What's better, Denso Iridium Tough spark plugs or Iridium Power spark plugs? In this video I explain the difference between the Denso Tough and Power spark plugs and which one I chose for my car. Let me know what you would choose and why?
There are a number of different makes and types of spark plugs on the market with the well know manufactures being NGK, Bosch, Denso and Champion. All offer a great range of different performance plugs from low cost, long-life and high performance.
The typical materials used for spark plugs are Nickle, Platinum and Iridium. Between the three Nickle offers a low cost but sacrifices long life. Platinum offers a longer life but are more expensive and iridium offers high performance and longer life.
Iridium Tough are for long distance and heavy-use drivers, for drivers that care
about mileage. By greatly minimising electrode wear, DENSO improved mileage and extended the plug’s useful life. Longevity provides you with peace of mind and safety when using Iridium Tough. If you use your car on a daily basis, you may be concerned about fuel consumption, Iridium Tough is one solution. Iridium Tough are rated to 100,000Km/62000miles
Iridium Power plugs are for the performance enthusiasts. Denso state these offer an increase in acceleration and up to 1.4% increase in hp over standard plugs, with also 5% increase in fuel efficiency. The downside to these is their lifespan. Iridium Power plugs are rated between 15,000 - 20,000km / 9300 - 12500miles . This makes these plugs best suited to vehicles which aren't used on a daily basis, unless you're happy to change your plugs every 10,000 miles
The plugs compared here are the VKH22 iridium tough and the IKH22 iridium power

I’ve ran iridium power for 60000 miles completely fine to run them till failure - Hemi 5.7 even drove from Il to Ca on them when they had over 40000.

Anyone else measure the gap on an Iridium Power only to find it narrower than specced? I bought a few IKH20 plugs that were supposed to be gapped to 1.1mm, but proved to be 1.0mm using a standard wire gapping tool. So I did what was sensible and re-gapped them. It only occured to me much later that the U-groove probably accounts for the missing 0.1mm.

could you compare TT vs tough vs power vs Iridium?
@SerenoOunce
@SerenoOunce Жыл бұрын
Short answer is TT plugs are designed for waste spark systems, 1 coil / 2 cyl where plug wear is essentially double. Won't hurt in a standard 1:1 coil/plug setup but little benefit either.

From memory the iridium twin tip is better if you are after fuel economy and want something that will last. All the data is on the Denso website am.denso.com/plug-global/

@@furqankhan3930 only have experience with this on my 140cc mower. Gapped the IK16 plug to spec and tried it out. My mower since new would bog or stall out in tall grass especially if I used self propel. Also, I usually bag my grass but I couldn't believe how well it managed on tall grass and weeds. It never bogged down to die at all! And this is with a dull blade! I use a full tank for tall grass but it got it done on a 1/3 tank of gas. I'm sold on these spark plugs, gonna buy more!

@3:20 you mention you likely won’t notice much of a difference performance wise in actual driving conditions since the performance improvement of the Power plug offers is a relatively small advantage. With that said, why would someone not go with the longer lasting Tough plug if you gain no perceivable performance gain with the Power plug? If Power was a noticeable gain I understand the argument but you made it sound negligible in the video. Just looking for clarification. Thanks!

@GarageTechAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, really depends on the application. From the data Denso supply the gains are marginal, I haven’t managed to run a dyno test to confirm if there is any noticeable power increase in the power plugs over the tough. The type of car you’re using them on will be the biggest variable. If you’re running a highly tuned car with lots of boots or high compression this will affect the quality of the spark, so in that instance the power plug may offer more gains. Also the condition/setup of the ignition system. Older cars with HT leads and distributors may notice a more significant gain as generally they have a weaker ignition system. So you might go for the power if it meets your engine build requirements. On an average car doing more than 10k miles a year, the tough is a no brainer really with the extended life span. I’m doing less that 2000 miles a year so the power plugs are a more sensible option as I’ll be changing them due to age rather than mileage anyway. Hope that helps

10,000 miles on a HEMI with 16 spark plugs is not worth the cheap plugs because the labor involved is far more expensive.

@@furqan9499 to be honest, unless you are running a high performance engine with high octane fuel etc. I don’t think you will see a huge amount of difference between them all. The tough will last longer so if you’re doing high mileage 15-20k miles a year I’d go with that, if lower, like less than 10k I’d go with the power plugs

@GarageTechAutomotive 6 ай бұрын
@@furqan9499 I’d go with iridium twin tip but most importantly, you will need to get the carburetor tuned afterwards. There’s no way the carburetor will know what plugs have been fitted. The garage will need to measure the exhaust gases with a gas analyser to check the HC (hydrocarbons). This is basically unburnt fuel. A good garage will know what to do.
