Word of advice the "A string" goes up to D and not down to D otherwise you get this flat sound throughout the song when on the 5th fret. Try it out and you will hear what I mean.

I recently upgraded to a new guitar and dedicated my starter to playing Iris. Threw 2 low e, 2 d, and 2 high e strings on and it alleviates the pain of the tuning. I also think it sounds more authentic since these strings seem more comfortable in this tuning.

I learnt this song a while ago now. It's awesome. I can't stress enough about changing strings to heavier gage ones. If you use light strings the big e string is too slack and the slightest touch just sends it buzzing. I have the world's cheapest guitar off eBay which is strung and tuned just for this. Also, check out goo goo dolls acoustic season 2 -- iris on KZbin. John Rzeznik plays this on his own in this tuning and is a great way to learn it as you see most of his fretting hand. The keen eyed amongst us will see he hasn't got a high e string on it lol

DUDE! Fantastic video. Thanks for doing this. It's an unusual count for an unusual tuning. All around unusual which sounds amazing. Can't wait to start exploring this one. So after exploring this tonight (and I have long way to go) I notice my pinky is covering the three bottom strings on the 12th fret just enough to get some harmonics without really trying and as I think about it, i seem to recall hearing harmonic in the original - does that seem right?

Hey stranger! You could also tune your guitar in Open D so it probably wouldn't be a problem as you lower the string's tension and also adds a beautiful atmosphere to the song

I found this recommendation for this tuning. If you’re going to have a dedicated guitar for this tuning try this recommendation. Low to high , low E string replaced with a 0.50 gauge bass string , A string is replaced with a 0.46 gauge low E string , D string stays the same , G string is replaced with a 0.26 gauge D string , B string is replaced with a .10 gauge E string and High E string stays the same
