teenager, and would scoff, saying to my dad how unimpressed I was by it. He was always incredibly patient and explained my family's history to me, and how he even fought in the war. The only way people could swallow the mass death of young men that occurred was to believe that they were martyrs and went to heaven for protecting their country. Everyone's family died, there's not one Iranian person who isn't immediately connected to a death in the war

@@Oderus.Urungus right now Iran is in a state of flux. Young people are very sick and tired of the Muslim fundementalist government and don't want to live in a country with Islamic laws anymore (no mandatory hijabs, legally drink alcohol, able to openly criticise the government etc etc). There's around a 30/70 divide, where 70% of the population is sick and tired of the government, but 30%, mostly the older generations who fought in the war or are old enough to personally remember the Islamic revolution, still agree with the government and want there to be Islamic law in the country as they are all still quite religious. The rest of the population is largely either non religious or Muslim but not orthodox. There is still mandatory 2 years enlistment required for all men between the ages of I think 18-35 in the army, kinda like South Korea or Israel, so that's the military situation right now. But again, majority of these conscripts hate the government and try to sneak out of it. Overall there is isn't really a sense of patriotism right now. Iranians are a very proud people and we are very proud of our history and ancient roots, but currently dissatisfied with the government. For example I don't find my dad having to fight in a war honourable or brave, I hate the government for making him fight as a child. He has dark memories of those times and I wish he never had to go through that. He still believes he did the right thing but he's an incredibly strong man so he feels differently from me. Thank you for finding interest in my country and my story. People typically don't like to know much about Iran

No mention of America shooting down an Iranian passenger plane: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655 Leaving out America in this context is the historical equivalent of not mentioning the CIA/Americans in a telling of the Nicaraguan Contra Wars: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicaraguan_Revolution Just really, really poor storytelling.
