Good video! I used to grow them commercially (and hybridize them). Commercial growers wait til the end of summer or beginning of fall to dig up and separate rhizomes. It allows them to grow bigger before the dormant season, thus giving them a better chance at blooming the next spring. Thanks again, they really are easy to grow with lots of sunlight. Happy growing!

Love that you go over the full cycle of Iris care in a clear and simple way! For replanting after rhizome cures, is it best to do it in fall or spring? Or just as soon as sliced area dries pop it where you want it?

Very helpful video and perfect timing too. I'm a beginner with the bearded Iris but planted some I got free years ago. I have 3 large 3ft by 3ft clumps to break up and replant here in Fresno CA. Probably not until August here do to the heat. going to be 95 today. One thing I missed that I heard here was to plant the rhizome so it gets direct sunlight as it is needed for better flowering. Might have a different placement of the growth fan then. Glad I subscribed to you some months ago.

thank you for this! I have several iris in my yard... this year only one bloomed, the other 6 locations none of them bloomed and Im not sure why...I was wondering when to divide my iris, your video looks like it was made in May but Im watching it in July is it too late to divide them now or should I wait until the Fall when its a bit cooler maybe?...Devin another question I have is this: I have a yard that is tiered levels and Im not sure what the former owner filled the tiers in with but things dont grow well... I try to do everything organic and improve the soil with compost but I have to fertilize to get anything to grow because the fill soil is not good... one thing thats mystifying me is several plants that should be tall are growing stunted like Yarrow is 2-4inches instead of feet, echinacea is less than a foot tall and spindly, windflower only a few inches, a dahlia about 4 inches, some giant zinnia seeds are growing very short and weak..... its like they grow dwarfed. I put some fertilizer on some other plants (joe pye weed, nepeta and bergamot) and that helped them but these others I mention are still stunted. Im just a beginner so dont know alot about what could be causing this. I wish you were in the Pacific northwest so you could come over and give us a consult!
@plantvibrations4 ай бұрын
Perhaps your other iris aren’t getting enough sun? You can definitely divide now. Are you irrigating the plants on the tier? That could be stunting their growth
@KniDonovan3 ай бұрын
long time Iris grower here. My Iris definitely won't bloom if the rhizomes to not get enough sunlight for the season or too much rain. They right want to check if the roots are covered by mulch or haven't had direct sunlight. Too much fertilizer will on many plants too close to bloom time produce more foliage than blossoms. My suggestion is to research the plants and their needs- ie preferred water, Sun and soil conditions companion planting native flowers and for your region can be really helpful as well. :) hope it goes well for you 💚
@aeastman593 ай бұрын
@@KniDonovan thank you so much! yes, I am stumped... I did one early spring lite fertilizing, and they get about full day sunlight, I water them once a week or twice if really hot (over 90) ... maybe the rhisome is too deep I can see it on top of the soil but maybe I should take them all out and re plant them even higher so more rhisome is showing, I will try that I think

@@aeastman59 It sounds like you are doing great! ( green thumb) Some years seem persnickety. I honestly did not have even ONE bloom this year ( cry! ) They are the jewel of my garden. I've had lesser or more bloom years before especially after dividing them up. I've wondered especially with my Irises-if sometimes I can dote on my plants a little TOO much and they do fine on their own. ☺️

Thank you so much, Devin! I've been learning so much from your videos! I will definitely use your advice on my irises. Can you please, talk about other plants in this flower bed? It looks so full, natural and lush! I love the look of a completely green flower bed (no big mulched spaces in between) but don't know how to achieve it without overcrowding and suffocating neighboring plants. Thank you again for the wonderful channel.

I always heard you should wait until July or August to divide irises. I divided several clumps last year and they all bloomed, but 2 which I can’t figure out because the foliage was extremely healthy.
@plantvibrations5 ай бұрын
Hmm I’ve never heard that before. Any rationale why?

I have a few Immortality Reblooming Bearded Irises, can I divide them now or should I wait until fall? They are over grown and have a circle in the middile of the patch.
@jaaustin5005 ай бұрын
Depends if you want them to rebloom this year or not as usually they don’t right after division. Irises are so hardy you can divide them literally any time but you won’t necessarily get blooms that same year. I am in zone 5. 😄👍

Saw a good hint about dividing iris. After digging them up, look for where the green fans are growing. Anything that does not have growth coming out if it is useless. That’s the part he threw away. Had no green growth.

I’ve given up on irises. They are not easy to grow. I’ve spent hundred of dollars purchasing them. I’ve done everything to help them grow. Planting them at the right depth and fertilizing them. I get beautiful foliage but very few blooms year after year. For many years. I give up. They’re not worth spending time on them. I’m digging them up from my garden and giving them away. I want them out of my garden.
