Spent years of weekends down at this Fiesta Key Resort when it was a KOA! It was well kept back then. Staff was like extended family. In season, you can watch the Manatees swimming & rolling up in the channel there. Had to help tie-up & rescue a few boats in the channel there by the docks, during a few storms too! Fiesta Key was the primo Park of the two KOAs at the time. The other was Sugar Loaf! Thanks for bringing back the memories! ~ Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, you have to have a license for the lobster catch!

The eel was a Green Moray. They look fierce but are pretty docile. I lived in Key West for a couple of years in the '60s and used to dive most every Weekend. Green Morays are common and get used to humans to the point where you can handle them and they love the contact.

Question? Were you down there during the recent tropical storm that went thru? How did that go for you if you were? Thanks for the off-season review of your experiences down there. I've always thought of Fla in the early summer as too hot, but I suppose being further south in the keys you get an almost constant breeze.
@IreneIronTravels2 жыл бұрын
We had just missed that storm by less than a week! I cut out some of our ramble in this video when we talked about just missing that and also talking about the temps there. It was 85 as a high and 75 as a low, so very consistent. You're right, that ocean breeze and views just make the temps better! Some days were very humid and others you could feel the humidity was a lot less. AC was a must for sure!

You definitely lucked out with a great spot! I have to imagine folks staying in the middle gravel area are retired or on vacation, and spending the whole day near the water. Thousand Trails question. How challenging is it to find open reservations for a couple of weeks at a time? I'm definitely considering getting a Western regional membership next winter but wondering what the risk is of spending the money on a membership, and not finding openings. Thanks!
@Regorybles Жыл бұрын
Yah definitely a concern for me as well. Their TT stay was off season…I get the impression that in-season bookings in the Keys require both highest tier TT membership plus a lot of luck, and the extreme flexibility in your schedule. Wondering if the entire southeast region is oversubscribed at this point…
@IreneIronTravels Жыл бұрын
Sorry Dani, we missed this question from a ago! It can be difficult to find blocks of time, especially in Florida during the winter. But with flexibility and consistency, we have almost always got what we were looking for. In the winter it’s best to plan months in advance. 😊

We have a platinum resell TT membership too. You didn't mention how many days in advance that you had to reserve the site, and how many times you had to try. I'm told it's impossible to get a reservation at Fiesta Key with only 60 day trails advanced reservation, which is the limit with the trails edition option. The off season is unacceptably hot and humid, which appears to be the only chance of getting a TT reservation with platinum membership with trails option. True?
@IreneIronTravels2 жыл бұрын
I think it took about 2 months of trying every single day to book! It is getting harder and harder for sure. It becomes easier after April I believe ( when we booked in 2019), but this one I couldn't get until mid may! We do have a 90 day booking window for TT parks and a 60 day booking window for the Encore & trails collection parks.

@IreneIronTravels2 жыл бұрын
We have 1200 watts of solar for our 810 amps of lithium. It can produce roughly 3k to 6k power depending on time of year, so that’s roughly 250 to 500 ah charging into the batteries. We can run one AC for 5 to 10 hours depending on cycling. Charging your big bank back up does take time! With 2000 watts of solar on a peak summer day you should be able to charge about 800 ah if you don’t use any power that day!

@campingalan2 жыл бұрын
@@IreneIronTravels Hi there, from Austin TX!! Heather and I had our 30th Anniversary trip on the 33rd year to the Mediterranean cancelled, yet again. So, we shifted focus and headed down to Austin for a week of shenanigans. Unfortunately, Remy is paying the price by being in pet prison back in Ouray. But, I will definitely tell him hello this weekend when we get back. Remy probably doesn't recognize that he is better off at the kennel. It is staying between 100-105 here for our whole stay and is only in the 70s in Ouray. Oh wow....that is awesome about the Blue Mesa property coming under Thousand Trails! I guess I am not surprised. The Blue Mesa Reservoir level is WAY down (it was used to discharge more water for Lake Powel last summer and it did not get replaced this spring from the snow melt off :-( That would be awesome if you return to the area! Maybe we can get some joint camping in, or at least a visit in. If you come to Gunnison, I HIGHLY recommend a visit to Crested Butte and the greater area. It is really a cool mountain ski town; even in the summer. It has some nice boondocking areas for your trailer, and even more foe your roof top tent. Anyways, the Blue Mesa area was a huge fishing area, so the campground was mostly fishermen staying in the area. With the lake very low, fishing is not bringing the fishing traffic in. So, TT will be great. Safe travels!!

@IreneIronTravels2 жыл бұрын
We have heard that from other Dog owners as well! Thankfully Louie grew up on desert, gravel, grass, leaves, sand, rocks etc and doesn’t have that problem. But he definitely prefers taller thick grass as his favorite. I think the fake grass has a good drainage system and it seemed to be pretty good the 3 weeks we used it. Rain seemed to clean it or maybe staff used a hose. But we would definitely prefer real grass. But most dog parks we run into are dirt and sand, which makes it messy….

@David-pk6bn2 жыл бұрын
So when you factor in the up front cost with the $20 what is your effective nightly rate?
@IreneIronTravels2 жыл бұрын
It kinda depends on how you look at it. Most parks within the system don’t have a nightly fee, only a handful like the ones in the keys. Let’s say we spend 100 nights in the thousand trails parks. The first year we paid $2700 for the membership, 550$ for the yearly fees and $300 for the trails collection addon. That’s on average about $35 per night. Plus $20 per night if your in special parks. We did 4 nights in the keys…. So you could say it cost us $35 plus $20, so $55 per night. Every year after that we only have the annual fee of $550 plus the trails collection add on for $330. Then the nightly fee drops to around 9 bucks….. plus the 20$. We might spend 150 nights a year in the system and then it gets even cheaper. Around 5$ per night is the cheapest I think…. Hope that helps.
