The micro 380s are probably best for pocket carry, but if im going to trust my life with it, i want something with a little more substance. The glock 42 seems like the best compromise between concealment and stopping power

Glock made the right choice here. Everyone bitching about about it being a 380 and not 9 is just ignorant to physics . 380 is a much better fit for a gun of that size, meaning better control and follow up shot accuracy regardless of your experience. And don't tell me .380 hollow points would tickle its an asinine argument. Is it a .45? No. Thats not the intended purpose. Carry a 21 or 36 if you're worried about being mugged by a buffalo.
@usnate19 жыл бұрын
You're correct that the .380 ''doesn't tickle''. However, the fact remains that for defensive purposes; if you shoot someone you want the bullet to do what it was intended to do, and that is to incapacitate/kill. The 9mm vs. .380 there is a huge gap in performance that fairs toward the 9mm. The big one here...9mm is easier to find, and waaayyyy cheaper than .380. For many the cost factor is deciding factor. Edit: He also made a valid point on the size of the 42...the .380 cartridge has the distinct advantage in that the guns that it can be chambered in can be extremely small in size. Competitors have also come out with much smaller ''pocket guns'' in the .380...WITH the same round capacity.
@BigBlake0089 жыл бұрын
No compliance 9mm guns can actually be made just as small, except perhaps barrel length because 9mm has a longer cartridge. The diameter of the two rounds is identical, so you can certainly make a 9mm gun just as thin as a .380. Now that Glock has released the 9mm 43, many people are complaining that they didn't make it the same size as the 43 when they definitely could have, specially since they kept the round count the same. In making it bigger you would think they would at least add a round.
@TRIIGGAVELLI9 жыл бұрын
Blake Ivey If a 9 and .380 are the size they're very similar terminal ballistics wise due to the lower velocity the 9 would inevitably have due to the shorter barrel.
@BigBlake0089 жыл бұрын
UnaSolida Not if you apply the same logic/theory to the .380. If you shoot a 9mm (115 grains) and a .380 (also 115 grains) out of a gun with a 5" barrel then turn around and shoot them both out of one with a 3.5" barrel, they are both going to lose velocity. Both projectiles are the same diameter and weight, so you can't say the 9mm will slow down more due to weight or wind drag. If anything it may have a greater affect on the .380 due to the extra powder in a 9mm round.
@TRIIGGAVELLI9 жыл бұрын
Blake Ivey I just don't think its a big enough difference, people make way too big a deal for what it is. A small deep concealability self defense "pocket pistol" so to speak. Your brain or viral organs aren't going to know the difference within 7 yards. Thats all I was trying to say with my initial comment.

I recently purchased a Glock 42. I originally intended to go with the Bersa .380 for conceal carry about a year ago. I did all my research and thought that it would be best for me (a woman new to shooting), but being new to the market, I allowed some idiot to intimidate me into buying the Sccy 9mm (I know, please don't get started, I HATE that gun). In the mean time I purchased a Glock 17 and fell in LOVE, HARD! So when Glock came out with a .380, I had to have it. I did the necessary research and found that in comparison to all of the guns in this video it was the best fit for me and I wasn't wrong!! I love this little thing. It's incredibly accurate, great conceal carry, awesome one-hand fire, the recoil is ridiculously minimal, fits in my pocket and it's Glock dependable. I will tell you that from the initial release of this gun, they did have to do a remake where they had to adjust a few things, so if you purchase one, make sure the serial number has a -1(dash one) after it. So, the serial number on the inside will read xxxxxx-1. Good luck.

