Bought this at launch and I wasn't disappointed. I was surprised by the lack of prop torque, untill I found out the PC-21 has its prop angled slightly to the right to counter this. IRIS included this in the model. I think that great attention to detail is representative of the whole aircraft. 100% up there with the Arrow, 310, Corsair etc in the top tier of add-ons.

Very happy to hear that you're enjoying it Roland! IRIS have definitely gone from strength to strength in MSFS thus far and whilst I wasn't expecting to get all that much enjoyment out of the PC-21 (it's just not really my cup of tea), I was proven well and truly wrong haha. These sorts of aircraft in FSX etc, tended to suffer from all of the default turboprop issues and therefore weren't much fun to fly, but here the IRIS PC-21 was every bit as enjoyable as the MB339, Hawk etc. Happy flying and all the best! : )

All propeller driven aircraft are designed with the thrust line offset to counter torque effects, but it is always a compromise due the different effects at different power settings and different phases of flight. What the PC-21 does have is an automatic yaw compensation system (trim aid device), as well as the FADEC limiting power below 80 knots. From people I've spoken to, you can barely tell the difference between the PC-21 and a jet, and this is by design.

Great demo & review. Looks a cracking plane. I had been waiting for the JustFlight Hawk T-1 to be released for the xbox but was starting to wonder whether it would ever appear. From your review, the PC-21 looks like it's just as much fun - plus I prefer props anyway. Bought it straight away. Thanks for all your hard work.

Thanks very much A Sill, a pleasure as always! I think the Hawk will still make an appearance on the console, but for sure it has been a long wait haha. The PC-21 is a brilliant stop-gap solution at the very least and certainly delivers every bit as much on the fun factor; + it's just as shiny and red as the Hawk : P If props are your thing, then the PC-21 certainly ticks a lot of boxes. I hope you're enjoying the addon! Happy flying and all the best : )

South Korea plans to develop a new combat trainer to replace the KT-1 trainer. It will probably be developed as a top-of-the-line trainer for the existing super turcano or pilatus PC-21. The analog instrument panel will be changed to the digital one seen in fighter jets.

Great review as always, thank you very much! I bought the PC-21 yesterday and after the first two flights absolutely agree with your review. Looking forward to the announced rewrite of the custom PC-21 HUD, until then the F-18 HUD is okay. Also hope for some improvements regarding the FMS and especially the nav display. Otherwise the aircraft flies very, very nicely and looks beautiful, especially the MFDs. Absolutely worth the money!

Ha ha! Had hoped you would review this one...and here it is! Very fair review, as always, and I'm glad you took the time to explain things like the graphics performance vs resolution being an intentional decision by IRIS. This is actually my favorite type of aircraft in (any) sim: modern(ish) instruments under a bubble canopy and great performance to have fun with. I'm glad you think the value for money is there, and comparing it to the direct competitors like India Foxt Echo & MilViz, I also think it's priced appropriately. Normally I wait for a sale, but this one is too close to my personal sweet spot and the price is right, so I'm off to buy it!

Excellent review video once more, ITBS. And yes, YPEA (on the included map) is RAAF Pearce. Home to an airforce flight training squadron and just up the road from my house. Hi Mukkuimama, Thanks very much for the request and indeed the kind words! I would love to cover X-Plane content more than I do, but 1) X-Plane videos don't tend to do very well on the channel (as a result of the way KZbin's algorithm works) and much more importantly 2) I simply don't have enough to time to fully cover 2 sims haha. As Stewie kindly points out, I do have some X-Plane content on the channel; the FlyJSim 737 and Toliss A321 are featured for example, but they aren't review videos per se and being older content, it's a little more "rough around the edges" haha. I do have a couple more X-Plane videos pre-recorded and those will be uploaded in due course (another flight in the FlyJSim 737, one in the Flight Factor A320 etc) and I also plan to record a video in the FlyJSim 727 soon. Making the aircraft ready for the Xbox seems like a weak excuse for the texturing problems. Carenado and especially Sim Works Studios, for example, seem to make solid products which work on both platforms without compromise. I am not saying that it's not a good plane, overall I like it. To be honest, I am not one to worry about graphics too much as long as it is generally good. I just don't care for the excuse. Your reviews are consistently excellent. I appreciate how much care and attention you take with each of your subjects. Thank you very much!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the kind words Dillan, I’m really glad you’re enjoying the content! I completely agree with you on that one: I think devs have all too often used the Xbox as a bit of an “excuse”. We’ve seen devs claiming they haven’t accomplished XYZ, in order to make the product compatible on the console, meanwhile another dev has managed the same thing just fine. I wouldn’t pretend to know exactly what goes into making a product though and the compromises that have to be made etc. All that being said, in the case of the PC-21 specifically, I too still think it’s a good product. Higher resolution textures would have been nice, but the aircraft still looks good and is very enjoyable to fly. You’re most welcome re the videos! My pleasure and all the best to you : )

