I have a fair bit of classical training, and taught classical but not to professional standards, while I do try t keep in musical shape! The thing I noticed about your playing is a very nice musical tone..esp in your slow demos. I suppose I'm of the view that a good classical grounding (up to Grade Seven) helps in trad by expandng the range of techniques available to the player and it increases stamina for practice of difficult passages. Keep up the good work and hold your good tone!! T G

I believe this tune is also commonly called "Mary McMahon [of Ballinahinch]". I've also heard it called "Micho Russell's" (the Co. Clare whistle player did play it, calling it "Clogher Rose").

Hi Daniel, Thanks for this info - yes, the tunes names differ dependant on the place you learned them. Where are you learning the music?

Great Fiddlin! I am a fiddler too, that just happened to have an affinity to the Donegal style. I guess it must be because I am Scot-Irish. I was just curious to ask you, what are some of your favorite session tunes? - Sláinte!

Isn't this tune a Tony Macmahon? I cannot find it as a James Byrne.

Hi Orja, I'm not sure of any different names - why not download the sheet music from the website? It's free www.oaim.ie

Well, I think you are on to somthing useful here in terms of setting out idas about difficulty. True they all have their difficulties , but some more than others as you say. There are some things which the likes of S Ryan could do and others could not because they did not have the technique. Have you some classical training??

Fiddle style difficulty levels non-applicable- Donegal is all about the bow, and is heavily influenced by scottish music, while Clare has a lot of left and right-hand intricacy thrown in: More rolls, half rolls etc. Apples and pears. What about Sligo style?