Hellcat pro or 365 XL (i have 365 xl) are the best compact (best bang for your buck) i personally believe g42 is the best pocket size carry gun though. I personally believe the standard hellcat and 365 size guns are too small to be accurate but not small enough to carry anywhere and everywhere without a specific belt and homster to compliment. (Just my opinion)

After watching this vid and numerous others it still baffles me how many people miss the point of this glock. Underpowered, too big for .380 and should be a 9. Do you detractors shoot at all? Seriously do you? Have you owned micro 9's or .380's? Do you consider 7 rounds of .380 hp or ball in an attackers face insignificant? What are your justifications for these attacks on this pistol? Ive owned and shot multiple calibers and let me say, apart from a ruger .22 pistol, this is the least recoiling pistol ive come across. Points easily and is faster back on target than any other ive shot. Ever shoot a mini 9? They are a bear w recoil and subsequent shot target acquisition. Lcp and the like? Not nearly as bad as a nine but so small that a comfortable handhold is difficult for medium to large hands. Almost too small. Then there is the 42. Plenty to grab and minimal recoil. Any trainer worth a damn will tell you that multiple rounds, accurately delivered on target, wins. The arguments of lethality and stopping power due to size have been shown to be incorrect. Modern bullet manufacturing techniques have made the large cal ( 40, 45) vs small ( 9) debate moot. Accuracy with repeatibility are all that matters. But let me ask, if soo many people agree with the detractors why is it that every store i know has waiting lists miles long for these underpowered oversized mistakes?

Really? It seems to me a .380ACP round is not much more powerful than a .22LR round. A .380 also recoils harder than a .22. .380 is also freaking expensive The .22LR is very inexpensive. I am pretty sure most size comparable .22 pistols have a higher capacity than a .380 G42. To be fair, .380 is more reliable (since it is centerfire) and has better ballistic performance than a .22 and the Glock 42 might be preferable for the ergos and other reasons (it is a Glock after all, shoutout to all my fellow Glock-tards out there yeah-yuhh boyyy). Neither .380 nor .22 are as good as trusty old 9mm para (10mm is even better or so I've heard). I personally, would not carry a .380 or a .22 for personal protection but anywayzzz --> it seems to me your argument is for Glock to make a .22 and not a .380. I think most people would rather Glock come out with a firearm that is I don't know maybe actually wanted aka in demand (a G42 in 9mm, hell even a factory Glock .22) first and not try to create some odd and too big .380 niche market (sorry, IMO, this particular firearm is an insult to limp-wristed shooters everywhere) and that may be why they trash this nearly useless (unless those same previously insulted limp-wristed shooters would like a slightly more concealable firearm that will kinda scratch a coked up/drugged up attacker before allowing them to be sodomized to death) gun. Full disclosure, I really dislike the .380 round as it has slightly more uses than that 300 blackout garbage. Sorry for rambling I am, after all, a booger eater... In fact, I apologize for this entire comment as I am most likely, completely full of ßhît. Glock 20 FTW. GGZ jk
@tuttifongul200610 жыл бұрын
pwinters27 it seems to me that you dont shoot much and like to talk more. if rimfire was reliable folks would carry them for self defense. they are not. ever shoot the 42? bout as much recoil as my smith 22A or my ruger 22/45. thats why its a huge improvement over the other. 380's on the market. so defensive rounds are purchased by you in regards to price? definitely a new way of thinking. ill stick to what is reliable, regardless of price. and which "size comparable " self defense pistols are you referring to? derringer maybe? (2 rounds) ahh the 9 logic. ever fire a sub 9? i have and dont want to anymore. ridiculously high recoil for such a small cartridge. (btw i own a 17&19.) hence the pistol is in. 380 for controllable follow up shots. id prefer 7 rounds down range on target then 1 and 4 wild. maybe your standards differ. maybe you havent read my comment above.... stores cannot keep them in stock anywhere by me and only where they are being price gouged ie 700+. you think. 380 is a niche market? wow, you really havent paid attention have you? id say, without actually researching the numbers, that the .380 is in the top three if not THE most carried caliber for self defense. as i stated before, if you think that 7 rounds in an attackers face isnt going to do anything, feel free to carry a .50 cal wherever you go because you need to shoot more and be an internet commando less.