Great review. Quick question: how do you get rid of the pilot animation in the cockpit? In VR, when starting the flight, you are seated in the front cockpit with the animated pilot. You mentioned going to the MSFS load manager and selecting the option to turn pilot animations on/off. I just see the pilot weights. Do I load 0 weight to get rid of the pilot animations?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hello Richard, apologies for the slow reply (I'm just catching up on the comments now). You mean to say that you're in the front seat, with the pilot also animated in the front seat? If so, that's odd - the pilot should only be animated in the opposing seat. Are you using custom views, that can sometimes cause the issue you describe? Indeed, setting the pilot's weight to zero, will remove the visible model externally - I'm not sure whether this translates to the internal model though. Worth looking at the MFD options page also, since pilot visibility can be turned off there (again, I'm not sure whether this applies internally, or only externally). I hope that helps a little. I'm glad you enjoyed the review! Thanks for watching and all the best : )

I would say that it’s preferable eracer, but certainly not required. I use a HOTAS for all of my simming, where of course sometimes a yoke / throttle would be more appropriate. Flying a couple of nav trips, from A to B. Even with the FMC - the nav you can do is very basic. waypoint numbers does not match, but at least it will change to next wp as you pass over it. Not even close to a real nav simulation. Guess highest priority is fun messing around the airport, not navigate to next. Hope updates will fix it. I am not asking for study level, but kind of msfs Garmin GPS, level of detail and function. Another update I like to see, is the HUD brightness. There is a bright knob, but it does not work. Just shift color to dark green will be fine for me. Lucky - you do not airspeed info approach. Put the flight path cue on the threshold, and use AOA indicator for speed adjustment. IRIS seems to have done this right. Looking forward for updates - this can be a very fine aircraft in the future.

Yes, the NAV system is indeed pretty sub-par øystein. The PC-21 is unfortunately one of the many addons making use of default Asobo avionics and paying the price for it. Hopefully as Working Title continue to improve the programming of these sorts of things, it will drag up the functionality of many 3rd party addons also. If memory serves me correctly, there is also an adjustment for the HUD brightness (might be worth having another look) - I seem to recall turning down the HUD brightness quite a bit for this flight. Cheers again : )

Hi Luigi, That's a good question haha. Unfortunately, the PC-21's FMC is somewhat generic (making use of default Asobo avionics), so I suppose IRIS just assumed everyone knew what they were doing with it. The FMC is however customised just enough, that other tutorials for FMC setup won't quite apply. The PC-21 FMC seems to be a bit of a mix between and Boeing and Airbus FMC, so if you watch a couple of tutorials on how to set those up, you should be able to muddle your way through the PC-21's setup thereafter haha. Far from ideal of course. . . I hope that proves to be of some help. Cheers and all the best! : )

The product comes with a number of liveries CT, they are listed on the IRIS website (I’m afraid I can’t remember them off the top of my head); there’s no RAF livery, though there is an ETPS one. Hello Janet, apologies for the slow reply (I'm just catching up on comments now). I'm not 100% sure on that one and don't have the aircraft to hand right at this moment, but removing the pilot's weight, removes the external visual model, I would be very surprised if the same weren't true of the internal model; it's also quite possible that such an option is available via the MFD's. Sorry I can't offer anything more concrete up at the moment; I can check for you at a later date, if the functionality is a real deal-breaker? Cheers and all the best : )

Very much so Dave. Admittedly I don’t own the Deimos PC-21, but I do own a couple of their other addons and they’re very much towards the lower end of the fidelity spectrum (that’s not knocking Deimos, those sorts of addons have their place in the hobby). The IRIS PC-21 isn’t study level, but it’s a reasonably convincing rendition of the aircraft and I suspect it is significantly superior to the Deimos version in terms of graphics, systems, flight model, sounds etc. I hope that helps. Excellent video! Yep, like you, when I tried a spin, it was difficult to induce, and impossible to recover. Sound wise, when I hold the brakes, put full power, keep holding the brakes, after a few seconds, the sound seems to loop. Also, when I switch off the engine from the cockpit, then go in outside view, the sound is gone! Left of the HUD the green light is a bit turquoise. Mollis is pronounced Molice, like Police. Hi A360, I can very much see your point and without a doubt it takes a tonne of effort to produce a product of this quality! I think you (and I'm sure many others) perhaps misunderstand my critique though: Very rarely, do the issues that I point out bother me personally, the same is true of the PC-21 here. I review any product, simply trying to give an accurate representation of both the good and the bad and any negatives that I do point out, are highlighted based on what I know will bother others. The texturing for example; it doesn't bother me in the slightest and I think the aircraft looks great, but I know those that really have an eye for the smaller details, will probably pick up on the deficiencies (and indeed there are a number of comments along those lines). I try to make my reviews all about showcasing the product as best I can and then letting the viewer draw their own conclusions. I hope that clarifies my position a bit. Cheers and all the best! : )