The weird thing is I actually like the size of the G42 I shoot it much better than the LCP2. Even though I have LCP2 I like the G42 in the DeSantis holster it came with, it fills my pocket better and it keeps the pistol from canting inside my pocket like the LCP2 does sometimes and I get a better and quicker draw on the G42. And it’s also more reliable now with all the improvements they did to the pistol and with the G3 mags. 👍🏻

I just shot a Glock 42 yesterday. I nearly put all 20 rounds through the same hole. It is close in size to my CM9 so I have no need for one. For pocket carry, the Kahr CW380 is the best micro I have shot so far. It is sub 5 inches, accurate, and lightest felt recoil in all the micro's. With all that being said, I still might pick up a 42 anyway. I loved shooting it that much.

I was seriously considering the glock 42 no matter how impractical it is when compared to other firearms in size & caliber. But i cannot get past the price gauging. One retailer wanted $613 for his another wanted $534 for theirs. They both never failed to mention "on gunbroker I can get at least $700 for it" who gives a shit! If you spend more than 399 MSRP for this model you're insane & believe it or not some people will buy it still..don't get caught up in all the hype!

Really excellent video for comparisons. Just bought the G42 last night, will be headed out to range with it shortly. (yay! can't wait!). Had planned on a Ruger LCP 380, but HATED the very difficult (for me) trigger! I have a Beretta Nano I really like, but it is hard for me to carry it concealed. Partly because of the size, but more the weight (though the weight and slightly top-heavy balance does help keep it less snappy than many other small 9s). I don't like to wear big gun belts, so weight is an issue, definitely. I do think it's often difficult for ladies to carry heavy guns as our clothing is usually very different then you guys, who can get away with pretty much everything! :). I really want to shoot an M&P Shield now, after watching this, sounds like an awesome gun... I would sure love to see Glock make a 9mm that is as small and light as the 42 but not too snappy... suppose that's improbable... sigh. I think I will keep the Nano mostly for home defense with occasional carry, and the G42 for daily carry - definitely more comfortable and no printing issues. Maybe 380 is a little smaller than I'd like to shoot, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to take a well-aimed hit from a good 380 hollow-pt! Your videos are always so informative and helpful! Thank you!

The main argument for the G42 is, 1) it's a Glock, 2) the barrel is a half inch longer than in the micro 380s, 3) it weighs 5+ ounces LESS than the brand name 9mm sub-compacts.

Exactly. I have dozens of hand guns but I carry my g42 more than any other. Lighter, fits my hand, good night sites, decent trigger, points to the same angle as all my other Glocks, I shoot it well out to 50 yards, I carry 99 grain HST at 950 fps and it is small enough to never be left at home or in my truck when I might need it. My 3 herniated discs prevent me from carrying anything even slightly heavier. The G42 works for me.

i can see the benefit of the glock concept. A simple gun that always works. And the different models that are for a wide variety of purposes. But the single stack glocks i think are just stupid. It kind of defeats the purpose of being a glock. Glocks across the board are high capacity and that has always been part of their marketing incentive, and to me the idea of a single stack glock in anything besides MAYBE 9mm is worthless. If i want a single stack full size 45 i'll get a 1911 and as you showed there are tons of cheaper, more ideal 380s out there that carry more than six. If i was gonna carry 6 shots for a compact gun, it would be a snub nose 357 magnum like the s&w 386 nightguard which actually holds 7 but you get the idea. So basically what i'm saying is the 36 and the 42 seem kind of pointless. All the bad of a glock with none of the good. Thats just my opinion. :P

I agree. I know they do it to keep it thin but they could still do a narrow double stack (only partially stagger them) & get 3 or 4 more rounds without adding much, if any width. Those extra 3 or 4 would be huge. As they are now I would buy a PPK if I wanted a .380.

Zach Worthington I had a PPK back before the sub compact 9s came out. I loved that thing. It was fun & practical to shoot and easy to carry. That's my gripe with the sub-compact 9s. They are easy to carry but they aren't fun to shoot. I am a female so that's kind of a hand strength thing. I have a G 26 & can shoot it fine but without being able to get a full grip on it, it doesn't feel good. I have the extended mag & grip extension but it pinches. lol Again, I can shoot it fine but I don't shoot it just for fun. Handgun wise I end up just taking my 226 & 92FS when I go shooting for pleasure. If I ever need to defend myself I would rather have something I shoot regularly for fun too. Just a higher level of familiarity. I wan't something that's both fun to shoot & easy to carry. I am thinking about the mid sized 9mm Glock & I want to look at the new Remington 9mm too. That new Remington 9mm looks almost like a PPK in 9mm but the Glock holds lots more rounds.

Glock was very smart by issuing the .380, letting everyone buy one then issuing the model 43 9mm. Knowing that most of the 42 owners would buy the 43. It worked on me and wouldn't have the other way around.

The 42 is a lot smaller than the Shield. Isn't it obvious? First of all, you really can't complain glock retained the size of the trigger guard, coz even though the frame and slide will be smaller and shorter, the average human finger will be the same in size, hence, same size trigger guard for sub-compacts. The argument isn't the same for the grip because we can hold the pistol without the pinky anyway.

I bought the db9 when I found out the g42 was a 9mm. The finish isn't as nice but they fixed all the reliability issues. At first I didn't like my db9 but after 1500 rounds I only ever had maybe 4 or 5 ftf from limp wristing. And I only paid 325 bucks! Highly recommended. Great vid IV keep em coming!

I have been mulling over a Glock 42. I was wondering how it carries in the pocket compared to a Kahr PM9? I had a pm 9 and I found it to be a bit large for pocket carry. It was doable, but thinner and lighter would have worked better. On the flip side I also had a Kel tec P3AT and found it to be too hard to draw due to its small size. My question is... Is the Glock 42 the happy medium? I will try one out for myself, when I can find one.
@22BStan10 жыл бұрын
i love me some glocks but the 42 is pointless unless you simply have money to blow and for the record the kahr cm9 is under $400

Excellent comparison. I totally agree that the single stack polymer frame concealed carry hand gun market is probably one of the hottest markets right now. Just like a lot of other people I too am bummed that the Glock 42 is currently only chambered in .380. Even though in a lot of shooters opinions it was a big mistake, it may have actually been a good business decision on the part of Glock. If you look at the statistics over the past few years about first time hand gun buyers or new CHL holders a huge chunk of sales went toward people buying the Ruger LCP / Keltec in .380 and a lot of the people who bought those .380 eventually moved up to a 9mm or .40 within a year or so. I think they introduced the .380 specifically to tap into the novice/ New gun buyer market. Then once they're ready to "step up" to a larger caliber they've already gotten use to the Glock product and are more likely to stay with the brand. I think its a great marketing a strategy. Much like big tobacco does/ did "get them addicted when they're young". Would have introducing the first American single stack Glock in 9mm made a lot of existing customers happy? You bet your ass but ultimately companies are in the market to make money and most of the time it's more lucrative to what's best for business versus what the Glock fan club wants to see.

Taurus PT111 Millennium G2 came out in 2013, perfect for CC. 12+1 3.2 barrel. Sold my GLOCK17 and got this. Im done with Glock hipe. Glock is not the best in the world. Whoever says that doesn't shot nothing but a Glock. There's a world of firearms out there to say Glock is the best gives some one the right to say that Honda cars are the best cars in the world.

I LOVE Springfield armory and have never liked glocks. Ive owned 6 different Springfield xd's, xd(m's), and a .45 xd-s. I just sold my xd-s for a glock 42 and would never look back. the weight alone was the selling point. the xd-s is way too heavy with 6 rounds of .45 (230 grains) and not to mention dry weight its 23 oz's vs the 42's 13 oz's. i use 62 grain bullets ( the new g2 rip rounds) and the gun has awesome ergo and recoil is almost non existent compared to the xd-s in .45. I carried my xd-s for 2 years now since the first week it came out and i am not regretting getting rid of it at all. go pick up a 42, go shoot it, go put it in your pocket. its in between a micro and a sub compact. so its a little smaller than the xd-s but larger than say a ruger lcp. i cant even feel it in my front pocket and the xd-s was almost like me lugging around some of my commander sized 1911's. most European cops even carry service pistols in .380 and new rounds and ballistics even confirm there effectiveness compared to 9 and 45 as being very effective for self defense. its not all about round size. if i can get a lighter gun, with less recoil, and shoot faster with more accuracy im all for it and that is just what it came down to. my first and probably only glock ill buy. i am still a hardcore Springfield fan to the end and currently own 9 firearms by them. there's nothing wrong with a .380 for self defense. be safe out there.