Thanks! Enjoy your procedures. - Guess you are a instructor in a real simulator (or at least score high on tests) Tucano was a favorite in fs98 - so I had to check this out. No high hopes as default Iris aircraft in P3d was pure junk. But very positive at the price, instant buy. I am more disappointed in sound than you are. Propeller beating air is missing. Going from feather to idle fine pitch should be a more distinct roar. At takeoff power the sound should be closer to propeller, than pure jet whine. Almost as flysimware Cessna 414 at TO power (even this is a piston engine). Anyone sitting in a F-50 , DHC twin Otter, Q400, Embraer and similar commuter aircraft (with Pratt&Whitney turboprop) know what I mean. Or just search PW pt6 sound on the net. Thanks very much once again øystein! I'm not a military instructor (alas), but I did do okay at the aptitude tests, yes haha. Sorry to hear that you aren't a fan of the sounds. As I often point out in my reviews, I don't really have a very good ear for this sort of thing, so I'm often at odds with the audience, when it comes to my opinions on aircraft sounds haha. IRIS certainly have an "iffy" background, but their standards have come on a long way over the years. I enjoyed their G115 very much and I feel the PC-21 is better yet. The aircraft is far from perfect, but I think it's a thoroughly decent offering given the price. I know that IRIS are aware of some sound issues with the addon, so hopefully we'll see general improvements also. Cheers and all the best!

Hi Henry, Ah ok, fair enough. I didn't really feel the same way myself (we all have different tastes though). I thought the cockpit was modelled / textured quite nicely for the most part; not the best I've seen by any means, but decent given the price. Once again, IRIS have quite openly stated that (for better or worse) the addon has been created to meet Xbox standards, so I suspect that's why some of the visuals fall short of the standards one might reasonably expect. Cheers, all the best! : )

You’re most welcome Propfan! No, I’m certainly not fixed on MSFS. I do have some X-Content though, with a couple more X-Plane vids pre-recorded, I even have a DCS vid coming up haha. I was planning on taking more of a look at X-Plane 12, but I’m just waiting for the sim to mature a little further. Ah well thanks very much for the kind words. The textures are indeed somewhat downgraded David. As mentioned, the textures have apparently been kept purposefully lower resolution in certain areas, to make the PC-21 Xbox compatible. Hardly ideal of course and it wouldn't have been my preference, but IRIS are at least quite upfront about this fact, so people can make their purchasing decision accordingly. All the best!
@zorbakaput8537

I really don't know why you worry about software "being downgraded " for Xbox. Many PC owners have to downgrade their settings because they don't run a top shelf PC with a 3090 or 4090 in it. Same result in my book. It gives the end user a choice to have a usable and flyable sim which doesn't stutter itself to death.

You talk about choice yet really you are talking about taking it away from those that can have it. There’s no doubt been a negative effect caused by devs having to limit things for console, so it is a concern, this plane could have been better if it wasn’t for that.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Well I don’t lose sleep over it Zobra haha, but as a couple of the other comments allude to (and your own in fact), its really about having the “choice”. Setting the Xbox’s hardware as the “upper limit”, obviously hamstrings what can be done in the sim. I have nothing against the console to be clear and I’m really happy to see a whole new audience within the hobby, but ideally products should be created for the PC and then “downgraded” to the console, otherwise we aren’t getting the most out of MSFS. For sure, some products can be quite taxing on even the most stout of PC setups, but that has always been the case in flight simulation. Offering a “choice”, means giving the ability to downgrade, not setting the standards at a fixed “lower” level. I run somewhat “modest” hardware myself, so I’m familiar with having to make trade-offs, but I’d rather do that on my end than the developers. I hope that clarifies my viewpoint. All the best : )

It’s certainly not just you Chocks, though plenty are enjoying the sim on the console of course and overall I actually think the Xbox has proven to be a good thing for the sim / hobby. It is most certainly a shame to see any product downgraded for the console (ideally there should have been a separate PC version of the addon also), but luckily most of the study level jets (and the majority of decent products actually) have not seen this treatment. The console brought a tonne of new people / interest into the hobby; I don’t think MSFS would have been nearly as successful if the sim had remained PC only. Of course we don’t want to see the sim turned into a game (I certainly don’t at any rate), but neither do we want to see Microsoft dumping the franchise again - the console market has made MSFS very profitable, so hopefully we should see Microsoft continue to support the sim well into the future (with the sim relying on cloud data / servers, as soon as Microsoft withdraw support, MSFS is most likely dead). That’s my take on it anyway. There are of course upsides and downsides to the whole situation. Cheers, all the best! : )

The robbing of Peter to pay Paul (downscaling graphics on PC models to satisfy XBox players) is bad practice in my opinion. Flight simulation should be PC-based only or alternately for those who can't afford a PC rig, a separate offering for XBox users should be included ... or take XBox out of the genre. XBox isn't for serious flight sim enthusiasts - you don't have XBox hand controllers in real aircraft and therefore XBox fails to simulate this area of flying for real. If one isn't going to simulate/replicate real flight in every possible aspect then there are other things one can do to amuse oneself. PC users are being cheated to satisfy the 'others'. I won't come back to read the incoming rockets XBox users will send my way, but go ahead ... vent your spleen.