Whocares05050 I had a Glock 42 and sold it. It was stove pipe/misfeed city and in my opinion too big for a 380 so I got the much better Diamondback DB380 Gen 2 and love it. Videos/review of both on my page.
@Whocares0505010 жыл бұрын
The original glock 42 did have a few issues. ine was built a couple weeks ago and i have already fed it 500 flawless rounds including 150 hollow points for carry and all without a single issue. just like any gun, if you buy it when they first came out or somewhat still new, you are begging to be a guinee pig like i was with the xds and had similar issues. no company is immune. but buy no means is a diaondback brand better than a glock, lol

What about comparing the G42 against an LC380. No one has publicly compared those two. And yes, the trigger guard on the G42 makes it very bulky especially paired with a Crimson trace laser. On the Lc380, the crimson trace laser, due to the lc380 slim trigger guard, it just works.

So since the 42 has a larger frame for a .380 will they eventually release the 9mm version similar to the g19/23 and g17/22 where its all the same dimensions but different calibers?

The G42 was a complete disaster, is way too big for a 6 round .380 gun. There are smaller guns that are either .380 or 9mm and have the same round capacity as the G42 or more.... Would never buy a G42....

I would shoot the glock 42 all day it is a great shooting 380 you obviously never shot one. Glock was not trying to be the smallest gun they wanted a comfortable concealment with great performance which they succeeded PS. There are some great 380 rounds that will put a mule on its ass.

It would be great to hear your opinion on its performance. this gun is a lot of fun to shoot. I get it is small I have a g22 40 cal but I do not enjoy carrying it around.
@BigBlake0089 жыл бұрын
Duvall my issue isn't the size, my issue is the fact they made it the size they made it, but limited it to 6 rounds when there is plenty of room for another round or two. I have the same complaint now that they have the 43. I would have been happy if they made the 43 the same size as the 42 and kept it at 6 rounds (which they could have done). Instead, they made it slightly bigger, yet still limited it to six rounds.

Its amazing that people keep forgetting is its not just size,its weight,recoil,muzzle climb,comfortability shooting ECT.People want 9mm similar stopping power without the hard kick of a comfortable to carry 9mm.I carry magtech 1,650 fps 56 grain hollow points giving 345 ft pnds at the muzzle yet has honestly very noticeably less recoil,flash,follow up shots are much quicker and you still have 9mm HP ft pnds while saving 5 ounces.

I enjoyed the video, as always, Eric. That said, I do wish you had addressed the malfunction issues being widely reported with this model. Even though my hands are too big for me to consider purchasing this one (my EDC is a 21) I have friends and family for whom this is a current purchase consideration. I keep hearing and seeing FTE malfunctions and since Glock (im)perfection would certainly be a deal breaker in my estimation for a back up firearm, I'd appreciate hearing of this from a straight shooter like you.

I love my 42. It's my EDC. Carry it with Underwood Xtreme Defender 65grn +P loads which are very accurate and feed very reliably in this gun. I also carry mine with +2 mag extension KITS (includes springs unlike with some mag add ons...bad idea) from Ghost Inc. So, 8+1 of a potent .380 round. I shoot it regularly enough with FMJ as well as my carry load and it's an accurate, reliable, and very concealable weapon. Essentially, in my opinion, a 9mm diameter bullet that will do what I want it to "if" ever needed. From a first hand, real world user and carrier.
